That's what my suggestion would be. I went from playing in a band (of wasters, sadly) which split up. With nothing on the cards, I ended up not playing for about six years. Now, I'm having a very hard time finding other people (who aren't teenagers) or bands to join. I'm making music on my computer to pass the time.
Same thing happened to me , although I stopped playing for almost 10 years . I'm lucky, after a year of constant looking and lots of failed auditions I'm back playing in a tribute band and I'm really enjoying it . I suppose its a bit like work - the longer you are out of it the harder it is to get back
some pretty good places in Belfast, especially Matchetts. Thy put up with me bothering them about info on lefty Strats and things for years before I finally could afford my US Std new in there, back in 94.... after that, I bought pretty much everything in there - still do pick up bits from them when I'm in town. good folks.
I remember Matchetts I used to go in there a lot when I was signing on in Belfast and they would let me play anything, although I really cant remember ever buying anything there ! The worst service I got in Belfast was the music shop near the Central Library( I cant remember what they were called ) I enquired about a hard case for a double bass to which the owner replied that they dont make them. When I questioned him about this he came screaming from behind the counter repeatedly shouting " well you tell me where I can buy them ". Didnt buy anything there either -

One tip that was given to me was to group the song parts into bigger bits . So if there is a section with a riff in D that lasts 16 bars I'll play an A every 4th bar and then write down 4 A's to remind me. Also I've found for me just going over the songs again and again will only work up to a point. I remember reading something about there being a optimum number of times to do a repeated action to commit it to memory and repeating that action after that point actually reduces your ability to remember it , but of course I cant rememebr where I read that ! -
And singers who are clearly not American singing with an American accent (or strange hybrids thereof).
Yeah the transatlantic twang is certainly annoying although in fairness it was explained to me that if you are british its better to sing as if you had an American accent as they move their mouths more when they speak and this helps the singing voice . If that makes sense
I've just discovered this thread & was really surprised that Rickenbackers haven't had as much of a slagging as they have. It's not that their basses are bad (although it's definitely a Marmite love/hate thing), it's difficult to understand whether they are good enough to justify the price. A standard build 4003 currently retails for around £1,699 & there's a waiting list of up to 12 months to get one if you can't find a shop that hasn't coincidentally ordered the one you want on spec a year in advance. I just don't get it... On the other hand, if you try to sell something vaguely resembling a Rick on eBay they'll be on to you faster than a burning whippet - they need to spend less time on the internet protecting their patents & more time on the factory floor doing some graft if you ask me! B.
+1 I'm building up a healthy dislike of Ricks after looking for one for under a grand for over a year. There is just no way I would consider spending more than that on a bass especially when you consider what else you can get for that money. Just a pity that I'm playing Lemmy basslines though !!!

Your not the only one struggling with this, at the moment I have to sing some sections in the songs we are playing and I always seem to screw up the bass line as soon as I open my mouth. At the moment I'm trying to solve this by playing the bass lines as normal but speaking the lyrics rather than singing , in this way I'm trying to teach my brain to do 2 things at one time. Something which my wife keeps reminding me men are incapable of doing !

This may be a stupid question but apart from the low B what is the benefit of playing a 5 string ? Do you play more across the strings rather than up and dowm the fretboard ? I have been told that when I play I tend to overstretch with my fretting hand i.e. i tend to stretch my little finger down the fretboard rather than across to get to the same note and this tends to slow me down .I'm wondering if this would help stop me do this

Is there something wrong with me?
thunderbird13 replied to EdwardHimself's topic in General Discussion
hi guys i've asked to be in so many bands over the years and i wouldn't have minded not getting in if they'd at least heard me but not one of them has even asked me to go down for an audition. The last time (and only time) i even went to an audition was in 2006. So, is there something wrong with me?
From what your saying it sounds like people are casually asking you to be in a band with them but then not following through either it some signal your giving out which puts them off or more likely your not being proactive enough. If it happens again try to make a definate date for a jam and see how that goes. But please dont make the mistake that I made and join the first band that will have you take some perspective and see if its right for you because if its not it can be really demotivating
Hell of a lot of time wasters up here in the North East mate.
unfortuntately their not limited to the North East -
Back on topic. I've learnt from employing at work that people can get better but they very rarely get nicer.

