Interesting! Although I really plan on using the zoom as a preamp/compressor/noise gate/tuner and never really use it for any effects as such. If I understand it correctly you can use it as a stomp box with the effect that you leave on the digital read out? if thats the case then perhaps thats another option.
Yes I think you can do that or you could possibly have 2 patches that are identical except one has the Octave effect as well, you can then cycle between the two setting with the foot switch. I'm no Zoom expert though as I mainly use mine as a tuner

There a new MXR Pre Amp pedal coming soon that I'm keen to try. http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/bass-preamp
Yep, its ridicolous how cheap they are..... I've just bought myself a zoom ms60b from thomann (plus a few other bits and bobs) yesterday, wish I thought about it and just popped another one into my basket.
You might find as I did that the tracking on the Zoom is pretty darn good, the 'Pitch' setting (I think that's the one I use) works better then any other octaver I've tried.

Oooo I like pink Fender basses

I think I need to see this beast in the flesh at some point.
I can imagine. Such beasts do come up on the Bay now and then, though...
True, I might create a 'saved search' for Shergold Marathon's on Ebay.

I like it Mark, great restoration job, as you probably know I had a fretless Shergold Marathon for many years and really regret getting rid of it

I had a five string Jazz bass with a mini toggle switch on the control plate to put it in series mode, as you say you get a slightly fatter tone and only one Volume knob works, I wouldn't say it sounded louder though just a bit fuller, I used it like that most of the time.

Ones that jump to mind out of the selection I've owned through the years are: MXR M87 - love the metering, it's like a rack compressor in a pedal. Diamond - nice thick tone, 18v though. Monty Allums modded Boss CS-3 - great compressor for the money. As mentioned above do read the Ovnilab wedsite, it's information you can trust and lots of it.

I can report that the R5 sounded fantastic yesterday so many tone variations from a passive bass, far more versatile then most basses I've owned including active ones, in general it's bright and punchy and really cuts through the mix but is less aggressive in humbucker mode then say a SR5, this thing has a character of it's own though so I shouldn't be comparing it to other basses. I've never seen the point of a tone control on passive basses as usually it just turns the sound to mud but I was using it a lot on Sunday, it nicely rolls off the highs without messing up the tone, it works a treat for more old school tunes. No bad back or shoulder ache today either! the weight and balance were spot on, it's a small bass and that also worked very well for me. Next step is to get the bass back to Dave so he can do a few tweaks for me, one being the bridge has run out of adjustment before the intonation could be pulled in to tune, on a bass with a small body placement of the Hipshot bridge can't go any further back, we might have to look at alternative bridges so the saddles can move further back, I'm not at all technical so I'll be guided by Dave. The back of the neck is satin and the fingerboard glossy at the moment I've asked Dave to make the fingerboard satin to, which he's kindly agreed to do. I'll report back in a few months when the adjustments have been done and I can do a final summary. R.

Gig bag loaded with the R5 ready for tomorrows all day rehearsal I'll report back on Monday on how the bass performed.
Make one 4 and one 5er and send them out one after the other
Great idea.

reasonably priced soapbars for 5 string bass
Rumple replied to rob hayward's topic in Repairs and Technical
If it were me I'd go some second hand ones to get as much bang for your buck, Barts or EMG's maybe? they turn up on here quite often so keep an eye on the 'for sale' thread or place a 'wanted' ad. I'd also be inclined to stick to standard sizes so if you don't like what you purchase you can swap them out at a later date. -
Thank you for that, much appreciated. I have seen the Warmoth info before plus read what I can find on other forums etc. and although the info is vague there's a possibility that the Pre 2000 MIM have a smaller pocket then the post 2000 ones. I recently e-mailed an Ebay advertiser to try and get and answer as they were selling one from 98' but alas they have failed to reply, so the quest goes on for a definitive answer

Sunny Sunday BUMP. Anyone?
-
I really like my RW Jazz, feels and sounds better then any Jazz (apart from a Tokai copy) I've owned, mine even came with a warped neck for that really neglected feel

Interparcel are good, I've used them a lot and I've had no problems using UPS via them, avoid using Hermes though, it may be the cheapest option but they have a habit of not collecting when booked and last year lost something that was sent to me by a fellow BC'er.
That means buying my 76P back from Rumple AND buying an Orange 120W valve amp. Both great ideas, actually.
I'm sorry you will have to speak up I can't hear you Mark

Looks really great, I don't get on with the MM slab bodies though, I find it a bit uncomfortable.

For a while I have been thinking about putting together a bitsa Jazz 5, but it's not proving simple as unlike the 4 string version the string spacing and the size of the neck pocket vary from model to model, age and/or where it was manufactured. From what I've managed to work out early (pre 2000) MIM models have a smaller neck pocket and narrower string spacing, could anyone help confirm or deny this for me buy measuring theirs? For those who are interested, the reason for my research is I have bought a narrow neck and it has a heal size of 71mm so if I were to fit it to a generic body it would need a pocket size in the body of 71mm or less. I like narrow necks and 17mm string spacing. Thanks R.
