Alternatively you could buy a fretted double bass http://www.gbase.com...pright-d-1935-b
err no thanks
To th OP, I'd suggest limiting markers to those positions where you seem to be having the most intonation problems and giving yourself a time limit for removing them.
Actually its a Stagg EUB so it does have markers at the side although TBH I find some of then a little out so they're a bit of a mixed blessing

OK the honey moon period is over ! I’ve gotten used to being about to make a sound on the Stagg EUB and I’ve had a few lessons on technique . Now I’m listening to what I’m playing and TBH I’m struggling to keep my intonation. This is particularly noticeable whenever I start moving shifting position, No real suprises there as I’m sure it’s a very common beginners problem , and as my ear/expectations increase I’m sure this problem will get worse before it gets better. So what should I do to help my intonation , scales , appregios, drills ? I don’t want to just keep playing the same thing over and over again ( in this case A blues ) just in case I compound the problem Any help or recommendations would be appreciated

Don't want to appear to be hounding this woman after all she may be legit BUT this must be the same bass http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/superb-c19th-double-bass/1001827842 although now it seems to have moved from Cheltenham to Bexley SE London . I think avoid on this occasion , although I am tempted to go round and have a look as I only live a few miles away -
Yet another reason why I have never never bought a new bass
I jest (mostly) ...... as I said, I'd rather do it a different way. Most of us on here (I suppose) play the pub / club circuit. With a live drummer in a pub / club, there really is no need for a second guitar to fill the sound. It is very rare that I see a second guitar that is doing much to justify being there. Just not for me.
Sorry wasnt having a go - personally I think its fair enough if its a singer who strums a few chords on a Tele just to fill the sound out and help them keep time. 2 dedicated guitarists is a bit more ermm specialist
I personally have never seen the point in a second guitarist. I don't really like the bands that you have mentioned. I would add another instrument instead - keys or horns perhaps - even a backing singer. I agree there is always an exception - Thin Lizzy for example - but generally not for me.
Quite a lot of exceptions : Judas Priest Iron Maiden Metallica Lynard Skynard Green Day The Pixies Talking Heads G& R My Bloody Valentine etc etc although in fairness it seems to work better in rock
I've never tried to ship a double bass but I reckon it might cost that sort of money?
But does it not depend where your shipping to ? -
In order to maximise your sales potential follow the guidelines below : Have at least one good photo Give as full a descripition as possible Dont charge a ridiculous amount for postage as it can be seen a profiteering Dont start an auction for a "valuable" antique at £ 0.99 as it might look like you didint value the item very highly yourself http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANTIQUE-c19th-DOUBLE-BASS-/170918835647?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item27cb8e75bf DOH ! ( knowing my luck they'll change it before you read this thus making me look like an idiot ! )

Are Kay Double Basses any good ?
thunderbird13 replied to thunderbird13's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Cheers Clarky something to think about as I say I'm in 2 minds I dont really need a double bass , I'm quite happy with my Stagg, but I dont want to miss out on a bargain and if I do go it I want to make sure its worth the inevitable argument with the wife -
Was having a quick look on ebay last night and saw a Kay double bass for sale near me. TBH I'm in 2 minds as its quite beat up and had a very obvious a neck repair so I'm hoping that it will be cheap and I do like the idea of owning a Kay again BUT then I'm reminded of their quality issues and what they were like to play when I was a kid. So does anyone have any experience of these ? I'm also assumming that if you need a double bass adjusted by a luther its going to be a lot more hassle than adjusting an electric bass Thanks

Dont know about the other sterotypes but from my expereince bass players are the only ones who seem to be friendly at gigs to other bands ! -
DB or EUB for me as a first timer?
thunderbird13 replied to philparker's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I can only speak from my experience but I was in a similar dilema to you. On one hand only a DB will sound like a DB and certainly if you want to do something like rockabilly slap you just cant do it on a EUB . I've also come across some bands who specify that they dont want an EUB sound , which is fair enough. On the other hand an EUB is very easy to transport .I've carried mine through rush hour across London using public transport and TBH its easier than carrying a bass guitar. In the end I picked up a stagg EUB for £200 on gumtree as I thought that it will allow me to get to grips with the both the right and left hand techniques and once I'm ready it should be easy enough to transfer onto a DB. I suppose I imagine a situation in the future where I could use the Stagg for rehearsals and use the DB for gigs -
And I realise that lessons have their place, but thus far in my life I've taught myself guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin and a bunch of other instruments using little more than a headful of theory, and the "if it hurts I am probably doing it wrong" school of thought, and largely it has worked. Can't see why this instrument is anymore special than those, few pointers here and there and i should be okay. Not saying that is isn't right for other people, and not wanting to start any arguments, just going on experience, and if it starts to hurt and i can't fix it, I'll think about it.
I've just started on EUB and am really enjoying it BUT I would seriously reconsider lessons - I've had 2 off our very own Jake Newman and the tips he's given me have been invauable to help me playing. Double bass is different to the other instruments you have mentioned as its very size not only makes it more difficult to balance and hold properly but also its that much harder to play a stop. Anyway each to their own and all that - keep having fun with it , I know I am

Aren't all bass players into Funk and Reggae???
thunderbird13 replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
No they're not -
Well of the 2 songs I know on their list I'm embarrased to say that one of them is Brown Eyed Girl Oh yeah didnt mention that to make it more interesting I'll be using my Stagg EUB for the audtion which I've only been playing for a month so I'm struggling to learn the songs AND how to play them