. One thing I heard once that I liked is you don't want a top bloke who can't play
and therein lies the problem based on my experience you have to follow these rules : When you advertise make out as if you’re the next big thing and the phrase “ Major label interest “ must be used in the advert. Give then a choice of 2 songs to learn out of a possible 4 ( but don’t forget to look disappointed when they only bothered learning 2 and not the whole lot ). Just to test them try changing the key or use different drum riff from the recording Tell them they can make the guitar parts they’re own although of course you know that any changes are not going to be as good as the original and should be treated with contempt Give each auditonee a 30 minute slot with no feedback at all , if possible try to get each slot to overlap so they have a chance to meet each other on the way out. Wait a week and tell anyone who auditioned that they were alright but their guitar looked a bit strange and they didn’t quite fit in Repeat process until you get bored and move onto a new band
I have a really crappy portable CD player, it has virtually no bass response at all. But that's great because once I've learnt the song I can use that to play along with and you're not competing against the existing bass line - bass karaoke if you like.
Thats a good idea As for repeated listening I have been doing that but I'm at the stage where I 'm sick of hearing them now - prob my mind telling me to take a break for a while !
Not a gig but when practicing at home in my teens I used to sit on my bed with the headstock of my bass against a big wooden headboard that I used as a sound-board. Sounded pretty good but was rather uncomfortable.
I used to do this as well but against my wardrobe - probably the biggest rig I've used in terms of height ! On topic I played the Dublin Castle a couple of times with a Hartke kickback 15 watt which seemed to do the trick and I carried it on the tube on a little trolley

I agree with writing them down its just that whenever I play the songs I'm feel that I'm playing very mechanically and trying to anticipate the next change by thinking too much about it rather than grooving. I suppose its just a matter of jamming it through and getting comfortable with the material which is quite complicated. Just seems to take me ages to get to that stage !!! As far as the Tascam CD-BT is concerned I have tried Windows Media Player which will slow songs down up to 50 % although I dont really find that useful , does the Tascam do it differently that WMP ?

Hi, I've just jointed a new band and although most of the songs are straightforward rock they are all around the 7 minute mark with lots of different parts to each song. At the moment I'm learning them just by counting the various bits out loud e.g. 6 on the E riff followed by 8 on the A riff then 2 on the D riff and then playing them at home over and over again until they become second nature then I can worry about feel and putting fills in. This is taking me ages to learn and I wondered if anyone has come across an easier method to learn structures

Have been around the forum for about 7 or 8 months now so it’s about time I said hello. If anyone is interested here’s my story (I wont blame you if you skip this bit) : I’ve done the usual thing of playing in mates bands in my 20 ‘s and early 30’s then got frustrated by lack of commitment/ petty band politics/ lack of direction. I then decided that if I wanted to play bass I should take it very seriously so I got a teacher and learnt a lot of theory and different styles, practiced almost all my spare time and generally became a bit of a bass bore. After 2 years of this, and only playing in my bedroom, I just got bored with everything and sold all my gear and basically gave up listening to music. Now in my 40’s I have suddenly found the passion again for music , mainly whats now called classic rock I got some cheap gear and after some rubbish auditions I have managed to get into a tribute band .Its early days yet and I don’t want to say too much in case I screw it up but if it comes together it should be interesting (well if you like 70’s space rock anyway). In terms of gear I don’t have anything special an Epiphone Thunderbird, a Cort C4 ( I think , the guy who sold had acquired a load of bankrupt stock and didn’t really know what it was ) a bog standard Trace Elliot combo and a new Zoom B2.1U Erm that’s all !!!! Cheers Alistair

The only time that a band I was in that ever built up a following was about 10 years ago and then it was only 2 guys who turned up to boo the guitarist all night !
My main concern right now is finding another band of the same/better caliber asap, but that seems nigh on impossible right now. What to do?
Its not impossible but it might take time to get the right band and not just end playing with a lot of talentless arseholes for the sake of it . I might also suggest getting a few lessons if your not doing so already. I'm not suggesting that there's anything wrong with your playing but I'm assuming your confidence has been knocked ( mine was when I was sacked , although I knew it was coming ! ) and a good teacher will be able to give you an objective assessment of your playing
Cheats are to watch the bass drum pedal or front skin if you can't hear it. or to stand just in front of the kit and put your foot against the spike of the bass drum and feel what he's doing.
damn didnt think anyone else used my trick . TBH I find it really difficult to hear the bass drum and listening to the hi hat can be confusing so thats my only strategy.
