1.
Time to get out of bed then?
must be half asleep - and I've been at work for 2 hours !!!
 2. Its funny how frequently these posts appear and I have been guilty of making them in the past .The way it works is that everyone gives the standard advice which is take a break, keep your most important gear, sell the rest and come back to it when you want to ,that’s sensible advice. Without knowing you there’s not much else to add except that when I’ve been in your situation I also feel a bit of quilt or anger that I’ve invested so much money and time in something only to stop it which when you think about it is silly as its supposed to be fun and if its not fun then do something which is !
 3.
Is it possible for you to string a bunch of famous bass lines interspersed with various bass licks of your own? Sunshine of your love - Money - Taxman/Start - The Chain - Come together - Walk on the wildside... etc. That might be a lot more interesting for you and the listener rather than listen to the whole of a song and tbh the bassline to many rock songs is so nondescript that the listener would struggle to recognise it.
now thats a great idea
 4.
Not too sure on your level of playing,
Lets just say not very good Cheers for the suggestions though
 5. Chaps and Chapesses - following Sarah’s and Linus’ threads regarding their respective band problems got me thinking as I find myself in the same boat ( i.e. bandless) To that end I have decided to put myself “out there “ and record myself playing some songs for my Myspace page which I could then send as a link to people. The question is what songs to record ? Ideally they should be ; 1/ Iin a rock style , 2/ Last about 3 or 4 minutes 3/ Be interesting enough so that people will listen to them 4/ Be bass orientated enough so that I’m not just playing root notes and potential bands can gauge my playing 5 / Be easy enough for someone as cackhanded as me to play and sound good Obviously number 5 is he most important Anyway I was considering My Generation but apart from the solo the bass doesn’t do much – any other suggestions?? Cheers
 6. cursed - absolutely not its just the way bands are
 7.
I think the playing has provided a real distraction; and, for many us, it's just what's needed from our work/careers, etc. I used to play a lot of rugby before my accident, and it was great. You could take your week and dump it into the game, and come out a different person. It was something to do, something else to hang your hat on.
This is the thing that keeps me coming back - although TBH most of the time I wish there was something else
 8.
I always think there must be something wrong if you can't pick up the vast majority of lines by ear...particuarly in 'pop' music. so am often bemused by requests for tab for the more simpler songs.
I've often struggled to work out simple 'pop' lines so I've used tab - perhaps I should just give up
 9. Ahh bands – no comment personally I’d rather have haemorrhoids than go through the email/ phone call/ audition process only to find yourself in a room with 4 idiots who all think their so gifted that they don’t need to listen to each other to play music
I also dep for a U2 tribute band when the full time bassist can't make gigs.
Just out of curiosity is your Bono as big a nob as the real one
I'm a bit like you - I think I'd rather retire than spend my middle age doing cover bands.
Never really got the hostility towards doing covers if your playing music that you enjoy whats the problem - at least your out their playing with other people - perhaps its because I’m not creative More seriously I really don’t see the point in voicing an opinion as to whether you should pack it in only you know your circumstance But I do remember you posting before about not being happy with your job and feeling run down – do you think these things are connected ? perhaps its stress which is making the already difficult job of finding decent people to play music with seem that much harder – just a thought
 10.
There's also Siggery if you like the Sadowsky vibe, or McIntyre (ex-Gallery so had a hand in a few Sei basses too).
Chris McIntyre actually spent 12 years making Sei bases .He's the only luther I've been to so its hard to compare but I was very impressed with his work and his general down to earth attitute
 11.
Here's a go at Tempus Fugit by Yes. A few mistakes here and there. I recorded it yesterday while waiting for mrs silddx to get ready before going to the Fat Duck with some friends, more of which later ..
Good stuff mate, rock solid timing - but its a bit of a shock to see you without a hat
 12. nice one - thanks
 13. Clarky , have you thought about this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cherry-Lane-Music-...mp;sr=8-1-fkmr1 I thought it was quite good - but it is basic and the examples are short
 14.
"should I stay in my bedroom as opposed to doing covers with folk who have delusions of grandeur and aren't actually that good."
Haha - I know exactly what you mean. The only problem with that attitude is that I'd end up just playing in my bedroom which would mean that I'd get bored and give up bass
 15.
It's not as if you're being recruited by a Sun Ra tribute band.
Now thats an idea !! Perhaps you could give us a support lot
 16. I’ve been asked to have a jam with a guitarist who wants to do blues and blues rock stuff. In my opinion anything which gets me out and playing with other people is postive ( as long as its fun). But its not really my thing – I don’t mind blues but I’d never listen to it at home .It got me thinking would you play music that your not really bothered about , I don’t mean hate obviously , but just not that fussed about or would you hold out for something that you love and risk sitting in your bedroom for months on end until that comes along ?
 17. I dont like SC. The Les Paul is acceptable but I just dont see why they make the body has to come so far up on the Warwick - yuck
 18. Ah bands What your experiencing appears to be a very common problem - its certainly happened to me a lot. Amazing what we do for something which is supposed to be fun !
 19. would you not be better off using Guitar pro which allows you to hide the tab and just look at notation. I think my version cost 30 quid
 20.
Neither have you. Try it for 15 mins a day for the next month then tell me I'm talking sh*te. BTW I've been playing bass for 35 years but I was nearly 40 before I sung a note. I'm not 'gifted' at it , my voice is a bit boring and I don't pitch well naturally BUT , I practised , I learned , I got confident and I'd get on a stage with anybody and not feel second best - more to the point I'd get the job done.
dont want to derail this thread but singing is something I would like to do as most people seem to expect a basisst to do BV. Do you follow a course either book or online or just sing along to what your listening to at the time ?
 21.
Here's another nomination for the fugly brigade
If you listen very carefully you can just hear it whisper " please kill me "
 22.
I just could never pick out what line the dot was on or between, suppose the best way to describe it is the dots jump about. I used to know which was which note (can't now) but if you sat it down infront of me I would have had to sit and go through it note by note. I suppose these days I'd be taken to the docs or the optician and diagnosed with some sort of syndrome but back then I was just told I would never be able to play an instrument.
I get that as well sometimes and when I went to the optician he said that Celts are genetically prone to this condition - couldnt cure it though

 25.
You'd have to be in denial or just being a t*at and winding people up to say reading music isn't a good thing.
Hope that wasnt aimed at me All I was saying is that for someone like me all I need is to learn a whole load of songs and tabs are the easiest way of dong that. I wish sheet music was more readily available for the pub standards that I play but all I can find on the internet to buy is sheet music for guitar. So either I spend weeks learning something by ear or get tab and learn it in an evening, making the corrections as I go. Of course if your a pro or ,like Bilbo , playing with other dot readers then reading is important and yes I wish my ear was better and I didnt have to rely upon either reading or tab !
