How Can You Justify Spending £5,350 on a New Bass??
Toddy replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Its too much for a Bass,,, But check out how much some folk spend on extras on cars,,, friggin thousands for sports packs, upgrades etc,,, must be 100 top end cars in this village alone,,and to boot,,, gigging over xmas with the snow,, its was all the expensive cars which seemed to get stuck... I guess some people just have cash to blow on what they are into..,, this would cater for that crowd... -
Burns Flyte through a WEM Dominator MkII. Somewhere I've got the photos to prove it, when I can dig them out I'll put them up here.
Would love to see that pic!!! Mine was Hondo P bass,, through a HH 100watt Pa head into a 15"cab... no-one complained at the time!!
I'd just go with the collective text message method...
I agree with that also,,, Although true and funny story, the bassist in one of the well known bands round ere,, threw his Thunderbird at the drummer and walked out mid - gig.... Still being talked about to this day..... ten min later to an awkward silence he walked back in,,, picked up his Bass and left for good...... -
Totally agree with Doddy on this one..good post.. Typical set -up, is an agent wishes to showcase bands to a group of influential bookers,,, books a large venue,,somewhere like Batley Variety,, lays on maybe up to 12 up to 15 bands in one day ,, all have to provide own gear including backline and lights to show they are "self contained" Its usually chaos !! six bands or so setting up for morning session, quickly soundchecking,, then morning session begins,, all getting maybe 20 mins (beware timing on these things are tight, and going over your slot is bad form) if lucky it will have a compere who will give a brief overvue of what you are about. Someone will always be late and delay procedings - this adds to the chaos ! After morning session is over,,all bands de-rig and get out ASAP,, afternoon bands turn up,, everyone trying to get in and out,,they soundcheck,, afternoon session etc... It can be long day and dont expect feedback on the day.. apart from quick hello,,thanks,, goodbye.. Saying that,,,,, the agent should write or mail you with details, on time to arrive,, what to bring and expect in advance.. Just treat it as a mini gig.. plus yours might be different to the above !! It might come to nothing,, which in itself is good experiance,, however last one I went to , ended up with great work, and a good write up in Stage magazine..(if interested will find you a link) let us know how you got on !! hope it goes well...

Learned this one from me ol guitard... If changing up a semi tone or tone,, leave your left hand where it is,and smack the arse end of the bass with your right hand , moving the guitar rather than your hand,,,,,
... sounds like a catchy interesting beginning, I'd say I'm surprised to read that you were all satisfied by their loudness... I've often had problems about tone definition in the mix with TE and SWR, due to their scooped sound
The power is in the mids lol,, Gigged both these for years,, now have huge Peavey rig,,, but only because someone wound the knobs off the SWR in a jamming session an blew a driver,,, and even after twice replacing the speakers it never sounded the same.. The Trace sounded awesome,,,, but have played thru one recently at a great gig at Scarborough which was a 1 x15 with backline supplied and TBH it sounded a bit clicky with my current bass (Ibanez srx705),, but that was my eq if honest... Cant comment on the new ones.. Would have my ol Trace back in an instant,,,,, provided the drivers were original......an re the Hotel,,,mmm,, better not lol That a Golden Strad DB on your myspace EMA??

I bought one of the 4x10 300w combos when Electro bought a poo load of them,, It was pretty versatile and the DI section was good also,, used an 80,s Ibanez Musician and had a great sound,, However when upgraded to a new Warwick Streamer,, one of the first one pick/up models, and used one of the preshape EQs ended up with a KILLER sound,, in pubs would shake your internals, and had compliments almost every gig... since then had SWR Redhead,,, also pretty awesome, but still miss that bright punch which took no effort at all,,, Sold the bugger to pay for a night in a hotel,,,Long long story.........

Underated,, who was the guy out the Boomtown Rats,,,,, great sound and great bass lines... Overated,,Nah,,,,Its not a competition,, respect to all.......

Hey Pete,, I believe Im in much the same boat,, I tried to learn theory early on in my playing career and never got round to using it really,, 99%of the time I get asked to learn a track, learn it by ear and remember the pattern on the fretboard,,However I am good enough to deal with the change the key situation and have no issues with busking or jamming along to any track.. If anything still isnt right it gets sorted out in rehearsal Im trying to learn to read again but TBH in the last 20yrs Ive never been given sheet music to read and it wont happen with my current bands or when I get asked to guest in the studio. I also play in a well known tribute and am passionate about doing justice to the songs, But in answer to your original question, suppose its what you need it for,, I personally couldnt sit in an orchestra pit next week,, but that guy probably couldnt bounce around on stage at Butlins...... Strangely a lot of my past playing buddies have gone into teaching music and music tech at colleges etc,but Im still the only one who brings home the bacon by actually playing live. Saying that I am genuinely interested in learning more,,and considering how much time I spend on here these days,,, guess Im running out of excuses....

How did it go then?

61 and a job on shifts,,, now thats organisation... Since April so missed a few months,,,, Also a ticket for a very early retirement!!
-
Aye,,,,, And not just the pubs,,,,, Last night,, huge hall in the North East,, 2 x Dance floors.. Big Xmas bash,,£32 a ticket etc. Everyone up dancing after the meal,,DJ introduces the band..then cos its "his"gig turns all the room lights off,,, everyone sits down,, understandably,,, you cant see !! makes us look a right bunch of charlies,,, few people tried to dance in the dark,,, but not really happening.. ended set after playing real well,,,,told venue owner to get his DJ sorted,, second set,, both dance floors full...... but it killed the atmosphere for us,,,,,mind you xmas bashes,,,,thats another topic..... Rant over,,,,,,night before was awesome,,Darlington Rocks! 99% of peeps after few beers cant even remember what you played,,still affects YOU tho...
-
Hey ,,Hope you have a great gig,, We play the Diamond Club about 2 or 3 times a year and its always a pleasure...a great venue........I believe a young Mr Bonham was in there the other week...great currys inside the venue as well.. especially if there is two bands on the place should be busy,,, enjoy....
-
only time Ive had to pack up and go home is when we cooked an O1V mixing desk,,, Never really trusted anything digital live since!! Used to entertain at one of the big racecourses tho,, and if the conditions were poor they would abandon the races and pay anyway,,which was quite cool..
I usually run the amp at one overall setting and then eq on the bass from there. A lot of it depends on the particular bass. The Status preamps run at a very different frequency to the others, so you can usually get the best sound from maximum treble and bass, with the mid position switch to the flat setting. With the Sadowsky preamp, I usually use 50 percent of both treble and bass. That seems to give the nicest overall sound. The treble control (and pickup positioning) on the Ray is a lot more sensitive, so usually I'm only a gnat's whisker above flat on that one, but again, mids flat and bass boosted to max. Basically, I like a scooped sound with plenty of richness from the bass frequency & plenty of treble for sparkling highs. Usual amp settings are input/gain at 25%, bass at about 60%, treble at 75%, mids all flat in the middle & output volume at 50%. The amp settings may sound odd, but with a powerful preamp on the bass, half of the job is already done. Also, making sure you're using a lot less input gain than output volume seems to give a much sweeter sound overall. Rich, aka. The eq hooligan!
With the hooligan,, on input gain,,, Every time Ive bought an amp, esp Traces,, was always told to run input gain as high as poss,,and see many players do just this,,, I dont care,,,, it sounds pants,,,,,,a much sweeter sound IS obtained from being sensible with Input gain.... Dont think John Chambers amps even have a adjustable input gain,, (thats another story tho).......
