1.
Unsure if its because I am naturally left handed playing right handed,, but noticed that I do use my left hand a lot for muting...
I'm also naturally left handed but play right handed and often wondered about the effect that has on technique.
2. I like this line from their website "a sparrow may be small but it has all the vital organs"
3. I spoke with Dave on the e-mail yesterday and he has now played the bass through his amp! reports are very favourable indeed he said there is loads of variety in tone from the pick-up combinations some of them are quite subtle though, he described the over all sound as thick but with plenty of clarity even the tone pot brings something to the table (unlike on some passive basses) due to the NOS paper in oil capacitor Dave has fitted. I'll be up in the West Midlands for a few days from the middle of next week and there's a possibility the R5 will be finished and ready for me to bring back to London, which would be great as I can then use it the following weekend at a rehearsal, even if it isn't quite done I'll get to try it out for the 1st time so I'm very excited.
4. I got one several years ago out of necessity and it took a little while to get used to but now I feel more comfortable using a 5 then a 4. I've realised over the years of trying different 5ers that I struggle with 35" scale and wide string spacing, a SR5 neck suits me down to the ground, you might need to try a few basses to find one that suits you.
5.
I prefer to wear a lounge suit.
7. Ilian bought and EBS compressor from me back in May, deal went through smoothly - Thanks
8.
Maybe we should start a group
What a group of bass players? like in Spinal Tap when the whole band play basses on Big Bottom
9. The SE London contingent grows! Welcome to Basschat
10. I had GAS for Trace gear during the 80's but only ever owned their GP11 pre amp which went into a Peavey power amp feeding a Peavey cab with (i think) 15" 10" & 6" speakers which was so heavy it spent most of it's life in a big caged trolley we pinched for behind a supermarket! Ended the 80's with a more sensible Peavey TNT 150
11. There is going to be one rotary pot for each of the two pick-ups: 1.Off 2.Both Coils Parallel 3.Both Coils Series 4. Single coil I'm hoping this combination will give me enough variation in sound to cover most types of music without being too complicated. I'd imagine there would be a vast difference between say the back pick-up in single coil mode and the neck pup in series, Dave has made the bass so it's easy enough to drop in some active electronics if it needs it but I'm confident for my needs it won't come to that. If after using the bass for a while I find I only use a couple of settings then I may have it rewired to simplify the wiring options - only time will tell.
12. Look forward to seeing the finished results. I'm a big fan of your choice of sale length, string spacing and nut width, SR5-ish.
13. I didn't buy anything from Rhys or sell him anything either! but he very kindly took an old 60's tape my Mother had kept and played it through his reel to reel to see if there was any recordings of me as a kid on there, saved me a pretty penny as he did it all for free. Thanks Rhys, you're a credit to Basschat.
14. I find the £8 fee Parcelforce charge isn't too hurtful when importing a pricey bass but a bit hard to swallow on the purchase of a pack of strings.
15.
I was originally going to have matching knobs on my Shuker made from the same wood as the top, but then I thought nah. It would have looked nice if the pickup cover was also matched, but then the black bridge would stand out more. I kept everything black in the end.
I'm with you on that, I'm normally not a fan of overly busy wood so for me I think having plain black pups, bridge and knobs kinda tones the overall look down a little. Your Shuker is very nice BTW
16. Dave has made me some knobs, I thought it would be better looking then just using standard shop bought ones, I found some nice looking Buffalo horn ones on Ebay but they were way too expensive. I think these will look great, at the moment they haven't been finished off and are only sitting on the top of the body not attached to a pot, in the background you can see the wiring diagram. 17.
The pickguard's just the normal one with beer bottle labels stuck on with wallpaper paste then trimmed with a scalpel and varnished.
I like that
18. This thread got me thinking that I really need to start recording our rehearsals so I've nabbed myself a secondhand H2 from Basschat as it's getting a lot of praise here I look forward to trying it out in a few weeks time.
19. I'm trying to cut down on the number of cases cluttering the place up and use Mono M80's and guitar stands instead, if I got a new bass with a case included I'd probably sell it on.
20. The one's I watched he's playing a Shuker.
21. Have you tried Dropbox? it can be used for storing anything but you can also make galleries or share links to single images, it's a handy thing to have. I use that and Flickr as well for my 3D and bass pics.
