Wow Mike , I am just reading your book , for the third time , I must admit it went over my head the first time , started to make a few things click the second time , but this time I am starting to see a load of wood through the trees . A real insight well done. Our BC Mentor, Si , is great at advice and is really helpful aswell , even to the point of hosting the competition , top man .

I have something down now , I am unsure whether it needs vocal embellishment or not , but it needs a title , to point the listener to the correct vibe tying the pictures in more than anything , but 'Doo Wap Dandelions in Dyfed' , doesnt really do it , but 'Hypericum of Harlem' ..........Hmmmmm.

Welcome Guy , If you were at a loose end at all, you could join us in the monthly composition competition , though nailing one , getting 1 million votes, and going platinum would be considered a touch over the top
I think the ideas can come reasonaly quickly but, like someone said, its 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. I get a melody or chored sequence or some other concept going (a riff, a theme, a rhythmic idea etc) and then, like clay, start moulding it. The first bit is easy, the second bit is where the real work takes place. Sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it is like pulling teeth. I have read a lot about composing and most composers say the same. Some things just land in your lap, other things take forever to come together.
I have only just started to record , pretty much for the BC competition , and thus someone else provides the clue for the inspiration bit so its 99.9 % perspiration for me

Brilliant , let me know the next gig details and I will pin it on the map

How Long on Stage Before You Get Your Mojo on?
lurksalot replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Second set normally for me , as I do the sound and lights aswell . We have a bad habit of rushing a sound check, though we are alawys close , but some rooms we play are difficult to set to. the last gig was in a restauarant that couldnt give us the stage untill 9.15 when we were billed from 9.00 . we play more melodic first half and getting it going drags my concentration everywhere , but by the second set I can let go and enjoy it . -
My creative process starts with picture on the monthly composition thread I have got loads of song writing ideas and a few lyrics that have been written at times that I needed to write them, but they will always remain that way I guess , but give me a reason to make it happen , I can normally do something.
aim for something 'jazzy' and 'urban'... once I've decided on what those words mean
Ah, I think you will be sticking a pin in the dictionary a few times , listing the words you pick, then rapping them with a few friends alternately....... at a random time signature
Interesting images but one thing I have noticed on here is how important backbeats are to most folk. If one tries to create a Jazz feel, it is harder because the level of playing s is higher and getting a jazz feel out of sequencers and midi is nigh on impossible . We shall see where this takes us
I dont know jazz AT ALL , but having done a bit of research , could I describe it as a sonic version of artists throwing paint at a canvass , in turn , while the others hold the canvas , with a 'this is my colour ......splat' , and see what turns out ?

I get there are some 'tunes' but do they ever get played the same way twice ?

Not dissing it , but is there anything to get apart from everyone having a good splat ? ( and obviously enjoying themselves )

Because I fear I may have some fun with this one

I will try and spark up something for this one , it might be a bit odd again , but hey ho
I thought you'd be finished by now Bilbo....
quality
can i just steal your idea and pass it off as my own.... would really improve my chances
I could remix it , it would be unrecogniseable then

download Reaper , I already mentioned it , 60 day free evaluation of the FULL package , and it works , even for me ed , you even quoted my reco back in post #61
-
I fear that logic is waaaayy beyond me, as it sounds a bit like pro , even at 1, never mind 9 ed but it doesnt do VST from a quick google . what that means in the real world , someone who knows sh*t will say
-
Sorry Milt , I missed the course bit that you have signed up for , yeah , do that , it will start to put lots of your ideas into perspective .
Here's a visual example...
Total overkill , but awesome , next is to maybe introduce some of that skill into one of the comps , when I can use it, I will demonstrate a practical understanding and application , and I fear that bit will take some time
-
Its simple , just download the VST ..... just a thought .. do you have a DAW that doen't do VST ? or Download Reaper , then download the VST , it is purely to level out the mixes so that volume is not an influence of the quality. this is a 'never mind the width , feel the quality' kind of competition
Cheers for the viewpoint, Lurks! Yeah, I get that it's a learning curve, but it is kinda the direction I want to go in, so if I spend some time and money now, and decide that it's not for me, at least i'm not shelling out and wasting years on a course I won't ever use, if that makes sense? I reckon I likely will like it though. I've kind of jumped the gun too and bought Logic Pro 9 (I got loads of iTunes gift vouchers for christmas and my birthday so used them on that). Maybe I will get involved in the mixing comp, but I never really intended on mixing and mastering my own recordings, just recording them and farming off the recordings for somebody else to work their magic on. I reckon that would be worth whatever it costs, rather than trying to fluff my way through it. I'm guessing the mixing comp has closed for this month anyway, eh?
NOOOOOOOOOOO Do it Milt ( This month is still OK , it is running over ) You HAVE to understand the process , if you are no good at it , get someone to do it , but you dont need to do a course , just get involved , you have great confidence in all the reviews you do , just apply a bit of yourself . I love the way you would pass off the mixing and mastering to someone else with the confidence that the recording is totally in your control and sorted, it kind of has a really sweet naivety to it . ed for sp

the word is that active monitors are the way to go , for your budget there should be some quality to be had , there is a very recent thread on this. I am on the monitor hunt , or will be soon
