1. The compressor stays on on my EBS HD350 at about 2 o'clock though everything I do, It smooths out peaks and makes a few effects that much more usable. It does add some noise (as it boosts the little hum I get from my effects chain), but I find the pro's outweigh the con's when it comes to keeping what I do sound processed and tight.
2. If I'm not mistaken you'll be after a 34" rather than 35" length (like most 4 stingers, although I could be wrong about this) and 17mm spacing. The Yamaha TRB series is a damn good weapon of choice with those specs (defo 34" and 17mm). The older Yamaha TRB 1006 comes up on here fairly often (J.R.Bass was selling my old one a while back) and for the £450 odd they fetch they are bloody STUNNING! Most Ibanez 6 ers have the same spacing etc too.. Warwick 6ers are tight and favour the 34" scale but will set you back considerably more and the neck is waaaaay thicker than the Ibanez you've played.
3. Did this get it's final finish... Or are we still waiting for warm weather? Shep
4.
Thanks A little more info about that pedal.... The three knobs currently are volume, gain, and blend. The toggle switch is not really working out the way I'd like it to, so I think I'm going to be constructing a circuit with an input impedance dial, so to speak. You don't really hear the difference when using the toggle, but you can hear the EFFECT it has on how "sputtery" the fuzz gets (which usually happens with high output basses) I use 18volt MTD's almost exclusively, so I am in the same boat. That's what led me to start messing around building this box to begin with. The next prototype I'm actually working on with a knob for the impedance works in the following manner: The input impedance of the pedal would hold steady at a little less than 1 MegOhm, since the 1-Meg pot is in parallel with a 10-MegOhm resistor in front of it. Rolling the impedance knob to, say, halfway would move about 500 kOhms of resistance into series with the audio signal before the first JFET and provide the remaining 500kOhms to ground, but the impedance, as I recall, would stay roughly the same - I'm working out the fine details.
Amazingly that actually makes sense to me! Very interested to hear the results! Keep us posted. Shep
5.
Hi mate, if i would be you il have a look to this one,i had i chance to play and was amazing instrument should try out http://www.biarnel.com/liuteria/sticomk2/sticomkii.html
Hi bud, I've had a good look at these already. I'm not a huge fan of the appearance and the price for a 4 string is more than I want to pay by a fair bit. Plus I'm after a 5, which would be a first for the Luthier which rules it out for me. Cheers for the heads up though! Shep
6.
Actually it's at least 15 years since I last played at The Old Angel. I remember that the sound was fairly ropey and the PA not up to much, but I always figured that the problem was more the shape of the room (never play anywhere where the largest room dimension is the height). Since Dick Venom is as much about the visual performance as it is about the sound, we'll probably get away with turning up and rocking out! If you'd prefer to see us in more "comfortable" conditions we have gigs coming up in March and April at The Golden Fleece, The Rescue Rooms and The Social.
I'll prob pop along anyway… but I'll make sure I see yo at Rescue Rooms too as the sound in there seems to better and better every gig I go to!
7.
Thanks! Next gig is on Friday 4th March at The Old Angel in Nottingham. See you there?
Most likely yes! I'm sure you've played the Old Angel before though? As such you'll know that NO band can sound good through that PA in that room?
Sorry for backtracking the thread haha, but i was listening to this and i thought it was excellent, reminded me a lot of Disturbed mixed with the harsh effects and synths of Fear Factory - safe to say it's a damn good combination and definitely unlike any single band i've heard! Good job!
Ha. Thanks bud! I however am not playing with these chaps anymore (I do however remain good friends with them). I was struggling to balance all the stuff I was doing and Aphemia was one of the bands that I had to let go. They are still playing together though last I checked and the stuff you hear on the Myspace is still played (most of it at least). They are very good at what they do. Shep
8. Zombie pedal is awesome looking. Great work. Your description is of interest to me as well as I am strictly an Active Bass user.. Does the buffer auto detect the optimum level and do the job for you, or is it dial controlled and you just 'tune' it to your bass? I'd be very interested to hear samples - same settings, one used on a passive and one on a hot 18v circuit (like a bart)… You should do similar with a Gate as well and have an active friendly Woolly Mammoth-esque pedal… I', sure that would appeal to ALOT of bassists.
9.
.Here's a clip from a recent gig - RockinRollin VampireMan:
Liking this track dude… reminds me of some classic Sex Pistols meets the darker side of Rocket From The Crypt. Actually think it would sound cool with some brass on top as well Defo need to get to a show soon!
