I suspect the strings could be a bit cheapy-sh!t; do you reckon this could be the cause of my spurious intonation?
that's the obvious one, if all the other strings are ok

I've got two, a 4HS I've had for a couple of years, and I recently picked up a 4HH/piezo. (I've also had a 4HH without piezo, a 4H and a 5HS and very nearly bought the HS that dub_junkie mentions - maybe one day ) I rarely use anything else and absolutely love the sound and playability of them. I wasn't that sure of the look at first, but they've grown on me over the time I've had them and everything I've bought has failed to beat the Bongo for sound.

She was (solo now, IIRC) singer and bass player with Japanese band Supercar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rum27ojovo8

Nice (but not all that acoustic, they make the top quite thick) bass, that works best when plugged in. Fitted with TI Jazz flatwounds - it's comfortable to play and the output is balanced across all strings. One or two light marks on the finish, but no nasty chips or dings. No case or gig bag. £200.00

The last one for sale from The Collection of 16 similar basses, it appears these are no longer in production. Comes with a fitted gig bag, the weirdest looking thing you're likely to see Fitted with P and J passive pickups, it's still very loud, and weighs only 8 1/2 lbs. All the SBVs have (IMHO) nice comfortable necks, and it's surprisingly well balanced considering the shape. Imported from Japan by myself, it's spent most of the time hanging on the wall, and as such is virtually unplayed. £375.

9 3/4lbs according to my crappy kitchen scales, it's currently equipped with TI Jazz flatwounds, and offers a huge range of tones from the Kent Armstrong lipstick pickups via the Bartolini preamp. http://www.lakland.com/basses/scheff.htm - lists the differences between this and the full on US version, which are .. not very much ! There are sound clips on the Lakland site too, which give you some idea of what is possible from this bass. Comes with a Carvin gig bag, though I have a Warwick hard case that might (not checked) hold it if preferred. £550

It did come out rather well, though I'm not responsible for the lovely wood underneath Trev, I forgot to take pics of the job, would it be ok to use (as in add to my flickr page) yours ?

It was built as a test/show bass, with multiple pickups to give potential customers more variety to try out. It's had cutaways added front and rear and the neck thinned since I first built it, and I've changed the original BareKnuckles for Basslines to see what they sound like. It had passive circuitry originally too, but after a chat with John regarding dealing with the number of pickups, I decided to add a U Retro to the mix. The first pot is a typical U/J Retro vol/balance control which blends the J pickups and the P pickup, the second single pot is a blend for the two J pickups and the other two are the usual U Retro tone controls. It's only 7 1/2 lbs, which is good, but the oil finish on the soft swamp ash body makes it a little fragile (I've already marked it !) I'm probably going to make a small matte black scratchplate to save further marking to the finish. Next time I strip it down I may paint it for a bit of extra protection, we'll see how the oil finish fares Gigging tonight, so I might take it along for a change from the Bongos I usually use.

Finally put my old show bass back together and stuck a U-Retro in it it sounds massive !

weird, it all looks fine in Firefox 2.0.0.4 for me
