July Composition Challenge----- Voting time ----
lurksalot replied to lurksalot's topic in General Discussion
August is up and ready to go -
Many thanks for the votes for the July challenge, much appreciated. As is my duty, for this month I have chosen the following photo. "whilst a bit chill, it's almost like someone has stolen the fire from the sun... so maybe chilling ! " Simple rules ✔️ Entries must be <5 minutes and recorded between now and the deadline. ✖️ No illegal samples, copyright infringements or other snide goings-on ✖️ Bagpipes. please no bagpipes, there was a truce worth noting this month, but we missed it! ✖️ No voting for your own entry. We'll know. And we'll shame you.. Deadline wise , we will go for midnight on the 25th which means it will probably be sharpish on the 26th* A line or two of blurb as well for the vote thread will be lovely. Have fun * I may be away that weekend so I might have to lean on a dep to post the voting thread , but we'll see nearer the time.

Many thanks Douglas and also thanks to all who join in on the challenge. I’ll sort a picture out this evening 👍 -
My monitoring always seems spot on , just the recording seems advanced like I was playing ahead of the beat. I suspect a latency correction somewhere that over compensates. I reckon that I might find it somewhere , but in my small scale , simplistic approach , the workaround doesn’t stress me out too much 😁
-
Could be , but I don’t really understand the intricacies of the software , especially the vagaries of the interaction between plugins, Reaper and of course, other plugins. I just make sure to remember that I might need to reset a track occasionally and not beat myself up because my playing is ahead of the beat, because it isn’t 😁
-
My ‘latency’ is bizarre ! when I play along to a track, I monitor through the computer back to the interface so that any FX are sent back with the signal . it always sounds pretty tight. when I listen back , the recorded track is always early and needs retarding slightly. I guess there is a setting that auto adjusts the latency that overdoes it. this is reaper as it happens though !

Lovely bass , but the window behind it has really got me intrigued 😂 -

Welcome to the end of July folks! We have another splendid crop of entries from the gang this month based on a phot provided by last month's winner @AndyTravis He offered some words of encouragement with the photo ... "Taken a good few years ago, walking home from the pub in a storm. Lightning and Street Lighting…" Here are your entries this month , please vote for your favourite 3 1 @Dad3353 A stroke of luck, a lucky strike... 2 @Leonard Smalls In my ongoing series of Songs From The Shows, here's my version of Rogers and Hammerstein's classic from South Pacific, "Happy Talk", as done by Captain Sensible. The lightning dictated the use of a vocoder and hence, the slight title change... 3 @NickD A tune about racing the weather home... probably from the pub. 4 lurksalot A bolt from the Black , I'll never get it back, did I ever have it, yakkety yak . 5 @xgsjx I'm in. 6 @upside downer Yet another drunken evening. It helps him to pass the time here. He's waiting for something, but what? He explores the skies every night but, so far, nothing. When will they come back for him? He waits and waits. It's all he can do... 7 @Doctor J I couldn't shake off the feckin Street Lightning idea so tried to make it work. Conspiracy theorists wearing tinfoil hats and attracting sky-based electrocution was the best I could do. 8 @AndyTravis all I could think of was Ride The Lightning ....and then when I set about it, I realised I haven’t played any metal, let alone early Metallica for about 25 years. 9 @Wolfram I thought I'd get back to bass-ics with this one. I present a haunting solo bass improvisation to conjure up a surreal, distant thunderstorm on a long, dark night. well pick the bones out of that lot, I reckon you'll find it very difficult. get your favourites down to 3 , then tick the boxes. superb selection I reckon Voting will close at midnight on 31st July

I'm in with lots of noise based on the photo from Andytravis. A bolt from the Black , I'll never get it back, did I ever have it, yakkety yak . EZ drummer and VGiron do the heavy lifting here , with lead guitar using Ibby 6er through Waves Gtr3 FX and my little 'Fleabass' stomping its way along the low end (warts 'n' all) . All in Reaper I tried using the Melda dynamicEQ from the free download but got lost in it., the 'tutorials' I found didn't really help me make any noticeable difference to the sound on mine , so it's probably just me
-
That’s mainly it , she was being massively promoted on the radio while in obvious trouble with addiction and everyone just seemed to ignore it . This song just seems to pretend that it wasn’t a problem, then it killed her.
-
Amy Winehouse , Rehab , absolutely loathe it
-
If you have a signal chain you like, put that into the interface , mine is a scarlet2i4 , but I tend to plug instruments straight into it and do the FX in reaper .

Congrats to @AndyTravis on last month's success. We start the second half of the year with a reminder of some of the weather that broke after the lovely June sunshine. "Taken a good few years ago, walking home from the pub in a storm. Lightning and Street Lighting…" Simple rules ✔️ Entries must be <5 minutes and recorded between now and the deadline. ✖️ No illegal samples, copyright infringements or other snide goings-on ✖️ Bagpipes. please no bagpipes, there wasn't a truce worth noting this month, and if there was, we probably missed it! ✖️ No voting for your own entry. We'll know. And we'll shame you.. Deadline wise , we will go for midnight on the 24th which means you'll probably have till tea-time on the 25th A line or two of blurb as well for the vote thread will be lovely. Have fun

Well Done @AndyTravis well deserved , a worthy winner 👍 -
What do you play at soundcheck?
lurksalot replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
Used to play roadhouse blues, it was great to set the levels , bring the vocal in then play it through. then of course the guitarist just turns every thing up for the set proper ! -
Congrats to @upside downer for a great win in May , and crazily we are nearly halfway through the year. So without further ado, here are the tunes inspired by the image ... "These are troubling times. Let's all try to be a bit more like this happy, blissful soul." Have a listen through and vote for your favourite 3 entries 1 @Dad3353 Wanted, to Buy: Adult Trampoline. Mine was very recently stolen; urgently required as I'm coming down very fast now. 2 @AndyTravis Lazy summer days, unplanned fun. 3 @NickD It was an interesting journey... It was going to be a chilled Bossa, then it was going to be a chilled bossa with a lo-fi triphop thing going on, then I found a little loop that I really dug and started messing around with, and the Bossa idea went out of the window. It ended up as a kinda sparse, kinda brief, lo-fi ditty about escaping the rat race and running to the sun. 4 @Leonard Smalls I felt the pic needed summery discofunk with a housey piano and lots of funky clav. So instead I did this experimental piece based on Derek Bailey and Steve Lacey's freejazz improv classic, Company 4. 5 @Tripehound Bit of an ambient feel as the subject matter is intriguing but also melancholic. 6 @upside downer A pretty little ditty with a feel good vibe to make you want to forget all your troubles, jump up, kick your heels in the air and enjoy the simple things in life. 7 @Wolfram It's been a long day, the beach party has been epic, and now with the last of the midsummer sunlight the DJ is chilling things down with some minimalist, ambient textures. 8 lurksalot A bit of a noodle fest using garageband to show a happy ending That's your lot Enjoy the listen that is a pretty tidy bunch in there and place your 3 ticks in your favourite's boxes voting will close at midnight on the 30th June

I can't leave it any longer without missing my own voting thread ! any way , let me get collating the vote thread

OMG I ditched the middle , I shortened the start and the end , I then joined the end to the start. somehow it created a new middle …..with glitches . it will now be a chilled sprint , and I’ll roll it in glitter (post it a bit late ) and start the vote thread in the morning
