1. All, I'm probably going to regret parting with this, but it was bought with the intention of doing some intimate 'unplugged' gigs, but that's gone by the by and I'm doing more studio/session work and gigs are standard electric fayre (or double bass). So here it is. A Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 custom in Tobacco Burst (a 'custom' finish). All the usual Dragonfly embellishments and the quilt top make it just as purdy as can be. I imported it myself from the USA about 4 years ago (I think) - before they had distribution over here. It's in virtually mint condition having been only gigged a twice. Here's the link to MK's website for more details http://www.michaelke...nfly-5-string-1 Mine is of course the earlier version. The neck is straight and true, the frets are even and show no wear, all the hardware is in A1 condition. The electrics are 100% and come with a new Duracell battery! Currently strung with Elites phosphor bronze. Included is a Tribal Planet gig bag - the hybrid soft/hard type - which is really excellent and provides virtually hard case protection at gig-bag weight. I'd prefer a pick-up, or I'm prepared to deliver/meet up say an hour's radius of Leeds or High Wycombe, but seeing as it came all the way from Texas to me in a cardboard box, I will ship, but I'll use a reputable, insured carrier. We can chat about the cost of shipping but it's not included in the price. Latest model, new, is £579 in GAK. Sale price [s]£395[/s] [s]£375[/s] [s]£350 [/s]£300 Any questions or for more photos, please don't hesitate to ask.. Cheers Pete
2. Blimey - thanks guys... a happy wifey! Only the wax left - and I might donate that to my walking boots..... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Folks, A rushed post... it's been piled up in the bedroom, 'nuff said. Pics will follow [s]Behringer UB1024FX-pro mixer. Last used a couple of years ago. Not tested recently, but in VGC, just missing one fader knob - £20 Behringer BCR200 control surface. Known working and VGC - £20 Warwick 30308C Chrome strap locks - New - £5[/s] [s]Part used tin of Warwick Surface finisher wax - £3[/s] All plus postage at cost - I haven't worked that out yet so please ask. Cheers P
3. Glad to see your sense of humour's still intact although today's events would put any Englishman in a jolly fine mood! IME Jon does respond to a bit of polite chivvying... I'd drop him a(nother) line.
4. Dare I ask.....?
5.
Thanks guys, some promising comments there. I was thinking of ripping out the MECs in my doublebuck and having two, is that overkill?
I'd double check with Delano if it's technically possible to do. The wiring's a bit proprietary and unconventional so you'd need to be sure if that config would be possible and/or compatible with exisiting electronics. Also check dimensions...
i would stick in a new preamp with the MEC pups first....
defo an easier and cheaper option!
6.
That's interesting - I've got the Delano split coil Jazz at the neck position (Delano's take on the DiMarzio ultra jazz, I think), and that works really well. A bit fatter than a traditional Jazz.
Also interesting Simon - that's more the sound I was after, but it's given me an excuse to order another monster form Jon
Aaa Cheers Pete! Thank you for the info'! Look forward to hearing clips!
Dood - I'm informed that my evening is accounted for tonight and I'm off to High Wycombe tomorrow morning till the end of the week, so it'll be the weekend. P
7. I too have the hybrid system in one of my 5 string Shukers. No question it's a good system and very flexible which is why I chose it. I have it paired with Jon's series three preamp and the combination is capable of going from dark and thunderous to bright and sparkly with most stuff in between. There's a kind of P bass tone doable, but that not really what the system's aimed at achieving. The MM is great - love it. As Simon says fat and funky but maybe a bit politer than a true 'Ray. That suits me. The jazz is OK but it doesn't really cut it for me - I can't really get the tone I wanted, but that is a truly subjective statement. I have the alnico single coil at the neck and I do find it noisy particulaly when you blend in the J with the Ray so the top single coil is working alone. I guess it depends on your noise tolerance, but I like dead silent, which I don't get that way. That said my preferred sound is the MM with a bit of J blended in. I just make sure I'm away from any source of noise - which is not easy live. Studio more so (although it hates the fluorescent lights in my friend's studio so I have to play in the dark!). Definitely pickups of the highest quality and extremely versatile, but love them for their own merits, and not as a substitute for a pure MM or Jazz. I do have a ton of stuff recorded with it. I'm mad busy at work at the moment but I'll try and dig some examples up. P
8.
Dave Marks used to have one on his site but i keep getting a 404 error. Maybe its worth dropping him a line on here or his website.
Genius steer mate - thanks. It's on it's way!
9.
I guess you mean this epic piece?
That's the beast..... although I think he's thinking of Marcus' cover, but maybe not in it's full live glory. http://youtu.be/g8vTCp1eV8E
10. All - does anyone have a transcription of Frankenstein? Notation preferably but anything would be fabulous. It's for my Nephew's band (he's the bass player - obviously lunacy runs in the family!) who have decided to play it as a performance piece for GCSE music. TIA
11.
