I don't have a B3 any more but I did try it out once with Reaper and it was OK, have you tried recording with none of the effect on? I think on the main setup page you can adjust the output volume, it would be worth checking that as well, if the signal is too low it could sound muffled when recorded.

I should be seeing my mate (guitarist) tonight who has a house in HK so I'll ask him for you.

You may have done this already but have you tried adjusting the hight of the pick-ups? raise the J and screw the P down so they balance a bit better. I have a set of Wizard PJ pick-ups in my passive Fretless jazz.

Worth a try

Do you have any sound clips at all? I played a fretless semi acoustic bass a while back that I think had these strings on it and it sounded absolutely lush and I have wondered about trying them on my fretless P/J bass ever since.

I like the sound of that

[/quote] It's really hard to say, I told Dave there was no rush to do the job so I was without the bass for quite a while add to that I decided to change from half rounds to round wounds at the same time which obviously make it sound brighter.

And we complain about the import duties over here As mentioned above you should be fine if the heal of the neck is the same shape. BTW Jazz bass necks fit P bodies too.

I did BEAD for a while on a J&D Jazz Bass, I used light gauge strings ( .125 B ) and hardly had to adjust the nut and truss rod, worked a treat but ultimately a 5er works better for me as I missed the G string on a couple of tunes.

Hi Ian, I don't think it's necessary but as my bass has a small headstock as well as 33" scale the through body stinging means the strings are still cut to the same length as usual, that way you get the tapered part of the B and E strings going around the tuner post, if the stings went through the bridge it would be the fat part around the tuner, which is not ideal. Does that make sense?

Update! Having lived with this bass for a while I had a change of heart on the fingerboard, after a brief spell of enjoying Maple I've gone back to liking dark woods, couple that with trying out a 33" scale bass Dave had made for himself and loving it I asked him to modify my bass, so here it is in all it's glory, it's now 33" scale length with an Ebony fingerboard, through body stringing and a bigger slot for getting at the truss rod. I think it looks a lot nicer and it plays much better, it was a good bass that's now a great bass [attachment=199454:P1010591 retlr.jpg]

Cheap secondhand necks sometimes come up for sale on here on BC, I'd keep all the basses for now until you have found a neck/body combination you really like then sell the rest of the parts.

I know what you mean, I've mostly hidden the gap with the scratchplate on the finished bass, I doubt anyone would notice it but I know it's there. Here's a pic from early on in the build when I was trying the parts out, the red arrows show where the neck touches the body stopping it moving any further towards the bridge and being a perfect fit.