10. Fat Burning Step EP just released!!! This the side project of Miloopa bassist 'Bond' who is covered quite a bit over this thread (prob the biggest influence for me on synth bass work) http://fatburningstep.bandcamp.com/ Loving the tracks at the mo, particularly 'Higher Dub' Shep
11. I havn't played one personally but the Cirrus has a reputation to be a very good bass. Many Peavey instruments are considered 'good for the money' but the Cirrus tends to be considered a keeper. They made the bass with quite a large choice of wood and finish options, each of which with thier own price tags, with the exotic ones costing around the £1k marker. If it's in good condition I'd say £250 was a bargain regardless of the finish. Shep
12. BGish? (Bass Guitar ish I assume?). Well, to my ear that's pretty similar to the NS Designs I played. Maybe a little more sharp definition, but I assume that would be a top end tweak of EQ? Or is my ear just not trained to the sound of upright yet?
13. Cheers folks. I havn't seen a CR5M for £1100... I wa asking why it cost £1100 MORE than an NXT5 based on current retail prices. By the sounds of it it's clearly got some bells and whistles, bi I'm not sure I could justify spending double. Any thoughts on the bassline upright I linked to?
14. I haven't experienced anything and am not aware of any super secret secret squirrel work going on in the background that may cause such. Anyone still experiencing problems today or has it straightened itself out over night? Shep
15. Hey folks... I REALLY have the upright bug at the mo having had a quick tinker on a friends NXT4 its really opened my eyes to a new world of bass playing... Plus treating it as a new instrument gives me the chance to learn more theory and apply it to somethin new and exciting. I was quite impressed with the NXT, but constantly hear about the CR and CR'M range. Id be looking at getting a 5 so I can slot it straight in with material I currently play, so... Is a CR5M for example really worth £1100 more (over double) of the NXT5? I appreciate it has a higher build quality, plus better electronics, but I thought the NXT was quite well made and how much of a sound difference am I going to hear for that extra 1k? I am also very drawn to this - http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_deta...Acoustic%20Bass I admit I'm mainly drawn due to cosmetic reasons, but also given the basslines current price list it's a bit of a bargain (and about what id pick up a 2nd hand CR5M for, or a substantial saving on a new one) and sound samples on the bassline site sound very similar to the NS Design tone I've heard on YouTube. Thoughts? Shep
16. I'm seriously tempted to go down the M9 route!
17. Finally started a FaceBook page for my electronica/dubstep/D&B project... http://www.facebook.com/pages/Our-Helical-...62580841?ref=ts Sure I've introduced them over thi thread already so I'll not do it again Check us out and click that 'like' button! Shep
18. Nah, Johnny hates Prodigy... That's why it was amusing! Certain parts of songs, one particular (that you'd of heard live, Si), had to be re-written on the spot due to the ring modulator LFO moving slightly from the click (it's all analogue, and not usually noticeable, but under the microscope it's pretty obvious). So we slowed the LFO right down and I modulate it manually with expression constantly in some rather odd ways... It was bloody hard work to keep a rhythm going but the result was a square-wave sounding synth line with what sounds like a programmed stutter, much like Prodigy use a lot on the recent album. I'm kinda hearing this track in a new light for the 1st time but I love it, and the manual manipulation whilst playing is quite an achievement... Not sure I fancy doing it live though
19.
thoughts.. i want to hear them there results.. si
I'll make sure I give you a sneak preview. Somehow 2 of the 3 tracks have a real 'Prodigy' vibe going on, which is an influence we've never considered or heard in the music before. Interesting.
Same here. Wouldn't mind knowing more of the M9 & M13 myself as they've recently been brought to my attention.
I've played with the M9 a bit and though the modulation section was great, as well as the delay and reverb. I'm interested to see if it can replace 5 or 6 parts of my board effectively which will help reduce the massive distance of cabling on the board as well as reduce the number of power supplies etc...
20. This thread will never die!!!! Just finished in the studio recording our EP. Gone great. Johnny Carter (Pitchshifter) is a slave driver of an engineer but the results are looking awesome. Just the final mix to do. Was a great experience for learning how my board works under the microscope though, very useful. Task for the weekend - update the firmware on my MP-201... Sweet! Actually after the studio experience I'm considering a Line 6 M9 to replace a number of pedals on the board, thinking if can do the job of my chorus, phaser, at least 1 dirt pedal, Trem (maybe ring mod) and arpeggiator (anyone want to comment on how good the arpeggiator is on the M9 (I currently use a Boss SL-20). Thoughts...? Shep
21.
Hey Shep, Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, and pick fault with them, thats all useful stuff. Are the updated questions more useful?
Hi Joe, Yeah I think so. Questions are more specific now… which in theory should mean you get better quality of answer and less waffle
22.
I want one! What are the prices like?
http://www.gbguitars.co.uk/gb_sales.asp This 1st 2 are about where the full spec prices start. As ex-show instruments they are a damn good deal over the price of having similar built to your spec.
23. Picked up a Korg EA-1 from AJ. Well packed, as described and helped with a few technical questions afterwards. Another easy transaction. Cheers again bud Shep
