Can you tell me what precisely was fitted? One type is good and the other could be a waste of money. Balcro.
The license did not specify 'sound insulation glazing' it specified double glazing , the spec of the glazing was irrelevant to the license as long as 2 pieces of glass were there , Ironically , the pub window frames were/are glazed with 6.4 lam , so stretching a point they already were double glazed. we fitted 6mm tough secondarys with a 100mm space anyway , the techies thought it would be a good job. and everyone seems happy .
2. Had a bit of a party gig last night in Chester , The rythm guitar had a birthday so his mates came , the lead guitar is a teacher at a local school and loads of the teachers came , singers family came , drummers workmates all came , and a few of my mates came , so all in all it was real fun . I have to say though ,without the crowd we brought , the place would have been a sparce, we provided loads of posters but none were put up , they hadn't even bothered to chalk our name on the blackboard.
3.
Most of those limiters have been fitted long after the local authority have become involved because of complaints. They are often the only practicable way (from the venue owners point of view, not the band's) of keeping the noise level under control. It's cheaper to fit one of those than do a proper noise insulation job by installing double windows and extra lobbies. The local authorities can't instantly tell the venues to do a specific job such as "you must build double windows on the front wall" or "you must build an extra entrance lobby beyond the existing one". The owners always have the option to do what is called "alternative works that will achieve the same effect". The building work could cost thousands, a noise limiter probably costs a little over £1000 for a simple installation. Wiring the alarm up to openable doors or windows probably only costs a few hundred more.
I am not so sure about this , I recently did a contract installing secondary sound insulation glazing to a pub in Crewe, apparrantly the terms of the music license included double glazing, and the last inspection noted that the place was single glazed . I was half way through some getting all the sound info to present to the brewery when I realised there was no stipulation of noise levels to work on , the spec was purely 'double glazed' . It cost a lot more than £1K and the brewery were happy to sort it out.
4. ER20's here also , though strangely , we seem louder at rehearsal , so regularly use them then, but at gigs I don't seem to need them the same , maybe its an adrenalin thing .
5. A lot would come down to personality , I am not overly shy but I don't seek the thrill of soloing , I am happy to do my thing as best as I can supporting the band and creating the canvas for the fiddly technical stuff . I see the bass as generally an accompanyment instrument but that does not mean it will produce an easy route to competence .Anyone looking to take up an instrument on the basis of a percieved ease of learning is heading for a fall . That sounds like a very lazy approach , and seems to miss the point of picking up the instrument in the first place .
6. Our guitarist makes and tinkers with his own amps and ALWAYS uses an RCD . Mainly because me made him as he blew the main RCD at the community centre reheasal room one night , and the door to the consumer unit was locked. the flower arrangers at the other end of the building were not amused.
7.
I'd say the spikey heels are for a space chick.
Hmmmm
As for the footwear.... I'm comfortable with my choice
There used to be a certain 'ahem' thing about girls in comfortable shoes
8. Legwork and recomendation works for us. We visit pubs and leave cards and song lists , have a chat and build a rapport if we can, I know a few places from being in bands and drinking over the years so that helps , as have the other lads . Pubs don't often make a massive margin for the privelidge of putting on a band , so we try to be realistic with fees, but parties and weddings often crop up from a good gig. we've been quite lucky as a few landlords have given us recomendations to others , and we have been told by a few that they rate us quite well against some local bands that I rate as good , so we try to be confident without expecting too much . it seems to work out OK . The landlord has their job , but I often get a bit confused as to why they would discuss their selling and promotion techniques with each other. It is fine if there are plenty of punters to share about , but nowadays it seems more and more pubs need an edge to keep busy.
9. Back in from the Potters Wheel in Buckley where we did a turn Great sounding venue , low roof and a long wide room with no beams meant quite a clean and open sound , used my new amp , cheers Ben , and for a rig weighing in at next to nothing the sound really punched it's way through . Some top dancing , from some well good movers helped the night turn from good to great , again not a massive crowd but the manager was pleased with the turnout and performance , and a return is in the diary. The only bummer, is the best dancer wanted to book us for her birthday bash , but the date doesn't fit . shame, cos she has been before and loves what we do , and we like watching her dance
10.
