I have NEVER played in Oxford in my life... odd that. 13 years of playing in bands and I've never played in Oxford! lol We are aiming to have a much more geographical spread for gigging come the end of this year/start of next so I'll keep you posted. We have quite a local reputation now thanks to our 'open mic' approach - basically there is a mic onstage offered to any vocalist or MC who wants to freestyle and improvise with us. It started off with one cool MC showing up etc. and now we play shows and the stage ends up like this... http://youtu.be/B9iT3KW4fWI We just play the tunes and shift the structure to suit whats happening and MC's just work the crowd. We still play instrumental, but in Nottingham it's hard to not have MC's show up now! lol. For an idea of out live sound, here is a live recording we have - straight off the desk: http://ourhelicalmind.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-dogstock-2012 There are links in the album information to see the footage form the show as well. I'll let everyone when we get more UK dates sorted! -
I do know a really good DJ actually, i'll see him next week so will mention it. He does scratching on proper decks but it controls samples on his laptop somehow - pretty cool.
Wicked mate. Hook it up!
Do you ever play up here Shep? Know it's not exactly far but thought I'd ask anyway!
We don't really have any contacts with bands, DJ's or mates in Sheffield so are completely unaware of the electronica scene or other acts to get on with. It you can put us in touch with a promoter/organsier or help get something booked then we'll be there! -

Currently we have transport issues so bringing an MC or 9 is unlikely (getting us there will be a challenge)... But maybe. Duke01 is always game for a road trip. If you know any local talent though please invite them along. I think the Great Scott guys are fairly local so ill ask them too. -

