At the gig on Wednesday, we were on first, out of a total of 3 bands. I brought my Mark Bass Combo to use, DI out to the house PA too. We did our soundcheck, and then the next band went on to do theirs, and straight away the bassist plugged into my amp and soundchecked with it. Same with the 3rd band. Now I don't mind lending the amp out at a gig, as ever, help a fellow bassist in need but I didn't get any 'Oh can I use your amp' or anything like that. Just rock up and use it no questions. I did make the point of going up and saying 'Oh you using my amp are you' and change any of the settings at your peril. Am I being a bit tight and funny? or should I have been consulted?
Damn right they should have asked. It may have been an idea to politely say it was going to be packed away after your set.

I own a black RV5 and the only issue I had with it was the bar over the strings was a very flimsy construction and may as well be taken off, but it needs something to hold the A string down. The sound is superb with a bit of treble rolled off. Great for the money, but needed just that little bit of attention.

I think he was watching his hands because there are new songs in the set and with a TV camera on him and a squillion people watching every note for mistakes, bad fingering, alternative runs etc to analyse, no wonder he's careful !!

If Ric made a budget range, it would probably start at £1200, to cover their losses of orders on the normal range!! While people out there are still GASsing for Rics, that is exactly what they will sell. The chances of us ever seeing a RickenSquier are just below zero percent. Please let us know what wit and wisdom the charming Mr Hall comes back to you with.

Bass guitar solos should only be played if you are : a] John Enwistle - deceased b] Jim Lea of Slade - retired c] Geddy Lee - in an arena with people who expect that sort of thing anyway Otherwise they are the devil's work. I get very embarrased when asked to go all widdly on bass and I just play the bass part a bit louder or faster or both.

Bassist available for working band. Based in Bolton. Big repertoire 60's, 70's and so on. Glam, classic rock a speciality. Gear vocals transport - reliable, quick learner. I have first shout on a good drummer with a PA system and contacts with a decent agent. No metal or grunge etc! Thanks. www.ianedmundson.co.uk

He's not my guitarist anymore, sadly. He did angst over one at a guitar show some years ago. I had to drag him away from it, as it was phenominally expensive.

I think they have done some of these as a Trujillo sig - possiby with an altered spec.
@12stringbassist - I'm loving the Streamer Chrome Tone, is that a custom shop model?
Hi, They were a listed special limited run item. Quite decent spec / price. Great big sound, superb looking, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMCRv6rPBlw

Budget basses, anyone else fallen in love with their's?
12stringbassist replied to a topic in Bass Guitars
I bought this Westfield P bass for £75.00 for other people to use at a jam night that I run. It's so nice to play and feels and sounds just like a fat 70's P. Will have to think again about letting mortals touch it. -
I love my two. I didn't always like Warwicks, though. I played one (can't remember what model) at a jam night and thought the neck was like a tree trunk (far too big). However, I came a cross the Streamer Chrome Tone and had to try it because of its utter glam rock-ness. Later on, I came across a one-off custom shop Thumb NT and fell for that, too. Tastes can change. I think some Warwicks are maybe seen as being 'of a certain period' - like Mark King's Jaydees.

I swapped over from a Westfield P to my Ric 4003BB the other night and several vertebrae in my back nearly turned to dust. I actually heard my back creak.

THIS remains my dream....

Just been looking at my Dad's old Bass Guitars.

I once drove all the way from Bolton to Edinburgh to look at a rather derelict Washburn 8-string on the advice of a mate. Not in the market for one now, but it's a nice bass that you have there. I have a similar Aria ZZB deluxe in my collection and would say that would certainly be a keeper for you. All I had to do with mine was raise the pickups slightly and be careful not to bang it on things! An excellent bass. I really would hang on to it. -
My wife is very understanding, really. I find 29 basses a really odd number and one of these days, I'm probably going to have to broach the subject of number 30. She knows very well I don't NEED another bass and if I get it, it's because I WANT it. I would never dream of hiding a new bass from her and would 99% certainly tell her I was planning to pull the trigger.

I've just checked it out with the people I always use on http://www.lcn.com/whois/search?s=funkbass&commit= I'd just buy the .org name. Hope that helps.

Tortoise shell doesn't go with maple - prove me wrong

Oh that's NIIIIICE. Looking at the earlier pics, I'm quite surprised that the only two I am keen on are the Black P bass w/maple neck and the sunburst Pbass that is missed mourned by its previous owner. They look great. If I had a black P with a maple neck, I'd be happy with a dark tort plate, but would be tempted to go mirror or black at some point. -

Should we be in bands for money, or for enjoyment?
12stringbassist replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I have a day job that pays the bills. Gigging for me is about the mental exercise and enjoyment of playing and a little bit of socialising. I happily admit I do expect to be paid enough for an evening's work in a pub and the travel to get there, but at the same time, I have cheerfully given up occasional afternoons or evenings to do things for free for Help The Heroes and such. The playing is sometimes enough for me. Rehearsing should be to get new songs in, or to tidy existing ones up. Not a paid-for evening's socialising. I would not gig regularly for nothing, as I believe that is what people who are out there to be discovered often have to do. I'm not out there to be discovered any longer. Good luck to those who are prepared to invest their time to get ahead, though. Horses for courses. -
If you had to make do with one bass - which would it be?
12stringbassist replied to Black Coffee's topic in Bass Guitars
Active: Warwick Steamer Chrome Tone. Passive: Possibly my Ric 4003 FG... -

It's solid, but seems to be chambered. The finish is a bit more green than the first photo suggests. Very thin from front to rear.

New to me today- very pleased with this - classy and a bargain, too. Colour on photo boosted, as it's more green than orig photo suggested.