Yes, sorry I didn't mean that everyone should have their action as low as possible, just trying to illustrate the fact that I think a good setup is best done in an intuitive way rather than a mathematical way. That's why (exactly as you said) it's best to learn to setup your instrument yourself, because no-one will ever do it as well as you can yourself. The majority of people I did setups for just said "make it play really nice" when I asked them how I liked their action. I only had a small percentage of people tell me how they liked it, and I certainly never had anyone ask for a really high action. I guess maybe the majority of people who are paying someone else to re-string and set up their instrument don't really know what they do or don't like with regards to action as long as it feels okay and isn't causing them any problems?
I know where you are coming from on this one , not guitar related, but some customers know exactly what they want, specify it , and are chuffed when you do it . Others are happy for you to do as you see fit and mostly are happy , though some then think that you could have done more , and without specifying what they wanted (because they often don't know what they want) are are then a bit miffed when they don't get the latest guru tech spec (that looks after itself) that they percieved they would get .
11.
Hamfatter.
Fair play , good spot ,
12. I had a chuckle on Tuesday when he said that he liked Fleet Foxes , he said they weren't overtly commercial, now, correct me if I am wrong , and I can't find a reference , but I remember seeing an episode of Dragons den where a band effectively sold a share of itself to peter jones . was that band not the fleet foxes ?
13. Awesome wedding gig last night in a marquee in the middle of nowhere to about 200 peeps 20-30 people on the dance floor alll night (bar 2 numbers) and we rocked out 36 songs !! We had a PA amp blow at sound check but I used my power amp in lieu , and my warwick profet 3.2 is normally my preamp but handled the rig fine . our new led cans worked superb. we stopped for a 10 min break and as soon as we did the generator ran out of deisel , after a 10min top up we started again. The daft thing is the side of the marquee was open for the outside crowd , but it pi55ed down halfway through the 2nd set and we didn't notice. All the extension cables from the generator where soaking wet as were speaker/xlr cables and a takiamine 12 string !!! but it wasn't until we were packing away that it became obvious. everything seems to have dried out just fine LOADS of bullets dodged and a great party for everyone .

16.
[PEDANTRY] I think you'll find that's plectrum. To prevent further confusion: plectra is plural, plectrum is singular. [/PEDANTRY]
Ah come on , your not telling me you can't use at least 2 plectra at the same time ? you must have small hands , maybe Spike could do 64ths at 720 bps with a bit of practice
17. I have no issue with whichever playing style someone uses , but one thing I have noticed is that if I start bouncing around at a gig it is easier to keep control of actually playing the notes if I throw the pick away and use my fingers , it somehow feels that I can keep my hand in position better when the guitar is moving about a bit
18. We played at the Llay Gala last night, it was supposed to be outside in a small marquee , but the weather was so bad we set up inside , It was a bit of a struggle getting any crowd involvement , and we chopped the set about on the fly to get some interest, it worked a bit , but while everyone seemed to enjoy it , it lacked the vibe of a normal pub gig. It was a big room though and I suppose we were on early before a disco/ Kareoke , and there were a lot of children running around. All in all we enjoyed it , but I think we worry too much about the audience reaction sometimes, we know our stuff and should really just nail it , If we look as if we are having a good time it will rub off, Still , I think we are back again next year
19. I only used a pick on my bass once , One good swing, and the guitar was firewood , never really understood the obsession with them after that .
20. I use one of these for my keys , a great practice amp ,with a surptisingly good sound, and a bargain ...

22. Graham Tristram I have no idea of his competence as a musician , but I bought his guitar from his mum , and it only had 4 strings , so I learned to play it , ipso facto ergo historantum Ed to add , I just googled him and found him straight off , first result, I think I shall say hello
23. I understand that DSR and internet shopping is big and will get bigger, but at some point do we really want warehouses in the countryside and boarded up high streets ? I am sure what comes around goes around , but if you don't use it you lose it ... please leave any other meta 4's and similies here before i get sick of my own !!
