If I put on my accountants hat I would say that there is also a tax issue as well as you may be liable for Capital Gains tax depending on your circumstances God I 'm talking about tax on a Friday night - I'm off to share a bottle of wine with Mrs Thunderbird

lol - thats cool we only do space ritual - now if it were Organ Accumulator (complete with bass solo ) there would be a fight !!!
-
Good idea - my lot might be up for it and we're ( sort of ) based in West London . Any love for a Hawkwind tribute band with a few orginals as well ?
-
thanks guys - and yes I did read on another forum about waiting a couple of days between 1/4 turns on the truss

Put me down as a convert - I used to hate bass effects but I bought a Zoom B2 and its becoming more and more useful to me - played wah wah bass in the middle of a song last rehearsal and the rest of the band freaked out
What kicked of the original post from me was some of the stuff thats happened over the last year. Band 1, I answer an ad on a musicians wanted forum. Go for audition, get offered the job, after 3 rehearsals and after learning about 30 tunes, the husband and wife guitard and singer say they can't commit because of work commitments. Why they didn't think of this before is beyond me. The band actually sounded very good. Band 2, Answer ad, get the gig, turn up for first rehearsal after being given 2 weeks to learn the tunes, the guitard as learnt sod all and is useless. I tell them I'm also in a Wishbone Ash tribute. During a break the vocalist asks me if we need a singer for the Ash tribute as he is "sick of this lot" this is during my first rehearsal with them. Alarm bells ring. Two days later the guitarist phones to tell me the band folded. His daughter is keyboard player in the band and they don't get on when in the band together he says and he's had enough. Band 3, The ash tribute folds after 6 months of reheasal learning some very tough bass lines because one of the guitards can't commit. again the band sounds excellent. Band 4, Guitarist packs up because we want to sack his mate who is the other guitard and can't play a note, he was seriously crap. Another 3 months wasted. Add to this all the ads that I've answered and the cretins can't even be bothered to phone back, I'm a bit frustrated to say the least. Oh and I forgot about the band that would not let me rejoin because my bass was too loud, wait for it....once !
thats rough but at least your passed the auditions - I went 12 months and had 4 failed auditions ( with no real feedback why ) before I joined my current band

I've noticed a few posts about changing the truss rod tension if you change the guage of strings. I changed mine from medium to light last month and didnt even think adjusting the truss. As long as it plays Ok then I've assumed that the neck tension is correct but now I'm concerned that I might be doing long term damage to the neck. Should you change the tension as a matter of course or should I change it only when it becomes an obvious problem tbh I'd rather not muck about with these things
Avoid saying anything more than you need to - you can do a staggering amount of damage with a casual, throwaway comment.
Thats so easy to forget

completely agree with you - I'd say about 90% of bands that I have dealt with fall into this category and from what I've read in this forum I'm not the only one. What I'd be curious to find out is whether players of other instruments get messed about the same way or is it a bass thing ??

I think they should be done under the trades description act as they sell a lot more than fridges... I had to think about that one for a minute !

What's your greatest moment in music?
Thanks for all the contributions everyone (finally got around to reading my own thread!) So many amazing and touching stories. I feel a bit sad to say that I have never had a 'greatest moment in music'. It's the one single area of my life where I feel like a total loser Oh well, life's been good to me otherwise so I shouldn't complain.
dont feel to bad about it .I dont have a greatest moment either - in fact the only thing that keeps me playing in bands is a profund sense of masochism -
Going onstage at Vienna Stadthalle (in full 'Gene Simmons' garb) with my friends in the opening local band (on a 3 band bill with Motorhead & Dio) and having the whole arena believe I really was Gene....lol!.... then going backstage and being *ahem* 'noshed off' by a beautiful lady in my dressing room
-
Just to be contrary I'd say stick with it for a while for the following reasons You say its difficult getting into bands where you live but the only way you can really learn and progress is by playing with other people so if you tell this drummer where to go now chances are you could be playing in your bedroom for the foreseeable future which after a while can get really boring In an ideal world you would go for a beer with the drummer and have a chat about it but I suppose you would have already done this if it were practical.Stick with it for the time being and make some recordings of you playing with this drummer so that if it still doesnt work out you can look around and email some MP3 s to give potential bands an idea of what you can play if the oppurtunity arises TBH nothing I hear about the way people are treated in bands suprises me in my limited experience I just take it as read that I will be lied to and undervalued so I just use it as a learning curve Hope this helps

Does anyone else play a lot of open strings?
I actually have a bit of a phobia of open strings. I will avoid them whenever I can and do ridiiculous stretches that my small hands can barely cope with.
I do the same thing - I have a tendancy to hammer the open strings too hard which is OK if I'm only playing open strings but sounds strange if I'm playing fretted notes -

Another "my band are a bunch of idiots" threads
What if everyone above learned second instruments and formed your own band? What if we did a thread of Basschatters who play second instruments AND are looking for a band?
Actually I dont think thats such a bad idea. I was actually going to suggest something similiar although I was thinking about people who wanted to practice as I know there are quite a few people here who play guitar who may want the oppurtunity to practise in a non pressured way Mind you it might end up with everyone arguing as everyone would want to be the bass player - now that would be a first !!! -
Ed Freidland 's books are always useful and give a good grounding in theory without being overpowering. I would recomend Building walking bass lines or Bass improvisation

The correct way to interact with the audience as demonstrated by Tye Zamora http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cJB2Z_aTEQ Also a timely reminder of how good Micheal Jackson once was ( before all the hype/flac about the new film ruins it )

Interesting one this as I casually asked Mrs Thunderbird about this last night what she thought I expected her to trot out the usual stuff about compromise and balancing individual time and together time .But instead she said it was pathetic that someone would risk a relationship just for the sake of a hobby. I didnt persue it further but I've a feeling that there is a timebomb ticking !
