I'm thinking of having a go at learning a little piano, I have a Kawai K1 synth at the back of the cupboard from the days of messing about at electronic music, although it's velocity sensitive it's not weighted like a piano so I thought I might upgrade to something that is and wondered if there is any interest in my old Kawai, it's not been used in years but as far as I remember it's in very good condition, all working and with the original power supply, I'll dig it out, test and photograph it if there is any interest at all. I've avoided Denmark St for years but this positive thread might just tempt me back, that and some noodles in China Town afterwards

For me there is definitely a time/weight ratio, personally a 10lb bass is not a killer for a couple of hours unfortunately we tend to rehearse infrequently but for 5+ hours, by the end of the session you notice the effects of those extra pounds and ounces, even more so the following day.

I got this in a trade recently and although there are things I love about it and prefer to my SR5's not least the radius of the neck, classic looks and the simple 2 band eq this superb bass is just not quit right for me so I thought I'd see if anyone wants to take it off my hands, I'm certainly not desperate to sell it. It's in excellent almost new condition apart from one very small ding - pictured, come with string mutes (not fitted at the moment) and fitted MM case. It owes me £1300 for that I'll include UK delivery, if you want to collect it from SE London then I'll knock a little off the asking price. There's not much I want so trades are restricted to a pre 74 Fender Jazz bass, Aguilar Tone Hammer 500, Sandberg Jazz 5.
It was the lack of a gloss finish on the neck of my SR5 that was another reason I got rid of it. I know they're very popular but I hate oil/wax finishes more than anything.
I'm not sure if they are oil/wax or just a matte finish rather then high gloss, anyone know? I guess SR5's don't tick any boxes for you and I don't think you are alone in that opinion, personally I love 'em
My Classic 5 was a weighty beast - probably due to the lack of any body contouring. Sounded great tho!
Mine is the heaviest bass I own and for that reason I'll probably move it on at some point, I've also decided I'm not keen on the gloss neck.
By way of comparison, my SUB Ray5 comes in at 10lb 4oz.
Cheers, I should have included those in my question
You're right. Keep them original!
That gives me a perfect reason to sell neither of them
This one is white, rosewood board, tort guard. It is a total stunner!
There goes my theory then It certainly sounds like a keeper, I like the HS idea a lot.
-
My 2011 HS SR5 is incredibly light. I'm guessing 9lbs at the most....
Interesting as the extra pick-up must add a little weight, what colour is yours? maybe it's just coincidence but the solid coloured ones I've owned have all been heavier then the trans or natural ones.
My SR5 with a Status neck weighs 9lb 4oz which is quite good considering it has a second battery for the side LEDs.
Oooh pics please?
-
Sub 9 lbs is indeed rare in a SR5. PM me if you ever want to sell that one!
I had no intention of keeping it as I love the maple neck and the look of my heavier teal one, not sure what to do now, if they were Fender's I'd just swap the necks over but I have the feeling that would knock value off of both of them as it's not something people do with MM basses, hmmm.....
-
I have a slightly abused trans teal SR5 that has a fantastic looking neck and weighs a reasonable 9.4lbs, considering I've had a couple of solid coloured one's in the past that have weighed 10.5lbs I thought that it was light for a SR5 BUT it a burst of trading on here recently I've acquired a natural one that is sub 9lbs! surely they don't come any lighter?

Is there a exact science to getting the balance right or is it down to guesstimation? I like the idea of getting a body as light as possible using chambers but I expect at some point neck dive becomes a problem?

I thought I'd post this picture from Lawrence of WIP on the body, it now has a 1mm epoxy cap on the top, this should stop any reaction between the tops vaneer and the final finish. I really like the way the brown bits show through the staining and have high hopes it's going to be stunningly unique when finished.

Sounds interesting, especially the chambered body idea.
