1.
Have you any particular reason for avoiding the more conventional stacked bass/treble and push-pull active switching on the volume control?
Partly because of familiarity, I have a single H SR5 that I use most of the time that has V-M-T-B as the new bass will have two pick-ups I thought the addition of a staked V/V of V/Blend would work best for me, it's not a deal breaker, there's no point in me limiting my options because of my weird ideas
2. Been doing a little research today and on paper the Audere Classic is looking like a good option, anyone using the Classic?
3. That's a good idea, I'll drop him an e-maill initially and see what he can do for me. I have 3 John East made pre amps, the one in my Overwater, one ACG 02 in my fretless and a second 02 in a draw waiting to be used/sold I only mentioned the cost as it's twice that of say a Bart pre, I had one of those in a Roscoe and it sounded good to me just not configured how I'd like. Thanks all.
4.
It's all dependant on your needs.
Very good point, I don't think I need anything too high end, I'd be happy with a simple SR5 style set-up with the addition of a stacked volume/blend.
5. The East U Retro sounds like a top piece of kit, but I've just looked at the price and it's nearly £220, that's quite a bit more then say a Bart or Aguilar unit, is it worth the extra? especially as I'm mainly a 'set it and leave it' kinda player.
6.
Correct.
Cheers, that opens the field up a bit.
7.
I believe thats the one I now have - great bit of kit, fitted into my Precision Lyte.
Out of interest do you get a volume change going from passive to active?
8.
Get a John East U-Retro Deluxe 4-knob. They are amazing and John will advise you over the phone about your specific requirements and specs, as he did with me for my home build. They are dead easy to fit too. http://www.east-uk.com/
Thanks for the info, although it's not the layout I want it's going on the 'possibles' list as it has the passive option which I like a lot.
9. I bought 1975 pick-up and bridge covers from Michal, they arrived very quickly and I'm delighted with them. Thanks R.
10.
You do realise that you can combine pots onto a stacked pot if it doesn't fit your wanted configuration (assuming the values on the stock pots are the same as the stacked)?
No I didn't So I could get a 5 knob pre that I like and replace the Volume and Balance pot with one stacked pot?
11. I'm on the look out for a pre amp for a bass I'm having built and I've been looking at lots of options including not bothering and just having it passive, if I do go down the pre amp route I'd really like a 4 pot system with separate Bass, Mid & Treble pots and a stacked Vol/Bal or Vol/Vol but most of the pre's I've looked at don't come in that configuration, anyone know why that would be? Feel free to point me in the right direction if I've missed something that fits the bill. Cheers
12. Very nice part of the world Napier, I've only spent a couple of days there and it rained the whole time, trust my luck Thanks for the links, I'll check those out later.
13. It certainly a fun tune to play, as mentioned above you can play it in a simple way to start and add the fills as you get to grips with it or like me just play it the same each time and enjoy the groove.
14.
Thanks that's a very kind offer indeed. I am currently in Dublin, Ireland and will be back in South London probably early May. Cheers
No worries
15. I have a 212MNT and live in South London, you are welcome to bring your head and try it out, obviously at low volume though or I'd be strung up by the neighbours
16. Hello and welcome to Basschat. What part of New Zealand are you living in?
17.
This looks like another interesting build to follow. It seems like our paths are forever crossing in this part of the forum! How are you going to divide the hardware between Hipshot and Gotoh? Hipshot bridge and Gotoh tuners? Or the other way around?
It's true, Dave showed me a picture of your neck, it's going to look lovely. Yup Hipshot A Style bridge is on order and some Gotoh lightweight tuners will be bought to.
18.
ps Rumple...I work for an audio company based in Sydenham quite often
Pop round for a play on the bass and a coffe once it's done.
19.
What is the width of the neck on this build or your Stingrays? Tom
45mm at the nut, I'm not sure exactly what it will measure at the heal but the SR5 is 70mm. 17mm string spacing at the bridge.
20. Thanks, the design is my idea, I've actually mocked the whole bass up in Photoshop (I didn't post it here on purpose as I think it might be a bit of a spoiler) and sent it to Dave who did a proper plan to scale, I think he used Autocad. Dave doesn't live far from my Grandfather so we've met up to hammer out the finer detail.
21. I wasn't going to commission another build for quite a while even though I had come up with a design last summer and picked up a nice piece of Buckeye Burl during the year but as fate would have it Dave of Firecreek (nugget) wanted a pair of Aguilar GS112's and I was about to list mine in the 'Fore Sale' section, so a deal was struck and a plan hatched for a lightweight 5 string. Major points for me were it needed to have a neck very similar to a Stingray 5 as that's what I'm happy with so 34" scale 17mm string spacing etc.& have a smallish very curved edged body. Dave found a very nice piece of Ash for the main body with a crazy sort of 3D effect going on. I'm not sure what way to go with the electronics yet, I'm tempted to try it passive as I love the sound of a Jazz, maybe with the option to add a pre amp later if needed, but then again I really liked my Roscoe that had Bart pups and a Bart pre hmm..... Hardware will be black and a mixture of Hipshot and Gotoh. Here's some pics to get the ball rolling, obviously the Buckeye top will need a wee patch on the top horn. 22. I picked this old Selmer Keyboard head up from a mates Dad, it doesn't get used but I'd like to do something with it one day.
23. I have an OC-2 but as it hasn't been mentioned I thought I would throw the Zoom B3 into the mix the pitch shifter or octaver on that are pretty good and you get all the other effects thrown in! it is big though.
