90% of the audience thinks it's a funny big guitar anyway.
I was at a gig with Mrs Thunderbird last week and half way through she asked me why the guy with the big acoustic guitar was playing it upside down.I had to explain to her slowly that it was a double bass.

South East Bass Bash Year 4, Surrey, 27th November 2010
thunderbird13 replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
I might be able to make it - but it is a bit of a trek - would it be OK if I turned up without any gear. TBH most of mines rubbish anyway so I couldnt see why anyone would be interested in it ! -
I did that a couple of years ago! It really changes your approach and it is very refreshing.
I tired to write a thread about this a while ago but no one wanted to play ! The one thing I have found is that it you use a different instrument ,( bass, guitar keyboard whatever ) as your starting point then it has a massive result on the end result. So I suppose if you know what sound you want you would go to that instrument first Unfortunately everything I write on bass ends up sounding like The Cure , I hate The Cure
What it says on the tin really. Verses, choruses, middle 8's
Dont forget intros , outros and 20 minute long drum solos - ermm perhaps I should stop listening to so much Rush ! Good on you for starting this - hope I have something meaningful to contribute !

Good luck with the gig sorry buts its too late for me - Dont forget to remind us when your next gig is I'll try to make that one -
Its funny with these arguments that they seem to come down to a theory is good/bad discussion with the ear only purists “ implying “ that it is their own internal creativity which has taken them to where they are today ( its normally a good place). On the other hand the reading only purists “ imply “ that the ear only sect are lazy and holding themselves and others back, To them reading is seen as a gateway to a larger , perhaps more professional world where well educated musicians can converse with each other on the same level via reading and a discussion of theory. It is in itself an echo of the Barbarian Vs Civilised arguments of ancient Rome, one using logic and reason to impose order on their world whilst the other tries to harness the powers of nature for their own ends - and of course both sides of the arguments contain half-truths. The way I see reading music (not sight reading which is a different skill) is of value to everyone as it allows you to read music books and magazines without listening to the CD first, you can see the rhythm visually and this helps fix it in your mind and teaches you to count bars properly. To the average player that’s it, no pit gigs, no playing dep gigs on the fly, no session work - that’s for players who are GOOD (and will have learnt how to read anyway). But the benefits of reading for the average player are still pretty useful and its ONLY BASS you have to learn – single notes written on one staff ! Try learning piano or guitar and see how hard chords can be to read. Compared to that bass isn’t hard and I think anyone with average intelligence could learn the basics it in a week using one hour an evening – I certainly did and believe me I am nothing more than a very very average player.

There's a free version available, but with limited tunings and stuff.
actually the free version doesnt look too bad - all chords in standard tuning isnt a bad thing to have !

looking at some of the posts regarding learning names of notes I thought this little app for android phones may help ,its free anyway muso I forgot to mention that the screenshots show guitar but there is a bass version as well , only 4 strings though

I get what your saying - I much prefer playing with 2 guitars as it does give the music more texture and that gives me more freedom since things seem more "in place "

I want one !!!!!!!

Actually I'm too posh to live in a Housing Estate - I'd have to live in a Fortress in Warwick - shire ., as long as it had a nice Vintage point
That's the whole point - to me he's a 20x20 pixel Sid James! J.
Funny I always hear sid James when I see this one !

FWIW I never liked brow - he always reminded me of that annoying Monty Python sketch -nudge nudge wink wink !

As mentioned earlier I’m beginning to get into song writing and although what I produce probably isn’t very good it is something which is surprising rewarding (for me anyway !). I am going to have a lot of really stupid questions over the next few months so bear with me ! My objective is produce a bunch of rough demos of completed songs so that I can get a band together to finalise them and then gig. To begin with I’ve noticed that there are some books on song writing and I’ve also seen courses on it is it something that can be taught? I suppose like most people I come up with a riff and then play around with it until something else fits- is there a more methodical way of doing it? Also I’m curious as to what instruments other people here use to compose with and do you think it has an outcome on the end result. I find if I write something on bass it is more “direct” whereas on guitar its more “ strummy “ ( that probably doesn’t make sense – and I don’t think strummy isn’t even a word ). I've also inherited a keyboard and wonder if its worthwhile investing time in that

Oh no not again ................
thunderbird13 replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
yeah starting my own band is probably the way forward - I 'm begining to write stuff on guitar now as well. Expect to see lots of songwriting orientated threads soon -
Well I havent really been sacked but received an email from the drummer ( via the gutarist) saying that he's not happy with rehearsals and the way the band is going. So thats that band finished. Right that only leaves me with the covers band that rehearses once a every 2 months Is this some sort of record - and what do I win ????????????

How long is the bass in your hands each day?
thunderbird13 replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Probably about 30 mins a day - unless I'm trying to record something then it all day with the bass in one hand and mucking about on Cuebase on the other -
I quit the band today
First of all, guitarman b starts having digs at the singer at times in certain songs. (not aggressive, just alittle too sarcastic)............. I got shouted at by guitarman a , because I found it hard going learning what I'd call a difficult song. I knew about 80% and he goes in a strop.
Sounds like both guitarists have an ego problem. Well done on you for having the courage to walk out of what sounds like a toxic situation -
Cool, got an apology, feedback on the baseline (nearly all good now they're written) and it was the best practice to date. Phew!
AARRRRGGHHHH BASSLINE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS good news about the band sounds like the drummer just overreacted
-
For some reason the car radio will only pick up radio 2 which isnt a problem with the exception of sunday afternnoons when Elaine Page has a show on playing "show tunes " . Most of the well known songs are OK but the other ones are usually awful and obviously filler.
Turns out the drummer didn't like my basslines and instead of discussing it with the band decided to advertise for a bassist... Still going along tonight to discuss face to face (last practice I was experimenting and trying to write basslines aswell as being short of a guitarist) and hopefully re-install his faith in me. Fingers X'd... It has NOT been a good day!
Good luck tonight - might be an idea to give the drummer a chance to explain why he did it . If he doesnt then he's probably not worth bothering with

Apply for it using a different email , or get someone else to do it and see what happens.

thanks - for the recomendations - Now DAW software is a whole different kettle of fish I have Cube base LE which came with my zoom and its OK for the basics but TBH I find it too complicated to do anything fancy with. I'll probably have to spend some time in you tube looking at tutorials although in truth I'd rather just plug in and play than much about with software !
-
thanks for that - looking at it I might as spend a little more and buy something like a Zoom G2.1u for £ 100 new which will act as an interface and give me loads of effects as well
-
thanks for that - I'd like to know why the ebay one is so much cheaper. TBH I'm a bit suspicious of a lot of these products I've got a Zoom B1 U at home which I use to record bass with but it does seem to work with guitar that I have so I imagine I need something to boost the guitar signal
