I must admit - I bought mine on the strength of more good reviews than bad. TBH I don't do an awful lot on it yet. Have only come back to bass recently and playing my Overwater most of the time. Haven't played the Stagg a great deal, more playing around at home so far. I am starting lessons this week and the tutor also plays DB so I am going to try and fit a few pointers in there as well I am on the south coast (Bognor) so if you ever get down this way give me a shout and you can try it out. Cheers, Brian
something tells me I should wait until the kids aren't around to have a look at that one
You'll be safe - it's not that bad/good (delete as appropriate depending on your point of view)!

I have a Stagg which I like - not got too far with it yet but am enjoying learning. I haven't tried the others, but I am pretty sure the Harley Benton is a rebadged Palatino. I believe HB is Thomann's "own brand" though I could be wrong. Worth looking through the Double bass/EUB section here (try searching on the names of the basses). Also worth looking at Talkbass as they have a large number of users and have discussed the Stagg and Palatino alot. Not sure about the Gear4Music one as that is another rebadged bass I suspect. As with most basses, you are going to find people who like one over the other but often it is subjective. Not always easy to try them out (not many people seem to keep them is stock round here) but if you get the chance then do so. Probably also worth mentioning what type of music you intend playing on it as this may make a difference. And it might also be worth checking out second hand - A new NS Wav isn't too far over your budget and that starts to be thought of as a level higher than the ones you mentioned. lots of questions and not many answers!

Aaah - didn't know that - thanks

Further to my earlier posts about GAK - was in there yesterday and all the staff I spoke to were great, both in the bass section and the pro-audio. And if the guy from the bass section is reading this the divorce lawyer is on hold (for the moment at least ). Oh, and there was a young teen slapping away on a bass in there at the time
not met many pros then. If someone makes a living from playing bass then surly they are a real bassist more than if it is someone’s hobby or aspiration of a career.
That's rather a contentious statement. Sounds as though it needs a thread of it's own if it doesn't already have one. Edit: and should have quoted iamapirate as he started it

True - I posted a link to the original sale on 8th July. Sale presumably fell through for some reason, though usually that gets mentioned in the new listing.

I was saying something similar on a different thread - Zoot Performer didn't sell at £299. Hand made bass and not a single bid.

I can't believe that this didn't sell. I almost bid for it myself, even though I'm not after a four-string fretted bass at the moment.

Hi guys - welcome to BC. I have recently come back to bass after some years away, seems to be a theme going on here.
I would say generally good service in GAK and I only ever had one problem in the bass section and Mark in basses has helped me out on several occasions.
I must have been unlucky and always missed Mark Whereas in the pro-audio section it has always been good.
Well a friend of a havy-rocker's friend apparently has tickets to see extreme in Brighton some time soon? I've checked out their website and can't see anything about them playing in the UK ever again! just wondering if this is some silly rumour or is anyone going to this gig? Cheeeerrrrsss
Friday 22 December, The Engine Room, Brighton - The Extreme Train. Would that do?
I live an hour from bighton so GAK is always an option (they're great there as far as I can tell!).
Whereas I have found them to be ageist the other way... Not always, but more often than not.

Seems to be (with my limited ability) - I checked on here whether I should get a 4/4 or a 3/4 considering the Stagg was a 3/4 and was advised to get a 4/4. So I did I have found a bass teacher near me who teaches BG but also plays DB, so I am hoping to pick up some tips from him. First lesson next week

Don't see anything to disagree with there Pete, and I have worked in retail as well (in photography). Yes there are bad stores and there are also good stores. And some are great. And what you said about youth is one of the reasons I gave up teaching. And again it's by no means all, but it doesn't take many to paint a bad picture.
Yours is the fancy-pants "pro" type I see So far, I'm very pleased. It doesn't make my playing any better unfortunately!
Same here - though now I have a 5 string I have a 25% greater number of bum notes to hit!
Went into Guitar Guitar today "for a look". Deadly. Got (I think) a very good deal on the following...
is there a website for the Bass Cellar? If you google them this thread is the first listing
Doesn't appear to be one as such - all the listings that show a link show www.wom.co.uk - and they don't seem to have any basses on their links. Might explain some of the comments - maybe they want the space.
