1. I miss that Fretless sooooooooo much.
2. ALL SOLD Hi folks, My pedalboard is being re-designed due to logistics issues. I've been hanging onto these as they sound amazing, but space has meant I needed to get smaller alternatives. To get hold of the last few parts of the puzzle I'm putting these up, ideally for trade on some specific bits, but will consider a sale as well... 3.
Good stuff! Although during the Tin Spirit videos I admit I was more interested in the Warwick that guy was playing.. Keep it up!
Don't worry - as a bassist, that's allowed! (I was too...)
4. New interview up! PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass I present to you Daniel Steinhardt. Dan is a tone-obsessed guitarist and the man behind TheGigRig, the company responsible for bringing you the worlds first and most powerful programmable effects switching system. Check out what he had to say about his products, his music and of course, his tone...
5. Graham, she's a stunner! The LG shape took a while to grow on me too. In a stand its a little strange, but as soon as its on the body it makes PERFECT sense. Seriously nice bass dude!
6. Current set up (minus the million effects pedals). Roscoe LG Signature V, EBS Fafner, Barefaced Big Twin T.
7. Thanks dudes!!! A little different this time... It was me being interviewed!? PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Steven Taylor (better known around these parts as Tayste_2000) of Our Innocence Lost is a fellow online forum user, blogger and a great musician. I was keen to interview Ste about his love of pedals and to quiz him on why he now uses a much reduced set up with his band. During these conversations he flipped the whole thing on it'd head and threw a pile of questions at me. While you wait for my interview with Ste, check out what I had to say...
8. Octave before and envelope after for fat analogue synth sounds!
9. A VERY overdue review of the Nova Dynamics unit coming soon!!
10. My very first 'follow-up interview'... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Much has changed with Ant's set up since my interview with him all those months ago. His band, Castrovalva, are going from strength to strength and interest in his setup has become great. With all that gigging and all his gear getting put through it's paces night after night something was sure to change! Ant was cool enough to spend a few minute discussing those changes...
11. Another vid... http://youtu.be/9nVUBrUn-PA
12. Number 3... This ones my favourite I think. http://youtu.be/9nVUBrUn-PA
13.
I was very lucky to attend a clinic with TM Stevens at London Bass Day. I had a chat with him about "his sound". I commented that for big slap guy I very was surprised not to see a compressor on his pedal board. TM Stevens replied "I AM THE COMPRESSOR, my hand controls the attack". He also showed me his hand, with a big stare. This left me thinking that my search for effects was possibly due to my inability to produce nice sounds with my hands. I've recently sold most of my effects on this forum. Today, I only allow myself two pedals (1) a compressor for slap (please don't tell TM Stevens!) and (2) an autowah. I spend a lot of my time experimenting with my right hand technique to find different sounds. I find this hugely rewarding, the same sort of fun I got from tweaking pedal knobs. We all play bass to make sounds. The sounds we have in our heads can be the result of x and y effects, hand technique, or both. I am following a more organic approach these days, using my hands and I love it. And, yes, I will buy some pedals in the future... but not now.
This is a very valid view of the discussion and I agree completely that technique can do wonders for aspects of your sounds.... However, if you or TM Stevens find a way to make your fingers sound like a Bit Crusher please make sure you let me know!!
14. I honestly don't think it can be done dude in an enclosure that small. The reason I went with Max at SFX for my custom blender is because nothing on the market did what I needed (a combination of 2 settings from the LS-2, but without me needing to turn the knob between them!) and importantly, 2 separate volume knobs!
15. Alec, A few questions... How do you have it connected? Are you using both outputs in an interesting way, or just the effected output in a traditional manner? What power supply are you using? An official Digitech one? When you get this 'low gurgle' does changing the setting (via the knob) for the position of the expression pedal change anything? Shep
16. The Boss ODB-3 is great for the buyer on a budget. You can pick one up for £50 or less 2nd hand on BC or eBay and works great for the money. Ultimately you get what you pay for and many OD and Fuzz pedals at that price are limited on either features, tone or build quality, but as a stop gap keep your eyes on the Effects for sale forum and buy 2nd hand!
17. Will do dude. Thanks for the PM too... Video number 2! http://youtu.be/lhhw4q5f1C0
18. Thanks dude! You're very very kind. If I can get half the success of Chris then i'll be a happy man. Him scoring the Alex Clare tour made me just a tad jealous! Glad you like the vid! That low end is courtesy of the parallel octave down (Octamizer with the filter rolled back) I run along side all the noisy stuff We have another video from that same jam coming out this weekend and then hopefully one a week for the next month I also saw Roni Size and was a little unimpressed. I saw Roots Manuva and his bass sound (provided by electric bass) was pretty massive. I love to score a gig like that! Lee's already talking about us doing a D&B festival in Malta next year that he's been asked to play at... That'd be a nice way to start the live shows! He's a very talented man with a wicked sounding snare, but getting him to count in 4 or think about music like a drummer is a bloody mission. He's like a loose cannon! Lololol. I have another (3rd, and unless something massive comes along, final for 2013) project that I'll be announcing soon. It's a 2-piece project with a Canadian producer and beat writer. Programmed beats from Canada, all live bass and noise from me and then guest MC's from UK, USA and everywhere else we can branch out. A real international collaboration. We're working on a 4 track at the mo, 2 tracks done and with MC's and 2 beats finished waiting for my bass parts. That record should be the stop gap as we put a full length out at the end of next year. He's signed to a HipHop label in the US and they have agreed to put the record out already so we're very excited about that.
19. Hey folks, This little vid is the first of a few from the same session. It's an improvised track as part of a new project I'm doing... not happy that my 2-piece Drum & Bass project isn't small enough I thought I'd replace the drum kit with a beatboxer! Hope you like it: This idea came about after seeing Lee live a while back and realising I'd never seen a band using a beatboxer in place of a drummer so we got together for a jam and this was the results. New territory for us both so any feedback is much appreciated. More videos to come over the next few weeks. Fingers crossed we'll be taking this live in the new year. If you like it, then 'like' it - The Beat Consortium on Facebook
20. Told ya' it was coming
21. Some new board in action footage... this time from my new project!! http://youtu.be/7m8jW-J6seQ Like us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheBeatConsortium Appreciate any feedback on the stuff as well. It's all improvised and we aim to take it live in the new year.
22. I have another for you! PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Taylor Livingston is the man behind Iron Ether. Iron Ether have made a real splash in the world of effects, creating gorgeous etched pedals that sound absolutely stunning. Taylor tackles the job of creating pedals by filling holes left by other pedal manufacturers and giving his pedals unique twists and features... Truly innovative signal processors!
23. Cool. Keep me posted on developments! Any plans to record with it/capture any live footage soon?
24.
I recently reduced to the max: I'm still exploring the possibilities and will do for quite some time, but this really opens a new world of sounds. love it!
Very interested in the compact GR MIDI unit... Let me know how you get on!
25. Moved to sale forum (you posted in the discussion forum!). Thanks Shep
