1.
Modern music is easily as good as what came before it. If you think otherwise then you have turned into your dad and you should pack in playing music straight away and get you pipe and slippers out.
Thought that might get a response ! Dont get me wrong there are some interesting things out there but they are so much harder to find . Anyway I dont smoke can I have some Worthers Originals instead
 2. I think its a fair question to ask , although i wouldnt limit to basses. I can offer several reasons off the top of my head A lot of the bass players here are a certain age and these players are the ones we had posters of on our bedroom walls Its easier to reference someone like Mc Cartney since everyone knows who he is - TBH I never heard of Martyn Casey ( did The Triffids do the song Chickenkiller ?) Modern music just aint as good as the stuff that went before it !!!
 3. My first gig was with a glam metal band in Camden ( Jet Black Club in Dingwalls ) only 3 things stand out I had to carry a Hartke 15 '' amp up the metal fire escape to get into the club and in the process cut my fingers The club was absolutley heaving - it probably was only 100 people but it looked like 500 We supported a gay metal band from Brighton spend the best part of an hour soundchecking and only left us 5 mins with to do the same then they blamed us for taking one of their leads and refused to let us go onstage until it was found. The actually playing and music bit was no problem although I cant remember a thing about it
 4.
The bassist, in one song, got lost so stopped playing. he then remembered where he should be. but instead of just playing from there, he played all the notes he`d missed to that point, very quickly, to catchup.
5.
So there was the rock 'n' roll and the drugs sorted. What about the sex?
Does the wife count ??
 6. thanks - just occoured to me that it was my first gig with a 5 string - cant believe I didnt even think about using a 4 er
 7.
So, did you survive?!
Yes thanks to paracetamol and ibutrofen! - although we had to hang around until the comedy club upstairs had finished before we could play which meant no sound check just straight into it . Still noone seemed to notice apart from my wife who complained afterwards that the guitarist was to loud , i had to explain to her that they're all like that
 8. Actually NMA was one of the only gigs that I walked out of . I used to follow then around yorkshire in the 80's and they were "my" band. then the next time I saw then was thie 20th anniversary show at the Astoria in London in the 90's and they just seem to have lost their edge. It was like watching a tribute band I absolutley hated it, but I suppose thats what age does to you Anyway their last studio album was very good ( much better than the Justin Sullivan solo album that came out about the same time !)
 9.
Could be partly psychosomatic because you know the gig is tonight and the nerves are kicking in a bit? Turn up, do your best and don't worry about it. They can't knock your commitment at least.
Well TBH this is only the 3rd gig in 3 years so yes probably a bit of nervous but what with almost being sacked last week, the car breaking down and my missus's business failing this gig is pretty low on my list of priorities Of course I'm going to play , its only bass so noone wlll notice if I make any mistakes and then I'm sure I'll get sacked new week because they didnt like the jumper I was wearing !!!
 10. I lo
I can't access the webpage at work. Can you share any more info about this opportunity or what it says on the link above?
THANK YOU NELSON We are very sad to announce that, for family and personal reasons, Nelson is leaving us after twenty-two years and countless wonderful performances. We'd like to thank him for his great contribution to the band for so long and we will miss his easy-going personality and great musical skill. Read more... THE SEARCH BEGINS Despite opinions to the contrary, we have not already chosen our next bass player. Although the band have known for some time about Nelson's intentions, we have not until now seriously addressed finding a replacement. It goes without saying that the very first requirement will be considerable technical ability. All serious suggestions and applications should be made to "][email protected] Good luck with the audition
 11. Tonight I have my first gig ( and probably only !!) gig of the year and I've come down with the worst illness I've had in years - sort of cold/chest infection/ dizzyness thing. TBH I practiced last night and struggled to hit the right notes as my fingers feel heavy - do you think I should play tonight ( and probably get sacked because of my playing ) or cancel ( and get sacked because of my commitment ) what a dilema !
 12. I think its a bit sad having contempt for anyones musical taste irrespective of whether they are in an audience a band or whatever , thats the sort of stuff I grew out of when I was 14
 13. I was listening to a Gong compliation on Spotify last night which had some soft Machine interviews and some poetry reading as well - worth a listen
 14.
In case you all think I look like a large cock, here's what I actually look like. You may of course still think I look like a large cock ...
Of course you dont look like a large cock ! BTW good luck with your re election campaign for London Mayor
 15. This week I've been listening to : Little Johny England Leatherat The Demon Barbers Unfortunatly I cant find anything on most of the live You tube clips sound really rough !
 16.
If its a younger age group in the pubs the oldies are left out, a more mature audience and the Beatles and Tina Turner etc are wheeled out.
This TBH its only a set list with 20 odd songs on it and most of them look pretty basic ( well to play at the pub cover level ) if you rehearse regularly and your up to standard then it shouldnt take too long to get thee numbers down so you can add another 20 onto the set quickly enough and as Jambo says make the set list fit the audience. The other good thing about this is that it means your not going over the same songs at evert rehearsal. One more tip get the lyrics and the chords printed out and give everyone a copy of that ( they should be easy enough to get from the internet) it makes the whole learning thing a lot easier
 17. Roots was the song that got me into SOH it reminds me of New Model Army .I've been exploring a lot of folk music recently ( well as much as spotify will allow me to ) and I'm quite suprised how much modern folk I'm finding that I like. I'll post a few links tonght if I can remember and if anyone is interested
 18.

Got me doubts about anything by brian adams as well, although I used to like playin run to you when it was new. Just my 2 pennworth though.

TBH summer of 69 always seemed to go down well and its easy to play The rest of the list is OK although it is diverse - how are you getting on playing Black Night? I used to play it years ago and I always seem to remember struggling with it
 19. Cheers for that sounds the safest option - stupid question but what sandpaper would I use ?

 22.
possibly interested, whats the current price? Would you post?
The price is still £ 100 , I dont think the rules allow me to turn it into an auction I can post it or I could meet in London ( perhaos Liverpool st) pm me if your interested
 23. Just bought a bass second hand and its all good except the neck has a small ding in it behind the 3rd fret - about 5 mm long and 1 mm deep , so really its like a little indentation. It doesnt affect the playablility but I can feel it each time I play and in an ideal world I'd like it repaired but not having the money to do that either I repair it myself or I leave it. So I'm wondering how easy is it to repair, I was thinking either using a soldering iron and damp cloth to steam it out or using varnish to fill the dent and then sand that down till smooth.any Anyone got any ideas which method is better ? Cheers
 24.
Ta. I'm now imagining people in a studio all glaring at each other while playing their instruments absolutely perfectly because they all know if they make one mistake it'll turn into a fist fight.
I can imagine that being a typical King Crimson rehearsal
