If it's had the vol pot replaced, it might be the wrong value - I had an active Clapton Strat in for repair that had had the vol pot replaced, but with a 250K instead of 25K, and it made a howl of feedback when it was turned up beyond about half way.

I have often been heard to say that: the fingerboard wood makes a difference the neck wood (and shape) makes a difference the type and size of the frets makes a difference the construction (neck through/bolt-on/set/etc.) makes a difference the body wood and design makes a difference the pickups (and their placement/height) make a difference passive or active tone circuits make a difference the gauge/type/make/age of strings makes a difference where on the string and how the string is struck (thumb/finger/pick/etc.)makes a difference fx/preamp/amp/cab type/number of cabs all make a difference distance from the wall/corner/etc. makes a difference the size and shape of the room makes a difference the number of people in the room makes a difference where an individual listener is standing in the room makes a difference and I'm sure there are many other things that have a large or small effect, but there is one certainty .. only you give a damn.

it's going to make one hell of a whistle !

don't spray WD40 in it, it just gums it all up eventually - use the right tool for the job (switch/contact cleaner) or replace the pot

Cheers[/quote] I'd try it as it is first - I swapped strings on a Bongo 5, even fitted a light set of 30-90s with a .025" C, and it played just fine.

I have had: 2 Rickenbacker 4003s Jetglo and Fire glo (can't find a pic) 2 Yamaha SB-Js 3 Bongo 4s HS / HH / H 4 Yamaha SBV550s 6 Yamaha SBV500s (ignore the one on the right)

I've got a std. (not short scale) set of TI flats (used, so it didn't matter quite so much if they broke) on my Bronco and has been suggested, the E especially looks a little creaky where it wraps around the tuner, but it has held so far and they sound great

just noticed that it's had a strap button fitted to the lower horn too

finally found a pic of the headstock logo that the book suggests should be on it which also has a serial no. on it - and the right tuners

having just had a nose through The Fender Bass book, it does look like a Precision Bass Plus Deluxe, except: the headstock logo doesn't look right (it looks more sci-fi in the book) and should have a serial number - right number of frets though (22) the tuners don't look right (both of which might just be that it's an earlier/later version than the one in the book) the bridge is missing the fine tuners (but is otherwise right) the pickups should be Lace Sensors and not EMGs

I was trying to get one of every model and in all the colours before I realised just how many that meant (27) though eventually I settled on just trying to get one each of the four colours the vintage models (SB-2A SB-5A and SB-7A) came in. With that in mind the total came to 19, and I got to 16 before realising it was a bit mad - the failed attempt to buy an SB-2A from a Japanese shop was not the only long-distance discussion I had. One day someone pointed out that if I sold each one for £200 then it would come to £4K, and that did make me think So I sold them all off, but I have bought the pale blue one back since then (now defretted).

it is an occasional source of amusement to think that if someone owns an SB/SBV that isn't one of the three colours sold in the UK, then there's a good chance it was once owned by me, as I bought most of those in from Japan or the US.
