I dont like my band - standard rant number 202
thunderbird13 replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
Well I looked at all the advice here and took decided that I all I wanted to do was play Hawkwind and I wasnt that fussed about playing original material. So last night I met up with the guitarist to tell him this. However I wasn’t quite prepared for his reaction. From what I can remember the conversation went something like Me - I’m sorry mate but I’m just not into the stuff your doing now and all I really want is to play Hawkwind Him – I see where your coming from but I cant play anymore Hawkwind as we already play it Me – eh ? Him – well we have another bass player who we play with and we gig Hawkwind stuff with him instead Me – So what was I in the band for Him – well the other bassist and the drummer argue a lot so it’s better to keep them apart when we rehearse ! So it was all bit smoke and mirrors and I wasn’t even in the band I thought I was in all along -
How the hell do some people treat their basses?!
, I make assumptions they treat people and animals like that too. Is it me being very judgemental as usual? or do I have a point?
Its a fair cop - all the dings on my thunderbird have been caused by bear baiting and cock fighting -
I cant believe 3 already people bid on this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hand-Made-Mahogany-B...3DLVI%26ps%3D54
Alistair, you fancy getting a Hillage tribute together? We could do the whole of Live Herald. I reckon there's a market, don't you? It would have to be the start of next year due to me being really busy this year with my non-musical education schedule, but we can learn stuff in the mean time. I can play guitar like Hillage, hell, I grew up playing Hillage numbers, but I'd have to relearn them. I can sing like Hillage and I reckon, if I get the curlers out and wear a tea cosy on me head, I can look like Hillage, I certainly have his teeth I can certainly sort out an ace drummer and probably a mini-Miquette on keys. I can swap my Squier Tele for a Steinberger. We could do a band build diary on here What d'ya reckon? I'm serious mate.
I d be up for it but do you honestly think there would be a market for it ? I'll have a chat with you about that later -

thanks for the replies TBH I didnt think that anyone would reply as I get a bit bored reading these types of threads. Still just for the record we're a trio and as far as I'm aware the drummer is keen to do original stuff as well. In addition to this is the complication thats its a social thing as well and we go to gigs and have beers together. I suppose I'll stick it out and look for something else in the meantime -
Sorry guys just want to get this off my chest – it supposed to be therapeutic Rant mode on - Been playing in a Hawkwind tribute band for about 9 months now at the start it was hard to remember all the bass parts but I put the work in and got up to a reasonable standard enough to play my first gig with then in December. Now my band leader has announced that he’s changing direction and writing all his own stuff, including the bass lines which he wants me to play without any additional input from me. OK I thought I have to be realistic I’m not that good and after a year of playing I don’t think I have improved much so I’m pretty much stuck at a level somewhere rank beginner and average. So why not just accept it learn his stuff and get on with it – at least I’m still in a band. But it’s beginning to get me down – his new stuff isn’t that good and frankly I’m getting bored playing it and I have some resentment to not being allowed to change it to make it more interesting. Try as hard as I can I just cant get excited about it I have enquired about 2 more bands that have advertised for a bass player recently but after 2 or 3 emails both of them have gone quiet, which is similar to the experience I have this time last year. It took me about a year to find a band and now it looks like its going to be the same again. TBH I really don’t know if I can be bothered with it anymore. Rant mode off - Thank you for your time - now about your business

Excellent - I can see a whole new business opening up

hmmmm - wonder if its just a truss rod adjustment
Which Genesis track (never heard of 15/16) - its about breaking it down to manageable chunks. 7/4 can be a 3 and a 4 or a 4 and a 3. 5/4 can be a 4 and a 1, a 3 and a 2 of a 2 and a 3. I would expect 15/16 to be 3 4s and a 3. To be horrible blunt. if its Genesis, its unlikely to be that complicated. They tend to think in one bar patterns and don't cross bar lines much.
The track is The Firth of Fifth , the instrumental bit after the flute solo .I did get the tab off guitar pro so it may be suspect ,although to me it sounds accurate. I agree that Genesis aren’t that complicated but for a player of my standard it is a challenge. Still even if its not totally accurate I’d like to play it as it’s written as its good practice in time signatures which is something I'm weak on

If it was a bolt on I'd feel more confident as it may be easier to fix - pity these dont seem to come up that often

I understand the basics of time signatures but I was trying to play some Genesis last night and it went something like one bar in 4/4 one in 2/4 one in 15/16 and one in 7/8 before repeating itself. Is it the only way to play this one bar at a time or is there an easy way of counting the bars ands what’s the best way of counting 15/16 . Sorry if this is a stupid question
I do agree with this, in my original post I meant that if you like Tbirds it doesn't matter what design flaws they are said to have, you still love them and play them. I also play with my right hand resting on the body, it cures the neck dive without having to move the strap button.
? I was told that you shouldnt rest any of your arm on the guitar as it can aggrivate the wrist and cause injuries - is that not true ?

Surely the correct response would be " I'm glad you saw my new bass it was lent to me by ( insert name of friend here) . He bought it without telling his wife and is how scared of what her reaction might be, so I offered to look after it for him until he has it sorted it out with her . Honestly some people are so dishonest in their relationship. I'm glad we're not like that and I can tell you everything " Then slither away and wait for the guilt to wear off

Best time to announce leaving a band...
thunderbird13 replied to Stylon Pilson's topic in General Discussion
I cant really voice an opinion as I dont know the relationships you have with the rest of the band members ,but it says a lot about you that you care enough about the rest of them to at least think of the best way of handling it rather than just p*ssing off without saying anything which happens too often nowdays -
What are you listening to right now?

Korean Guitar Workers Take Struggle to USA
thunderbird13 replied to MIJ-VI's topic in General Discussion
I saw something like this last year and I'm still a bit mystified by it - OK Cort closed their Korean factory and didnt pay full wages so I imagine the workers are due a months salary. The stuff about inhumane conditions is not relevant if the factory is closed and their not going to work there anymore .Its bad and I would be pissed off by it but I dont get why its such a crime and what is the point of the protest its not as if Cort are going to reopen its factory there -
+1 to everything above - something always turns up eventually. Take this time as a break to focus on what you want . You say there are no bands around which are suitable but suitable in what way - type of music played, personality, ambition or on ability ?
That's a Korean-made "Rocknroller"!
