1. had an email from Jon yesterday... he's planning to spray the colour coats this week and will send me more pics...
2. "I wonder if it might have had a re fret somewhere down the decades as the quality of the fret wires is just so perfect" More likely that it was (and still is) an unplayable piece of crap - so one one did. Gotta love the break angle created by the string retainer.... I'm torn... I love the entertainment this guy provides... but it's a shame that innocent buyers can't be protected from such bollocks.
3.
my first sight of the real thing might just make up for that !
It will......
4. I'm hoping to be at Jon's on Saturday, so I'll get an update. I'm not pushing on this one...
5. Hey Angel... Welcome to Basschat! There are a number of off the shelf type places, Warmoth and Mighty Mite come to mind and a google will turn their websites up, but if you're looking for something more custom then I'd recommend having a look at the Recommended Luthiers thread above. Many will make you something to order to your specs. I'm going to recommend Jon Shuker because I'm clearly biased, but there are many fine makers in that list. HTH P
6. Yup - I have one and if will definitely find a high fret. Great little tool. Sounds like your analysis is correct and the fret might not be high across its whole width. There's a great video on YouTube somewhere showing how to level and recrown a fret with a standard file if you don't have all the gear! Edit.... Found it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c527_CtazOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
7. Gutted...... I'm in Dallas and won't be back until next week. Right on my doorstep too. There's always next year.
8. I think you're really going to really struggle without the exact diagram for that board and identifying the pin outs of the connectors, but I'd hazard a guess that the spare yellow is battery negative and red is battery positive, and the blues are for the 'hot' from the pickups (probably the centre wire of the two grey and black coax cables). The Earth from the pickups (the screen of the coaxes) probably joins a yellow. But don't blame me if you fry the board following my advice Alternatively bin the whole board and fit new pots and an Aguilar OBP 2!!! P
9. Inspired by my recent experiences, I've decided to do a few mods to a couple of basses and want to make a few scratchplates... could anyone point me in the direction of a source of large sheets of scratchplate material.. not the just about big enough sheets you can buy retail or on flea bay but big sheets I can cut down myself.... Thanks all. Pete
10.
Agree, sounds like a muting problem. Maybe post it in the technique thread too for suggestions?
Another agree... or cheat.... 11. Pics as promised... body nearly ready for spraying. Neck on it's way.
12. Oh... and I've changed the fretboard to Birds Eye Maple....
13.
" have I missed anything crucial?" It may be bit late to enquire if you are having the body 'chambered' a la Sadowsky....?
TBH I don't know! I told Jon I wanted is sub 8lb and he said no problem - so I've left the mechanics of the weight and balance to him.
14. @macdaddy - pics should be posted this weekend. I'm at Jon's on Saturday - iPhone in hand @LukeTessie - I think you're right and I agree re rushing. So far nothing has persuaded me they're not worth the wait, the quality:price ratio is astounding.
15. bump in a I forgot about this and further substantial price drop kinda way.....
16. First update I've been really relaxed about this build, mainly because I've been so effing busy at work I haven't had time to think about it... so it doesn't feel like a long wait. Anyroad up, I chose the quilt top a few weeks ago when I was over there and since then I've had a few mails with Jon and he tells me the body is complete and stained, and the neck is made up and ready for routing - but I've changed the goalposts on him a bit by changing the fretboard to BEM. I'm shall see him on the 28th so hopefully I'll take some pics. FWIW I had a long chat with Jon when I saw him the other week and I think he realises he's taken some stick about delivery times and he's actively working to reduce them. IMO whatever the delivery time, his instruments are worth it. P
17. ^ Wot he said. Welcome to the Shuker Illuminati. Personally I find gloss necks slower than satin necks, but anything Jon does with it will be perfect. I know you'll want to keep her. P
18. Just bought a Hiscox Liteflite off Nick. Sadly we didn't get to meet and shoot the breeze, but everything was as dandy as could be.
19. I'm not sure it is.... both events will give you something that you'll cherish for the rest of your life....
20.
That's gorgeous mate! I can't wait for September when my mate and I are doing our week long stint up there!!
Thanks Clarky... You will have a great time, I absolutely guarantee it!!
21. After five days, blisters, blood, swearing, laughter, lots of tea, biblical rain and a very pretty young lady in the buttie ship... I made this. Thank you to Jon and Clive (my co-coursee) for an incredible week... Unforgettable. It's testamant to Jon's skill that this is truly a professional grade instrument, built by someone that usually hacks lumps out of himself. For the record: Swamp ash body Maple neck Birdeye maple fretboard Nordstrand NPJ4SE pickups Gotoh hardware The colour was something Jon had in a bottle - it works for me. If anyone's ever thought they might like to have a bash at a build, and I mean a build from scratch, (even the scratch plate on this is 100% custom) I wholly and heartily recommend it. A great week away from the rat race.
22. Yeah Gust0o did the 121 course I think - details in other thread, and it looks amazing. I'm a complete noob at woodwork (I'll probably cut a finger off) so I'm on the basic course to see how it goes. I may go back and do a 121 if I create anything at all playable....
23. Just thought I'd bump this to see if there will be any other BCrs at Jon's on Monday?