When the time comes stick a few piccies of the finished article, be interesting to see how these turn out.

Lucky man, I was only just emailing Jon this week about his next available courses... have a great time!
Thanks guys... I'll surely get some pics up. Clarky72 - Jon said to me he was hoping to run three courses this year so hopefully you'll get to go one one. He really does know his s***t and I'm really looking forward to learning off him.
12. Folks - I've just booked the third (last) place on Jon's build course starting June 25th. Just wondered if there was anyone else (on BC) going? Gonna add a PJ to my arsenal, assuming my novice luthiery skills produce something playable! P
13. No worries mate - I was after a decent, cheap P-Bass and this seemed to fit the bill. I'm not really a p-bass man but sometimes only that sound will do. Hope you're well? P
14. I played that blue Jazz at Jon's a while back... in fact he insited I try it. It has an unlikely combination of Kent Armstrong custom pups and an SD pre, but it's a magical mix. the noise it makes is incredible and hugely flexible. Really solid lows and and plenty of sparkly trebles if you need them - a fabulous slap tone but can go all the way to do a passable p-bass. I'd seriously recommend it if anyone's looking for a great super jazz that's a just bit different.
15. Hey Tom... have you sold this?
16. Dave just bought a Warwick Rackbag off me. Super guy, paid and happy to wait while I sunned myself!. Drove to meet me half way on Moors that looked like something out of The Hound of the Baskervilles! Cheers Dave!
17.
PMd
PM replied... and sold!
18. Now then.... I just need to get rid of some stuff that's accumulated so I'm offering my 4U Warwick RockBag for the bargain price of £15 plus shipping or collection/meet up. It's used but in very good, verging on excellent conditon and comes with some spare rack bolts and washers. I live Leeds, but work in High Wycombe and commute down on a Tuesday morning and back on a Thursday evening, so would be happy to meet anywhere en route, within 5 mins of M1/M69/A46/M40 or one of the various services. Or collection from my home in Leeds or High Wycombe, or shipping at your cost. However... I'm on holiday for two weeks from Mon, so not the best timed advert, back on Sept 12. Cash or Paypal. Cheers Pete
19.
That will be a fantastic bass.
Well if it's a nice as yours I'll be really pleased.....
20. Now then... I've wanted a Sadowky for years (about 20 actually) but the price of an NYC... eech! So, after much thought I've commissioned Jon to make me something that I'm hoping will be better than a Sadowsky I already have three of Jon's basses (one of which may well be up for sale soon!) so I know what I'm going to get quality wise and I'm completely realistic about the delivery time. I doubt there will be a quick update to this thread, but I'll add as and when. Here's the spec... have I missed anything crucial?: 5 string 34" scale 24 fret medium fretwire laminated maple neck. 3 piece maple with flamed maple core and black 0.5mm veneers between the joints two way truss rod, adjustment at heel carbon fibre reinforcement ziricote f/board abalone face dots 2mm white side dots brass nut Shuker Jazz headstock signed and dated on rear quilted head veneer headstock face sprayed to match body, gloss satin neck lacquer hipshot ultralite tuners (elephant ears) arranged 4 + 1 Swamp ash body - Shuker custom jazz body shape with deeper cut away to upper access, slightly longer top horn master grade quilted maple drop top tiger eye stain polyester basecoat tight burst to candy brown back gloss topcoat Recessed truss rod adjuster cover in quilt maple sprayed to match top Flip top battery box Plastic control cavity cover Dimarzio ultrajazz 5 pickups 70’s pickup spacing Sadowsky preamp + VTC One piece Hipshot A style or ABM bridge, brass, 18mm spacings Schaller straplocks Black hardware Here a couple of concept pics I sent to Jon. One for visuals and the other a mock up of the body shape (by me in Photoshop, badly, based on one of his existing basses)
21. Cheapest I'd ever seen a Shuker Jazz before this was a fair bit more than that - and I bought it! Complete bargain IMHO and you know that if anything's not quite to your taste/liking Jon'll be more than happy to sort it for you. Snap it up. P
22. Exotic Hardwoods UK?? TBH I know nothing about them except what a quick Google reveals, and they seem to be the company that Jon Shuker uses - and he's usually able to get hold of Buckeye. http://www.exotichardwoodsukltd.com/
23. I'm not using this... I bought it off eBay in a moment of enthusiasm, but I've never used it and it's just taking up space It's in excellent used condition. One of the zips is a little sticky, but works fine - it might benefit from a little silicone grease. Still has the original QA label attached. Comes with a bag of spare rack screws (brand new from Studiospares - £10 worth!). This has to go - so I'm asking [s]£30 [/s] £20 for it. It weighs 7kg so shipping is £12 std parcels, or collection from Leeds/meet within half an hour no issue. Best new price I can find on t'internet is £69. Any questions - ask away. Cheers P
