1. Can you imagine the look on his face when he opened the box to find this...
2.
Just had a look at that on Amazon and it looks ideal for my needs at the moment too - ordered! Many thanks for the heads-up
Same here, mine arrived today - looks to be a worthwhile purchase
3. I think that in some way it is connected to having too much choice. Don't know if you saw the clip about increased choice leading to dissatisfaction on the Boutique Basses thread (think it was that one) but that is how I feel about a lot of things. For me at least, you always think that there is something better than what you have and that leaves you dissatisfied with what you have, no matter how good it is. It doesn't affect everybody the same way, but it does go someway to explain things such as some people being gadget freaks (again, guilty). I'm trying to change the way I look at things as I know this is always causing me problems (and it gets expensive ). In the meantime I look at just about every bass that comes up in the for sale section!
4. Good to hear - especially as jazz is something I'd be interested in
5.
Ha ha You just need Kiwi's MIDI Shuker It's a great tune and falls under the fingers just right. Ipop in a few harmonics and a bend. No one else will ever play it as a bass try out tune so it gives the staff something else to listen to
I spent a good few years (in those dark years without a bass) playing that sort of stuff, though usually more Irish than English, on acoustic guitar and bouzouki. Must give it a go on bass
6.
The Slider just doesn't do it for me. It's too finicky to get right, and it's a pain if you have to keep putting it on and taking it off. A clever idea, and maybe it would be fine for a gig where you just put on the bass and keep it there, but it's of limited use at rehearsals.
I can imagine - I bought something very similar this to carry a camera - used it twice and put it away never to be seen again.
The Dare is much better, really easy to use and you can use it as a conventional single strap without any effort at all. Two down-sides though: 1. There's a slight "scissors" action to the two straps and if you're wearing a t-shirt it can rub your neck badly. 2. Inevitably it alters the way your bass hangs and there's only so much you can do about it.
I (we) have one of these. My wife has just started learning bass and was finding a normal strap not enough as she is quite small and slim (unlike me!), so we got one. While she likes the weight distribution the scissor action causes her problems at times
7. I would have thought that the issue isn't so much the plugs (though they can short circuit more easily from what I've read) but if you use jack plugs into amps and cabs you are running the risk of someone connecting them with an instrument cable as opposed to a speaker cable by mistake. That could be dangerous. But it hasn't happened to me.
8. I've been looking for a bass teacher recently and have just come across a website for someone by the name of Gary Simons. He has moved to my area and has previously been a tutor at Leeds College of Music. I've emailed and currently waiting for a reply. Anyone know of him? Or is he a member here even? He plays double bass as well as BG so that could prove useful.
9. Can't believe that is still here. Looks a bargain for someone wanting a first fiver.
10.
This:
Great tone! What combination of bass, effects, amp and eq do I need to get that? And I usually wait till there's no one else around before I play anything in a shop
11.
that's nuts! What the hell is on his thumb though?
Looks as though he's using something like Funk Fingers on his thumb. Now there's an idea... Funk Thumbs!
12.
Oh ! In that case it's every other bass in the world that doesn't and just the Squier that does .
13. On the Squier site for this model you can look at the specification. Under "Unique features" is Side Dot Position Inlays
14. Hmmmm Was laughing at that one when my wife came to have a look and said she had seen one of those pics before. Is there something she isn't telling me?!
15. My wife is reading the Independent at the moment which has a "50 best handbags" feature today. She just pointed out one that costs over 4 grand... I think a 3 grand bass is a bargain - and she agrees!!
16. Yes - like the look of this but I don't get down your way very often
17.
Although the bottom cutaway could use a little tweak to make the cutaway a tad less deep perhaps.
I think given the length of the fingerboard that is a nod towards the Zon Hyperbass idea. Now that one is cut a little deeply I do like the look of the Uberhorn though, especially that piece of wood.
18. Just bought a USB keyboard off Chris - great guy to deal with, it's even better than he said
19. In a strange case of synchronicity when I opened this thread the ad at the top was for David Sanborn on a Jazz Cruise. No mention of MM though and you'd need to get to the states to join the cruise.
20. Thanks for that - picked it up yesterday and will give it a try over the weekend.
21. I don't know that one but there are a lot of reasonable cheap basses around these days, though you often have to find the right one from a batch to get a good one. If possible, you are better looking through the for sale section here. Most prices on BC are often very good compared to elsewhere and the people here are usually great to deal with. For not very much more than that you can often pick up something like a second hand Squier VM or Vibe - there are usually at least one or two of those for sale on BC, and the quality is more reliable.
22.
Thats a very expensive way to toast bread though.....
Could be handy if you get the munchies halfway through a gig. Give the vocalist something to do during the instrumental number!
23. That was the one I nearly bid on. One of the reasons I didn't was I thought you might be after it. Shame you didn't get it though - they just don't understand what's important sometimes!
