Build Diary - RIM Marseer 6 Custom
pantherairsoft replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Build Diaries
Cheers Mark. A beast it is. That freeboard is about 5mm wider than the Roscoe at the 24th! Going to have to give your 3 octave board another go soon. Drop me a message if your free one night next week! -
This is exactly what my Roscoe Century Standard Fretless has. The trim pot is indeed gain. Basically it adds a little juice I find the combo fantastic for the fretless tone with loads of versatility in the tone. The push/pull on the mid (400 or 800hz cut/boost) is very useful. I havn't tried it in a fretted bass, but Barts are often refered to as 'dark' in terms of tone and I'd say this is true. Lovely deep, warm tone, but not as much top end sparkle as something like an EBS pre. I'm very happy with the combination and won't be changing it in te fretless.
Nice looking bass man! Is this a custom ETS bridge?
It is indeed. Robbie has them made to order for his basses -
I can see one BIG benefit to Basschat users specifically though… With Bernie building more basses in a shorter space of time it means EBS_freak will be putting more pictures in the GB Porn Thread!!!
-
Had a good chat with Bernie about this today, and as EBS_freak has already stated it seems the 'split' is on positive terms, with EBS wanting to push UK presence, hence moving to a distributor with reps on the road and a large catalogue of customers already taking other products from them. From a business sales perspective the move makes sense for EBS…. If it works out that way is something we will have to wait and see. From Bernie's perspective it means he can concentrate on what his business actually does, at a time when EBS products were taking up more time than GB Basses was. I get the impression he is slightly relieved to see the move from GB shores and it means he can get back on track with all the builds he has on the books at the moment. You will all be happy to hear that he seconds the thoughts about a lightweight head and thinks that without one in the range the road for the new distributor will be a rocky one… something I think we all knew. It does sadden me a little though, as Bernie was happy to resolve EBS based issues (I had a few in the early days) with his own resources. being a fully fledged distributor, I know the new supplier won't do that, and will instead enforce EBS's manufacturers warranty, meaning those of us that (god forbid) develop any issues with EBS gear will have to have our items shipped back to Europe to be looked at by EBS technicians rather than getting them sorted here in the UK… Fingers crossed no more issues!!!

Give Mark @ Hot Rox a shout - http://www.hotroxuk.com/ He deal with Chunk. If he doesn't have one in stock he'll get one. The pedal is great. One of the best synth/fuzz pedals out there. Very versatile. Just be prepared to sit with it and programme to get the exact sounds your after!
Satin...
... Is exactly the word I was struggling to find last night! I was however making the bit up about lacquering... We have decided with satin oil finish and wax! -
What sort of finish is going on this? Oiled? Poly?
Couple of layers of oil to bring out the wood, then off for lacquer. Not high gloss though, just enough to make it pretty. Robbie will prob fill us in on the exact details. Oil is Arm R Seal is the oil if I'm not mistaken. -

Another couple pics from today's initial setting up of the bass... I'm well informed that initial set up allows a good medium-low action before any tweaking so things are looking damn good! -
HURRY UP WITH IT! haha. I keep checking back to this build diary every day because I want to see the finished article I've gotta say this is one of the most stunning basses I have ever seen. How much is it costing you in all?
I know mate... Can't wait. Robbies clearly excelled himself on this one, with so many people checking the thread so often. Also had lots of people send me messages about the bass, it really seems to be rustling some feathers! I'm sure Robbie appreciates all the comments and feedback as well. The more the merrier... Also PM'd you bud. -
Thanks very much! As soon as we sort our tour our I'll post it on here. If only we could sort out some kind of basschat festival....
Now THAT is a bloody good plan!

If you want top end bite then the EBS inboard is the way! I love it.

I have Barts in my Roscoe fretless. They suit the fretless tone perfectly. Very dark and warm, with huge response in the mid's. There is not of 'sparkle' on the top, but then I rarely need it on the fretless. I've never used a fretless with such great tone and so I have to give some serious respect to the Bart's. I have not heard a fretted bass with Bart's, or at least not tried it myself, but I have heard the word 'Dark' used to describe the tone much like I did above. I would consider the EBS pre'Bright', so Bart's being 'Dark' would be better described and smooth, round and warm. Shep

RARE COMPETITION STRIPE FENDER USA P BASS
pantherairsoft replied to CHARLIE-BROWNE's topic in Basses For Sale
I can vouch for this being the real deal and the tripes are definitely NOT painted on. Back in my guitar shop working days the Fender rep bought one of these in to try and tempt us with. I am not a fan personally, but we took one and sold it in a week. It was a limited edition at the time. I beleive they do a guitar (6 string) in the new catalogue with a similar concept (but somewhat more expensive) which I beleive is also limited edition. EDIT - This is the guitar I was thinking off, as such I take back the comment about them being similar! lol - http://www.fender.com/news/index.php?display_article=186 -

Lol. Cool. Let me know what you think. I know very few people that use them as you don't see them anywhere... Only way to try them is to take a punt like I did. I would be nice to know my thoughts on them are mirrored by others. If they get popular though I'd better stock up before the price rockets Yeah... Back to the Marseer! Hopefully not too long now. Checking the set up, finalising the neck profile, which seems like it's 99% already, sprayshop, electrics, final set up... Then mine!!!!!! -
Thanks for that dude! Yeah, the pricing is very keen. How about feel, are they softer than usual or are they tight? As far as I recall, most of the DR strings are slightly easier going, used to use Hi-Beams a long time ago when I "played" 6 string fretless Eude
I find them pretty soft under finger but the sound is by no means soft. I originally went from mediums to light to try and reduce friction as I have sensitive little fingers Through my search the Overwaters were the smoothest feeling of all of them. There is great string tension, but the way they are wound just works so well, almost like they are coated... But they aren't. OW strings are one of those things in the bass world that I don't understand as to why everyone doesn't use them. Cost & performance to me nothing comes close. -

Tonally I find the Overwaters very similar to DR Black Beauties (which would look awesome on the Marseer) which a good friend of mine swears by. I have never tried the Low Riders so would not wantto comment. I find them quite bright and good in the upper mids. I tried so many brands I lost track until 2 years ago when I took a punt on a set of Overwaters and have never used anything since. Plus the price in a 6 string set is sooooooo reasonable! -

Big update from Robbie… Another shot of the headstock for good measure. Bass gets it's first stringing up and the nut gets cut to accommodate my choice of stings (Overwater Light Weight Nickels) The cut-away gets done to make space for my little hobbit-like gut. -