Yes I do. But for future videos. This is our first 'real' video (one that we didn't shoot ourselves with camcorders and a 50p budget) and the thing we have always struggled with is people 'getting' what we do. We have never played a show and not had the promoter or organiser ask us back or sing our praise, and for that I'm really proud... But roughly 80% (or more) of enquiries we send out get met with, "we have DJ's for that kinda stuff, not sure how it would work with a live band" etc etc... As places are not keen to take risks these days we've had a few doors shut before they have opened. We have been lucky enough to have 2 such promotors make the effort to come and see us play other shows, both apologised for being narrow sighted and both booked us for shows after seeing us live. Both also commented that if we could display ourselves with a powerful tune in a video that showed we were not only a real live act but use gear in a way that gets people asking questions about us that they would not of hesitated to book us earlier. This is that 'door opener'. Every show without fail we get collared packing away with people asking about the gear, the chopper and trash former cymbals, my Moogs, what we have in our headphones etc etc. seems LOTS of people are gear-freaks and we wanted to push that. It went out late Sunday night and we have had 5 enquiries about gigs (via email) already, all offering far more money than we would usually charge... So I'm VERY happy with the results. We have an idea for a rather abstract and interesting video which we 'almost' went with for this one, but I'm glad we held it back. Rest assured next time we'll go all out! -
Some great sounds but it's not really a "Music Vid", more of an advert for the brands you use. Which is ok, by the way.
Maybe. The editor did cut in a few more actual brand 'names' than expected... But the brief was to show we perform live, using lots of gear and to show us and gear we use. Plus it's a video. And it has music in it. So in my book, that's a music video -
Shep, your ear for tone is beyond good. That is some of the best sounding bass synth stuff i've ever heard, smooth yet very defined and clear. The drums around the 2:40 mark remind me quite a bit of Firestarter by The Prodigy, which isn't a bad thing, and i like the simplicity of the video, it works well with the track and overall feel. Liam
Thanks dude! Very kind comments! You'll make me blush. I've spent ALOT of time laying sounds to create different textures and using modulations with very abrasive sounds to create real synth like textures. This tune has quite a lot going off but the core sound is down to 3 pedals plus an octave down in parallel (plus a few small extras ). The drums reference is one I had not heard myself... but not you've mentioned it thats going to stick in my heard!! There was a track from our first EP (called 'Neon Tangerine') that lots of people compared to The Prodigy. I consider that a pretty big compliment The aim of the video was to battle something we have a problem with - people not 'getting it' until they see it. We get lots of comments from promoters like "we have DJ's to do that stuff", but once they see us live everyone really digs it. Hopefully this will open more peoples eyes! This single is particularly good for it as it sounds exactly the same when we play it live as nothing was added, layered or overdubbed in the studio. One take wonders (we 6 or 7 takes to get one bang on... but a 'single' take start to finish ). -
Holy **** this is GREAT! Very impressive and just my cup of tea. Amazing how you create that sound. I assume it's some kind of MIDI voodoo and the fact you have a pedalboard the size of Nebraska?! Awesome stuff. Your drummer is super-tight too. I know I missed you guys last time you played near Manchester, but give us a shout next time you're in the neighbourhood as I'd be really keen to see you live. Enjoy the tour!
Thank you dude! Appreciate it. Our big selling point is that we do this stuff in an analog (ish) fashion so all our stuff is recorded exactly as we play it live with no over dubs. We use no loops, samplers, sequencers and the only midi involved is a time clock to make my tremolos run in time with the track speed. All the sounds are created from drums and bass guitar though effects pedals... So it's from lots an lots of time playing with pedals creating sounds and textures! Really glad you like it! Am hoping to be back in Bolton before the end of the year... Maybe Manchester too! -
superb Shep. Love the track. You are an inspiration mate.
Thank you dude. Thats a compliment of the highest caliber!
Really cool! Liked it! Good to hear something different. Them pedals must have cost a few pence and i thought Alice Cooper was drumming til it when close up. Good drummer too. I have a friend who is in a group that's similar but totally different. Just drums, gtrs and lots of pedals but they are dance pop. Check em out at www.hotbeatrepeat.co.uk. Hope you get more comments than the track i recently put on this forum! ha ha But once again.. really good...class!
There is a couple of pence in my pedal set up... Thanks for the kind words... I'll add that link to tomorrows playlist as well! Always interested to hear electronic-styled music done on real instruments!! Tom (drummer) is badass and would prob appreciate the Alice Cooper comment!!
Great video Shep! Been a while since I posted my pedalboard... Check it out in our new music vid!!! http://youtu.be/hG940DEAazQ -
I've been busy!! This evening I (we) have released a new video. I've been a musician for 13 years and this is the 1st thing I have a real sense of pride over. Most folks know I have a mild obsession for effects pedals and that the music I play is effects heavy. My band has done well on the local scene but struggled to branch out as people just don't 'get it' until they see it. Due to this, a year ago we set out to write a track which was characteristically 'us' but REALLY pushed the boundaries of what we could perform live in our usual style (no samples, loops, sequencers, laptops, keyboard synths etc) - Something that could be recorded live and then performed live and sound identical with no over dubs in the studio. We also set to record a video which was professional but also suited the track and showed off the live aspect of what we did. The track we produced is called Synthetiks... (please, please, please listen with headphone or on a stereo - theres lots happening below the frequency response of laptop speakers!). That track was recorded with a single drum take and a single bass take and then the video was done over night in the studio. We play that tune live exactly like that and everything you hear that is not a drum beat is from myself. The thing that makes me feel really proud about it is that we have been able to put together an 11 track album (digital pre orders here - http://ourhelicalmin...ks-the-versions, released 15th) which contains that tune plus 10 re-workings of the tune all done by musicians and producers we really love and respect. People that were excited to take time out of their schedules to produce a new track inspired by the music we had written. The contributors run as far an wide as Waatu (Canadian HipHop producer) to Men Imitating Machines (Australian live Dubstep duo) to Djevara (London prog-noise crew) to Basschat's very own Sibob!!! (and loads more as well!). I always dreamt of creating a truly international collaboration and finally at the age of 30, I have We are following this up with a 10 day European tour starting on the 19th (so I'll be away for 10 days from then) and it looks like we have a few Electronica-based clinics coming up at colleges and the like later this year. Exciting times. I hope you like the track. Thanks (as always) to the BC crew for being so awesome, and to Si for his hard work on contributing to the record.

More pedal mayhem... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Ben (or Benjamin) also uses the name Aen amongst others. When asked which name should be used here he simply replied, "I am known by many names, and all of these are false!" Ben is the man behind Dwarfcraft Devices, a company making a serious name in creating some of the noisiest and most 'off-the-wall' effects pedals in the world. Dwarfcraft's dirt and synthy/glitch devices have been finding homes on more and more artist's pedal boards than you can shake a stick at and once you hear some of the toys on offer it's easy to see why! -
Im happy...but how/why has this pedal arrangement worked?
pantherairsoft replied to Mod_Machine's topic in Effects
Absolutely. No one way is right. You have to try every combination before you settle on an order. It's not just how one effect sounds ran into another, but also how different effects sound with a different number of buffers before/after them. Your chorus may now not be suffering from impedance issues as you buffered pedals have evened it out just right for the pedal/bass combination. -
