1. It's out. Basschat can have the link before anyone else Patient Zero - Scarecrow Tactics If you like electronica & you like hiphop then give it a whirl! It's a 'name your price' download with no minimum so if you like please feel free to enter £0 and grab a free copy.
2. Maybe he upped his game. I saw them from the upper circle last year in Manchester so could see down on the stage and while the guitarist had a killer board, the bass player had nothing but a tuner. About time he dabbled more!
3. Here you go, 30 pages of discussion covering everything you want to know - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/72012-drum-n-bassdubstep/page__hl__dubstep Get reading! As a side note - Enter Shikari. The bass player plays clean bass only. No effects at all. All the Dubstep stuff is done with a computer and synth by Rou. Disappointing!
4. To expand on that, what you are asking for... 'To play a note an it be reproduced an octave lower' ... Can be performed by most octave pedals by turning the 'dry' volume off and turning the -1 octave volume up. Nearly all (if not all) will allow this. However, going as low as a detuned C is just not going to cut it. For analogue octavers, tracking anything lower than 5th fret (A) on the E string is tough and tends to come with an inconsistent note, glitching and a little loss of presence. Reproducing all the elements of a tone that low can be quite tough. If you bear in mind as well that your bass cab is unlikely to reproduce the fundamental of a Drop C if you we're playing it normally, expecting an Octaver to do anything even near as good a job is a no no. Some digital octavers will track much better lower down, but even they will loose definition and tracking much lower than a typical open E string. So, your understanding of an Octaver is correct, but using one to play much lower than the register of the bass is problematic.
5. It's taken far too long, but Scarecrow Tactics is released this Monday (24th!). Phew... 4 tracks, 4 MC's, 4 continents. Can't wait for you to hear it!
6. Thanks dude. Really glad you like it. Can't wait for the next live outing! I've been blown away by the feedback from this release. More than anything I've done. I've had 20 or so emails from people commenting on the sounds and structures and far more downloads than I expected. Quite taken back by the reaponse.
7.
I haven't kept up with this post - thanks for the reply. Questions though, So do you use this pedal live and use the Pitchfactor tuner - any issues? I could get the pedal sooner if I sell my tuner Also, the auxiliary switch. I didn't realise that I'd need one. Looking at it though, I would have assumed you could use the Pitchfactor itself to move up and down the banks - or am I missing the point?
I don't use an Aux switch. It will allow you to access extra features that normally require additional presses etc (like getting to the tuner on one press and scrolling up & down in bank mode - without it you scroll up only, but as I only use 4 or 5 banks thats not an issue). It's not essential though!
8. Hey folks, Another project I'm now involved in... "KADE is a combination of two minds; that of Rysic Cygo (Ash West-Mullen) and SubTric (Shep on Bass). Together they create improvised, electronic beatscapes using a laptop and bass guitar. Their live show is unique in that no song is performed the same twice and yet they lay down solid grooves with elements of introspection, feeding off the energy in the room and the vibe of the evening. The music is organic, dark & twisted with driving intensity and subtle complexity. KADE aims to provide a more versatile and entertaining alternative to an in house DJ or a mix CD in a club or bar setting, mixing in popular (and some more alternative) samples and songs into their otherwise original set. They are the perfect resident outfit with a minimal setup and maximum versatility." Yes - everything is improvised! We played our 1st show last week and after a roaring success we decided that we'd put our favourite bits of the jams leading up to the gig out as an EP, so after a week of EQ'ing stuff so it sounds right on a stereo instead of a PA I give you... KADE - aphotic love feel If you like it, please download a copy, you can enter £0 as the price so it's a free download!
9.
The HUGE board has been stripped and is currently acting as a coffee table in the studio. I have a new live electronica project on the go (live bass & electronics as a 2-piece) and this is my much reduced set up that I'm using for it... Shep
I posted this setup a while back and mentioned the new live project... we we did the 1st show. It was a roaring success so we decided to mix and master our favourite bits of the jams leading up to that show. All the music is improvised, the songs are made up on the spot using a set of drum loops and synths so every time we play they sound totally different. After some mix and EQ work, this is what that board sounds like in action... 10.
COG Effects Tarkin Fuzz, nuff said!
This. It rocks
11. Kiwi. The Arpeggiator, IMO is the weakest part of the pedal, and my least used part of the pedal, while it has some flexibility it is not 'fully programmable'. I have used it live on a couple of tunes and fed it some fuzz/filter synth combo's with no problem. I've done no MIDI cc work with the pedal at all though so can't comment either way, I just don't use MIDI like that. It seems pretty damn bang on for MIDI clock though, more accurate than most. Aside the arpeggiator i don't use the synth section too much. It's great, but oddly labelled... It's basically an organ simulator with some nice effects. The sounds i consider to be 'synth' are accessible in the Octave section. As for the input/guitar thing. I'm not so sure. Maybe in original conception, but since you can change the input to 'bass' &/or 'synth bass' in the menu (and I have noticed a difference to the response in doing so) I'd argue that it's been built with a range of applications in mind. Plus, one of the DSP engineers at Eventide (Russ) is a bass player, so it was designed with bass players in mind to some level. All in all I'm very happy. Some sections require very fine tuning of the wet/dry mix to get them to cut through right, but all in all, I think it's stunning.
12.
Stunning bass mate, do give me a bell if you ever decide to move it on! Take it it's tuned E-C?
