1. My favourite band of all time. If someone was starting a tribute, this 12stringbassist would be there like a shot.
2. Joe Jackson - A slow song. Beautiful.
3. The last gig I did with my previous band.... a sax player got up to make tooting, burping and farting noises for the whole of the second spot.... and stood in front of me, using my mic. Arrangements went out of the window. Absolute chaos. The singer was pissed out of his tiny mind and thought it was the best gig we'd ever done. When I parted with the band, I took the guitarist with me. Photos exist of that gig - I can't even bear to look at them 4 months later.
4. When she sings and plays, she's really solid. That bass solo from Suzi is not her finest moment, but you do have to try things - perhaps not always in front of an audience.
5. John Entwistle Buzzard Jack Bruce Warwick Sig - why an EB3 shape from Warwick?
6. My standard reply is that I wish other manufacturers had the wit, imagination and enough ideas not to just use old Fender designs. There are endless other shapes they could dream up, but no - another P bass or Jazz bass design turns up every few weeks. Pointless. If I want a Pbass shaped bass, it will be a Fender (or even a Squier). Anything else is just a copy, whether it's more expensive or not, and doesn't really interest me at all.
7. As requested - The Warwick Streamer Chrome Tone. That would have to go under my other arm if the building was on fire. The Midnight Blue Ric is among these (next to end right) :
8. This is the one I'd have to save from a burning building, as it's totally irreplaceable. My #1 go-to bass is either (active) Warwick Steamer Chrome Tone, or (passive) Midnight blue Ric 4003.
9. Gibson SG Supreme - limited edition made one month only. The maple top gives a lovely treble you don't often find on an EB3 type bass.
10. I have to agree on the utter fabulousness of these basses. One of my top three..
11. I went to audition for them not long ago and was impressed by them. Nice people and good players. I'm committed to a band now, or I would have happily gone with them. Whoever takes the job will be happy.
12. My Gibson SG Supreme bass. Made in a very limited run for one month.
13. Music Ground in Denmark St had this collector's item on sale last time I was there a couple of years ago. They advertised it as being ex-Dave Hill of Slade. I mentioned that I run a comprehensive Slade site www.slayed.co.uk with details of their gear going back to the 60's and I assured them that Dave Hill wouldn't be seen dead in the same town as that guitar. They looked at me as if I was mad and they put it on EBay as such. So, I contacted Slade's management for clarification ..... and I think they had a word. They guitar has been advertised since as being "ex-Showaddywaddy". Of course, I am not an expert on popular all round middle of the road entertainers Showaddywaddy at all. But a 1950's off-pink penis styled guitar doesn't really sound like them either. I think they MAY still have it on EBay. Have MG still got it and - if so - what is it being advertised as today???
14. I wouldn't change the basses I've bought over the years, even the ones I didn't use enough and sold on. I would, however, change things so that I had presevered with the 5 string Fender Jazz bass I sold. Having bought a Retrovibe RV5 recently and mastered it quite easily (better string spacing), I still wish I'd stuck with that Fender. I hate it when an instrument defeats me!!
15. In that condition, I wouldn't go over £850. There are clean examples around. The thing with getting paper under the tailpiece is an issue called tail lift.
16.
And no less than John Hall himself informed me that there was nothing wrong with the CV finish on the Blue Boy and that I had been leaving the bass under UV light, in view of sunlight and also in a smokey atmosphere; the bass was subject to none of these.
Without opening an old wound up, John Hall is not an easy man to deal with. He doesn't like Rics being criticised and if the bass had exploded on the way to the shop you were going to buy it from, it would still be 'the buyer's fault'. I have a (Aug 2002) 4003 BB that hasn't changed colour at all, though I don't take it out a lot. Can't complain there. My 4003 FG (Dec 2001) is perfect. I also have a 4003 MID (from Nove 2004) that bled blue paint into the binding. As mine was a 'grey import' and not covered by warranty (I said that from the start), I asked for tips on how to fix the problem. It developed into a shouting match, which was never my intention. Top chap that he is.. If you're reading Mr Hall, Hello.
17. Hi, That's a really nice bass. I have the Dean Rhapsody as an 8-string and it's really a gorgeous piece of work. Someone will really like this bass. Cheers, Ian
18. I do have a bass with 26 frets. It's wasted on me. I normally stop around the 14th fret as a rule.
19.
Bump!
I've got one of these too - Greenburst with black scratchplate from 1976. Lovely bass. If Ebay hadn't pulled it - It will be the Ric Police - you'd have got full asking price for it.
