1.
A case of measuring the stock pups when I get the bass, I suppose. Had a look at these twin-coil Barts, too... http://www.musicians...bass-pickup-set Though they may be too bright for an all-maple Jazz?
I might have a set of those in the cupboard I've certainly got a set of some sort of Bart 5 string Jazz pups you can try assuming they fit your Squier.
2.
OK Dave, I've pulled the trigger on a white VM Jazz 5. Now... where can I get those 5-string Jazz humbuckers??
Great I'd keep an eye out on Basschat for some secondhand humbuckers, I picked up a set of Delano soap bars not long ago for my Jazz 5 build, they are Bart sized so can be replaced if I don't like them.
3.
External Preamp?
This is what I'd suggest as well, it will do the same job but leave your bass unmolested and you can easily sell the pre amp pedal if it's not what you were looking for tone wise.
4. I've owned a couple of Overwater's, one was a second hand Progress, the other was a custom made fretless Perception, both were very nice basses but to me they didn't really have any soul, a weird thing to say I know, nothing wrong with them I just didn't feel the love. I'd like to try one of their 5 string Jazz Basses. As stated above you probably need to try as many Luthiers work as you can to see what floats your boat.
5.
That is actually a really good idea, though I have to say that solution is a bit too logical and reasonable for this thread.
6.
Which brings us to the Fender Modern Player Jazz, which is where I came in.
True but the MP has none standard shaped pups which I think are quite wide so you'd be stuck with them, my thinking was that you could get a white VM Jazz 5 and replace the Jazz pups with say Bart or EMG sized ones then you can experiment with different makes of humbuckers
7. You can always get twin humbuckers fitted to a Jazz Bass at a later date.
8.
Very soon, I think it's the same with all half rounds.
I don't find the Status ones ( I have 'em on 3 basses) sticky from new. I might give the D'addarios another try some time soon - cheers
9. I tried D'addario's once and found them extremely sticky so moved them on, does that go away after a while?
10. I like that, as you say it's very 80's but in a good way The fretless Wal sounds great. Oh and welcome to Basschat!
11. I recently got a text from DPD saying my parcel had been successfully delivered (address in Manchester) which was kinda strange as I hadn't sent anything! it was probably a customer putting the wrong mobile number in rather then an error by DPD though.
12. Howard (Bass Doc) will make you one for a reasonable price if you send him your one to use as a template.
13.
We should start a Basschat courier company - just for Basschatters.
A kinda relay service where people list where they are travelling from and to and on what date if they are willing to act as a courier for a fellow Basschatter.
14. They once failed to deliver to me something I purchased on here, the seller had a devils own job finding out what had happened to it, in the end Hermes admitted to losing it even though it was flagged up as 'out for delivery' at one point, also they failed to turn up to collect a package from me a few years ago, no apology or explanation, add to that the fact that their service is really slow IMO it's worth paying a little extra to use a proper courier.
15. I use them on most of my basses.
16. Lakland 55-01 almost fits the bill Mark apart from I don't think they came in white
17. I know nothing about amps but I'm guessing there's reasons something like a Class D car audio system amp for a sub speaker couldn't be adapted to work as a power amp for bass guitar? they seem small, powerful and reasonably priced.
18. I have a passive 5 string bass with 2 humbuckers and rotary switches for the pickup options and it sound great, it has a variety of tones all very usable so I'm surprised the Fender doesn't sound so good as it's a similar setup.
19. What a lovely pair you have! I adore your SKB, maybe you could post some more pics of it at some point? Welcome to basschat
20.
Interesting! Although I really plan on using the zoom as a preamp/compressor/noise gate/tuner and never really use it for any effects as such. If I understand it correctly you can use it as a stomp box with the effect that you leave on the digital read out? if thats the case then perhaps thats another option.
Yes I think you can do that or you could possibly have 2 patches that are identical except one has the Octave effect as well, you can then cycle between the two setting with the foot switch. I'm no Zoom expert though as I mainly use mine as a tuner
21. There a new MXR Pre Amp pedal coming soon that I'm keen to try. http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/bass-preamp
22.
Yep, its ridicolous how cheap they are..... I've just bought myself a zoom ms60b from thomann (plus a few other bits and bobs) yesterday, wish I thought about it and just popped another one into my basket.
You might find as I did that the tracking on the Zoom is pretty darn good, the 'Pitch' setting (I think that's the one I use) works better then any other octaver I've tried.