It is indeed strung E-C (with a D-Tuner on the E). As for moving it on... Highly unlikely! I'll consider it if you offer me list price... but that'd make any man cry! lol
13.
I trigger samples with my feet using the Digitech JamMan Looper pedal. I load the WAV files onto the JamMan at home then trigger them live for certain songs. Great for intros and other FX during songs.
This!

15. There is so much to explain with the pedal that its hard to know where to start. There are 2 modes to use it in... One is as it was a single stomp box... It has one effect active and the 3 foot switches apply to that effect. To go to another effect you turn the knob to change setting. Each of the settings (Octave, Harmonizer, Whammy etc) have a default setting which you can set up (so one patch for each type of effect). The other mode is a bank mode where you can have upto 99 banks, each bank has 2 effects. One foot switch per effect and one to scroll to the next bank. This is what I use to perform live with. I currently use 10 presets, in 5 banks. To access the tuner you HAVE to be in the 1st mode. So I would need to swap modes (hold one footswitch for 2 seconds) then turn on the tuner (hold down 2 footswitches for 2 seconds), then undo it all. I just use a polytune mini! The octave is one of the best I've used. The fact the 2nd sub octave tracks so well is crazy. I have to say though that using the 2nd sub octave is not 'musical' on the bass... It's like the DOD Meatbox... It will clip your amp and gut you! The octave itself has 2 filters, with resonance and a blendable fuzz too. Very versatile. With the filter off, a little resonance and some depth tweaking there is certainly some OC2 mojo, BUT its much bigger, lots more LOW meaning on this setting it is boomier and dominates the mix more than the OC2 does. Using the filters gives you all sorts of classic synth bass tones. It's worth mentioning the expression can be assigned to any parameter of every patch you set up as well... So you can do soooooo much. On one of my octave settings I have it blending the fuzz from wet to dry and on another inside it to sweep the cutoff of the filter for synth sweeps. If you have any reason to be near Nottingham soon you are more than welcome to come and spend an afternoon tweaking it in the studio. Shep
16. Best pedal in the world? Really? Quite possibly... Yes! Tuner is great, though not super quick to access on stage. Octaves are HUGE. Serious bass - though you'll struggle to get the OC2 sound from anything but the OC2. Still a brilliant octave. Great bass synth noises from the adjustable filters on the octave patch, Lovely reverbs, killer chorus, easily the most advanced harmoniser in pedal form, best whammy-type pedal about and the list goes on and on. It's not a 'multi-effect' as such... But it is really. Don't expect to buy one and get the most out of it in a few weeks though. It's taken me 18 months to get it to replace half my board and I'm about 50% of the way through its hidden quirks. It's an investment... But I think it's worth more than its price tag!
17. It's that time again... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass May I present James Brown of Amptweaker. A man with a long history in the audio industry. A history which has been focused on tone since the very beginning. James's background within the audio industry has been based around developing equipment which delivers the goods for guitarists all over the world but now his passion is directed toward Amptweaker, creating pedals packed with years of industry expereince and insight. One word... TONE.
18.
Repping the subdecay I see! Great stuff!
Yeah dude!! I LOVE that filter!
19. It's been a while since I've used it but if I recal the EP2 allows more than the full sweep of the knob. As there would be part of the sweep which goes beyond the frequency range of your bass signal and so does nothing. To avoid having the last 10% of the swell do nothing I rolled back the pot a little. That does depend on where you set the minimum cutoff too on the pedal though - the higher that I set the more of the pedals swell becomes unused. I guess it's a case of suit to suit your style. I always want toe down to be different to 'not quite toe down'.
20. That's plan! And this set up have 2 less sub octave pedals than my usual set up!
21. Been a while since I posted a few pics. The HUGE board has been stripped and is currently acting as a coffee table in the studio. I have a new live electronica project on the go (live bass & electronics as a 2-piece) and this is my much reduced set up that I'm using for it... Bass -> TC Polytune Mini -> * (GigRig QuarterMaster 4 Input) * COG Effects Custom Meat Grinder Fuzz -> Subdecay Prometheus -> Eventide PitchFactor (with EB VP Jr) -> Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter (with MP-201) -> * (GigRig QuarterMaster 4 Output) * TC Nova Delay iB Mod - > Amp All housed in a Diago Showman (other than the delay) and powered by a GigRig Modeular Power Supply. There is a MIDI Splitter in the top corner too which delivers a MIDI Clock from the electronics to sync the LFO's of my MP-201 and crazy effects in the Eventide. Sounds HUGE!!! 22. Thing is the Moog is supposed to add drive. It 'can' clean up, but its analogue phat-ness is part of its design. It will always mess with your clean tone when in use (put it in a bypass loop when not in use!).
23. Yeah - I think delving into the specifics of programming the GR-55 is a technical manual waiting to happen. I imagine Gary would need a year to write that out! It's certainly an interesting bit of kit. There are some videos on YouTube that he did for Roland with the VB-99 that are quite in-depth, but even they only scratch the surface.
24. It's a BIG one... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass May I present to you the incredible Mr. Gary Willis. Hang on... Did I just say Gary Willis!? Er. Yes! Be prepared for a tour around one of the most intricate live set ups to date!
25. June 24th is the official launch date. Keep an eye on the Facebook for updates: http://www.facebook.com/patientzeroproject
