1.
As for the dates, I did think that Saturdays would probably be when people are gigging, so it will be a Sunday.
Sunday might be a bit rubbish if people have to rely upon trains to get there due to engineering works . If they dig up the Orpington Line then I'm buggered
 2. Good idea - I'm always up for a meetup as long as it involves beer
 3.
Good grief do I have to put f***ing similes all over a page to make people see I'm joking. You bunch of poker arses.
I got the joke
 4.
I live in SE London and it's a two-and-a-half hour round trip for me to rehearse.
Thats part of the problem for me - this band is very local and also I can leave my gear in the rehearsal space. That makes such a difference otherwise I'd have to carry all my gear across London into work and then carry it to rehearsal and then back home afterwards. I used to do that and get home about 1 am after a midweek rehearsal but as I go further into my 40's this just doesn have any appeal anymore ! Increasingly its looking like I'll let this band do what they want and if it starts to affect my enjoyment I'll start to look for another band and look a rehearsals with my current band as a social thing rather than a musical thing
 5.
Mainly anecdotal but I was in a large band of 70+ musicians. It was hard to get them to commit to one concert a year. I've played in at least 3 bands that never got to gigging 'standard' according to the band leader. Another band the guys only wanted to play gigs less than 30mins from home and one band where they only wanted to play once every couple of months. My brother has had similar experiences including a songwriter who had written songs, got a band together to play them, then spent 3 months worth of weekly practices changing each song.
yeah unfortunatley thats my experience as well I dont know if its because there are a large number of people who dont want to gig so statistically you are going to come across them more often OR because these sorts of bands have an ever changing lineup as people join get frustrated and them leave and so there are more vacancies . FWIW I really dont get sitting around playing cover versions just for the sake of it BUT for some people that seems to be what they want
 6.
Yes! or, 'our own interpretation'... inevitably v. poor and gets 'nul points'.
worse than that ( from a classc rock covers band ) - ' We do a reaggae version of that and it sounds really good " NO IT DOESNT !!!!!!
 7.

drop one stitch one ..................
 8.
I prefer that kind of direction to the 'i can't communicate what I want to say musically' approach. For example; 'let's play that bit near the end again before and that other bit... You know, the bit that's not the chorusy bit or the other bit... I don't know what the notes/chords are for that bit, I just learnt the tab!'
This - I really hate this and always turn off half way through the conversation with the inevitable conclusion that I play the wrong bit
 9.
It annoys me when people refer to "fourths, wholes, eights" etc instead of crotchets, semibreves and quavers. It's not rocket science people!
Actually I'm the opposite - I find it a bit prentious when people use crotchets, semibreves and quavers. At least when you talk about 8 ths ,16ths etc it means something. Crotchets etc just make you sound like you;ve studied in some classical conservatory in Vienna
 10.
I think 'Cats', in the jazz fraternity, refers to hardcore jazzers who can do it, as opposed to those on the periphery of the jazz scene who are not there yet. So, say Jasper Hollby could be a 'Cat' but I wouldn't be as I am not in that league.
Does that mean your a kitten ?
 11. I've got a fever and the only perscription is more cowbell http://www.gofastvideo.com/video/876/Christopher-Walken-More-Cowbell--Classic-SNL
 12.
Bass drum instead of kick. A small thing but can be so confusing in the studio if your drummer is lazy with his vocabulary and just says 'bass'.
TBH I thought the 2 meant the same thing
 13.
I think I'll make sure I keep 50 miles away from London when that's on
But Wayne you live 50 miles from London anyway - just stay at home that day
 14. Hold on 5 pages and no-one has mentioned Ian Brown and that knob out of The Verve - same on you basschat
 15. I'v also been told that the sign spells out 666 as if you look at it sideways you have 2 six s made by the little finger and the curled up middle fingers and 1 six made by the index finger and the curld up middles and the last six being upside down and made by the thumb and the curled up fingers - probably thought of afterwards though
 16. I keep seeing things like this on ebay ( gear 4 music must have a terrible stock keeping system ) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300687513285&clk_rvr_id=330001167111&mfe=sidebar http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Archer-3-4-size-professional-Double-Bass-Damaged-RRP-849-/270946479502?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item3f15ab2d8e I was just wondering if these things are easy to repair cheaply (either by myself or a professional ) or is this too far gone and be more trouble than its worth cheers
 17. another chance to remember a great loss - this is the proper devil horn sign sorry the pictues a bit small
 18.
Some of us have a couple of beers during rehearsal - I certainly do, it's a good way of bringing my playing ability down to everyone else's level
Is this what you did at the New Model Army audition
 19. I dont suppose there's much I can do about it - they are all adults ( in fact 2 are retiring this year ! ) so I'll just have to see how it pans out. Still I prefer that to the last band situation I was in where I would get to the rehearsal in an industrial estate, go in and make polite conversation with everyone for 5 mins ,play through the same 8 songs and then make polite conversation for 5 mins and go home and NEVER gig ! Still wonder why I did that for 6 months
 20. Bit of a rant really I play just for fun – I’m neither good enough or lucky enough to have been in a band which makes any money , no problem it’s my hobby. As a result of this the bands ( which I have lasted in ) tend to muck about a bit at rehearsal sitting around chatting and drinking. I ‘m a bit of a lightweight with alcohol and I know that it ruins my timing but in the past I’ve thought what the hell everyone else is drinking why shouldn’t I . The result tends to lead me being sacked as my playing goes downhill. The band I’m currently in rehearses for 3 2hours then goes to the pub for 2 hours which I think is a pretty good way of doing it. Now however they are saying why spend money in a pub when they can just buy some cans and drink at rehearsal. I hear alarm bells ringing already and I don’t really know what to do I like them as people and playing with them is fun BUT I know that when people start drinking their playing generally doesn’t get better and ultimately I’ll just be standing in a disused office with 4 other semi drunk men pretending to play (god that sounds depressing !!) I suppose I’ll have this band as a “social “ event and look for another band that takes things more seriously ( although with my other commitments I don’t really want to so this yet ) Has anyone else come across this problem in rehearsal ? ( on the odd occasion I play a gig I stick to 1 pint of shandy, or 2 if I’m on really late and have to hang around)
 21.
Thanks everyone. Feel pretty deflated but oh well, onwards and upwards as they say
Dont worry too much about it - you did really well by the sound of it
 22. Right so which one is first to start a NMA tribute band
 23. Your certainly not alone - I've just come back to reading ( not sight reading ) after a break and I'm having to relearn everything. The thing which gives me the most problem is 16th note rest. I found that counting numbers confuses me more so now I use ta for 8ths te for 16ths and ra and re for the respectve rests, not a huge difference but I find it useful to get away form numbers. The other thing I do is use guitar pro and program a short exercise using one pitch but a combination of 8ths and 16ths notes and rests . TBH its not the most exciting way to learn but doing that for 5 mins a day might help you over the hump Good Luck !
 24.
Don't forget Subaudio although not sure if he got an audition or not.
Yes , sorry about that thats what happens when I speed read threads on a work computer In fact total respect to anyone who had the bottle to try, I only wish I have the ability and courage to do the same
 25. Hold on , Billyapple, Discreet, Bluray and Linus27 all managed to get an audition with NMA - I am seriously impressed well done guys and Linus fingers crossed
