1. I tend to draw from others opinions only what I can pick up based on the experience on which those opinions are based , a lot of opinions are based on taste or style for instance , and thus completely arbitrary. For instance a lot of the discussion on 'tone' seems irrelevant to me because it often seems that the discussions aren't contextualised at all.
2. I am with you on that one Dad, I think they are all of a cracking standard , my call will be a tough one this time thats for sure.
3. A great gig last night , and somewhat of a surprise. There are a few venues we would like to have a crack at, that book through an agency , so we gave our details for consideration not expecting too much. Well we have been offered loads of gigs !! but explained we werent up for filling the diary as we are not short of gigs ourselves and the gigs offered always clashed , but a short notice one came up last night in Holywell which we took , and it was brilliant, we had the place bouncing. The sound seemed spot on, song choice nailed it and the landlords comment , was that we would definately be asked back Always a bonus , so now we hope to be getting onto wanted list of this agency , maybe the rates might pick up if the feedback works our way .
4. We recently bought the EVs and I think they are brilliant , we rock out and they have filled some decent sized venues , at a friends party we did the other month we played his own ipod playlist through fairly cranked and they sounded superb . We did an acoustic set at a fundraiser and the organisers did a quiz so we set them up through our PA and the voice souded so natural and clean sounding. All a bit sad , but as I normally stand at the back its not often I get to listen to them to thoroughly
5.
Sounds like our drummer...
6.
Would uploading a tweaked mix be within the rules? No worries if not, I'll upload it afterwards.
the composition would be expected to be written, recorded and produced after the publication of the photo which is intended to provide the inspiration , so anything done before then would be an infringement of the rules . you can do as much work or rework to a qualifying composition as long as you identify it as your entry, so that it can be linked to .
7. Well done Ironside , and may I concur with what you said . I made some notes but they were all similar in the context that I think a lot were bass heavy and the vocal didn't really cut through. I went for No8 as I thought it got the balance about right . with mine I did not overly complicate my mix I just EQ'd but tried to wide pan the guitars so it sounded wider with a bit of autopanning in a few places to move it around a bit , I did a bit of side chain compression on the guitars using the vocal so that it gave it a bit more space , it did give a bit of a pulsey feel which I quite liked. I probably could have brought the bass up a bit , but it sounded quite rounded to me , and once again thanks to Subsonic for the vote
8.
I voted mix 3, I felt that the vocals had good clarity on this mix, and that the bottom end was nice and tight. Sounded less modern than the other mixes in a good way IMHO.
Thats brilliant , the first time in the history of the challenge that I have had the privelidge of a vote . I am pleased that it struck a chord , many thanks .
9. I have voted now , a difficult call , but made nevertheless, well done all .
10.
Demm! I felt sure twas about voting for BC compositions.
This months compositions are busy being composed in the main, I think the Mixing challenge is still taking votes though
11. Ha Ha, I just bought a focusright compressor to replace one of these , dead good it is too do you have a stash of compressors you are working through
12. I bought EZ drummer as a) my new computer is x64 and I struggled to make my drumcore work on it and I recall there was a silly offer on to shift EZdrummer 1 prior to the release of 2 , so it came for pennies effectively , and it will do me for a good while I would have thought .
13. I tend to look at a picture and let my head tell me if the story needs words to express it. some I think work best as instrumental but then I might have to improvise on a musical style to suit , so pretty much everything I do is a learning curve , though I have had vocals help and contributions from our bands singer ( and Lurksalittle) on 3 compositions , this month was me
Well done on the pole position, Lurks!
I think Dad was first in with his lightning skills
14. It still confuses the be-jesus out of me , but , I'm in with a nice gentle jobby this month . I must say though that my soundcloud mix does sound muddier than my own , maybe it gets compressed a bit , but the processing does seem to have dulled it a touch, having said that , I don't currently have the knowledge to address the influence that the soundcloud uploading process has exerted, so when a multi million pound offer comes in to buy the rights, I shall let some-one else deal with the problem , but until then I offer for your enjoyment ( or masochism) ... https://soundcloud.com/lurksalot/fall-at-your-feet
15. There are loads of drum samples about , I have used drum machines , Drumcore 3 (free) , and currently playing with EZ drummer which was about £20. I use Reaper as a DAW it is well supported with free plug ins and tutorials , and boy do I need them
16. Oh , mines the normal cack Ian , I had another listen last night and think I might need to do a bit more work to it I have have been trying at this for well over a year , and it still feels like everyone one is a first time , I am really not sure when I will get the hang of it
17. I have one just about ready aswell , I am just trying to persuade the daughter to do some warbling for me . I will try to work out a melody/ harmony for her later and we will hopefully try tommorrow . If she decides not to then I can post my tune up straight away .
18.
Following the leads above, you will return home to find the box missing. When you ask your wife, you be told either that it has been sold or donated to a charity shop.
I find it a good trick to ensure that I regularly 'forget' to put things away after me . I tend to find that the whinge about tidying up is much more preferable to the scarier arguments of getting rid of stuff I don't use all the time . At least the subconscious knows I am using kit , because it doesn't always sit in one spot
19. I will have one last go at inviting offers for these complete/split/dismantled or whatever . if anyone has a need for the kit let me know as I will start another project with them now that it is warm enough to get back into the garage
20.
once the voting is in, it will be interesting to find out which BRX and the band favour.
yes , good call , I did think of asking for mix requirements , but soon realised that I probably havent yet learnt the skills to implement them , but I did listen to a few tracks to try to get a feel for the band , but probablly still was well wide of the mark
21.
You've a long way to go; not even warm (although I'm very capable of forgetting just that..!). Think 'massive'...
Unless you mixed the wrong song in somewhere , I cant hear it I find them all a bit bottom heavy to be honest , the vocal just doesnt seem to cut through on a few of them , I have made some iffy notes but they seem to repeat a bit . I will vote soon enough, but I still quite like mine
22. did you forget to turn head phones round to check the other way
23. Ah , thanks for popping in and taking the p1ss then
