1.
This I need to see..
All in good time! Next one will be an Australian!
 2.
If you get Mr. Chancellor, just remember to ask him to explain all of his signal chain..
Don't worry about that! That said... I have one interview in the pipeline with someone who's set up at least doubles Justin's!?!?
Interview with Juan is the best one yet. Great work as always.
Thanks dude. High praise!
 3.
ok, but where can you go from here ?
Well the plan isn't to interview bigger and bigger artists. It's to interview artists with interesting and complex effects set ups. I have some awesome stuff in the pipeline at the mo, some of which folks will never of heard of - but mega interesting all the same. I will keep trying to track down Justin Chancellor though
 4. How about a sprinkling of Juan Alderete for the weekend... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass I'm not sure Juan really needs an introduction... But just in case... Juan is the long time effects champion and bass player with Big Sir, Racer X & The Mars Volta to name but a few, Juan has scored his name among the bass elite during his varied career. Always willing to share his knowledge and experience, Juan was cool enough to answer some questions about his gear and how he uses it...
 5. Questions - 1. Do you just use a single channel of all the rack gear other than the ISP or are both channels in use on some of the units? 2. You run everything AFTER the amp!? Sorry of I'm being a tab dumb here... By why? Surely the amp want to be the last thing before going onto the canb!? Just try they exact wiring set up have but put the amp last and see what the results are. Shep
 6.
love it...I'll have a debenmans Version 5 super envelope phaser filter plz Good thinking Shep, thanks Opened up the GS and over on the left of the pcb board is written GATE, so guess it's not a huge job (but I dont build pedals ). Shep is your gate on a switch or footswitch? Emiled Ry for prices, depending on Ry's reply I'll either send back to him or I'll bite the bullet and order a new GS and learn about patience...and put the GS up for sale but for the moment I will put this on HOLD until I've spoke to Ry. Will reply to PM's now thanks Chris
Mine is 'always on' It was build to be purely a gated fuzz. There is a knob that controls how gated which goes from 'so gated the pedal makes no noise' to 'pretty gated'. Typically he makes them with a footswitch, though I'm sure he can do it with a flick switch for you.
 7. Ry will add a gate to it for you I bet! My GS has an always on gate and it's awesome!
 8.
A decent contract solicitor can read and explain the small print for you, if your that lucky, hell you could certainy afford to see one!
That couldn't be further from the truth for most musicians trying to make a living playing original material and looking to get better distribution etc for their music. Most of them don't have 2p to rub together until a few contracts have been signed! At £100+ each time to read over a contract, solicitors are not a great option, but if the MU will do it for free without every band member needing to be a member then you can have them check over everything for piece of mind without worry. The rest of the MU's stuff does not appeal to me at at all - and your experience reinforces my thoughts about what I have read.
 9.
Instrument insurance isn't worth anything. I have looked into it and asked a lot of questions to potential insurers. Turns out that apart from accidental damage the instruments aren't insured against much - certainly not from being nicked from the car or stage - now heres the killer bit - unless supervised What does that mean? So, if you are watching your instrument and someone nicks it then you can make a claim! FFS what is the point in that. I'd rather sic my dog on the thieving bugger or twat em with a mic stand.
I insured 2 Roscoe Basses for £3k each on top of my contents insurance. I have it from the person on the phone AND in writing that they are covered for theft and accidental damage in my property and ANY other locked/secured property (this was important for when they stay at my studio) in the UK. This cost £2 a month on top of my contents with the AA. To insure them in a vehicle was going to cost a silly amount though.
I'm not sure Shep, but give 'em a bell - they really are a friendly bunch! I renewed the other day and had a great chat for waaaay longer than necessary to sort my subscription out!
I emailed them but got a strange answer which wast really an answer. Something along the lines of 'why would members of you band possibly want to exist without being a member'. My Drummer, who is a member, called and asked. The lady said she had no idea and would call him back. That was a week ago. Thought I'd check here in case anyone had used that service. Shep
 10.
That looks fun Simwells. What's the pink one? I can't spot a fuzz on there, is that what it is, or do you let your SuperSynth cover your square wave needs?
No fuzz!? Geiger Counter for the win!!! More fuzz, distortion, overdrive & bit crushing than any man could need!
 11. A bit of thread resurrection here... To those of you who are long time members can you answer the following? I'm particularly interested in the legal support side of stuff that the MU can offer, particularly where they say that they will check contracts etc for you. So If I were to receive and complete a recording/distribution contract etc, the MU would double check over the contract before I send it to ensure I haven't missed something and that someone isn't trying to shaft me - Thats my understanding. What I want to know is, that if the contract includes multiple people, for example a band which I am a part of, would the MU still offer this service to me if I was the only person named on the contract that was a member, or would every member of the band named on the contract need to be an MU member before they would help out? Cheers folks! Shep
 12.
' timestamp='1346259280' post='1787161'] Hey Shep great article about pitch based effects! What's your thoughts on the now discontinued Boss PS3? I've just acquired one myself loving it so far, Lots of options and a lush chorus! You got me gassing for an oc2!
Hey dude, glad you enjoyed it. A guitarist friend of mine owns a PS3 (pedal, not games console!) and I really like it. I've had a good play on bass and it ticks the right boxes. I've always liked the Boss Pitch effects, though oddly I've always settled on owning other companies versions.
is this just for the tour your doing soon or are you properly going back to basic's then? and like jhunter said above a really good bit on pitch shifting dude!
I'm keeping the big board if thats what you mean. 2 pedals went (Meatbox and Noisebox) but the main board is still there. Logistically my full set up is a nightmare - it weighs so much it's a struggle for 2 people and due to size it won't go in many vehicles. I expect 'bigger' gigs, rehearsals and recording will be done on the large set up still. What I wanted was a lighter weight set up that can reproduce the songs that I play on the big board (be it with different tones/sounds) - something that fits easily in any car and can be carried with one hand for smaller local shows. The idea is to have a set up that fits in a Diago Showman. So far using just the M13 and 2 Line 6 expression pedals I've been able to 'recreate' the core of all our commonly played tracks, though 2 of them have had to have some sounds sacrificed. The tunes sound very different, but I can recreate te textures, layers and feels fine. I obviously prefer the time of the bigger cool effects, but I'm it sure the audience will be that bothered. I'll likely be using 1 or 2 extras with the M13 - the Aggie and loop mixer for my sub and likely the Geiger counter as its the tunes that use the GC that I'm needing to use 2 patchs at once on the M13 to get a sound that's close. If I can live with the M9 expression pedals I can get those 3 units in a Showman board easy - If I use the MP-201 then I'll not fit the GC. We shall see!
 13.
Due to the lack of responses, you are clearly no longer cool
I've known that for a while...
 14. I have the same problem (Just checked now). I'll add it to the tech list and get someone to look into it!
 15.
Agreed, but is this really likely to be a problem in practice? Who would leave negative feedback if a buyer (say) didn't turn up but called to explain why with a genuinely good reason. But even if they did, the buyer could reply to the negative feedback explaining the reasons. Again, both sides to the story could be posted in the feedback.
This is the main problem. It's always been a BC policy to say that if you have an issue with another member it should be dealt with by PM and not voiced as public argument. This tends to end with both people setting their differences, or a moderator being notified of X, Y or Z. I would hope the same is true after transactions and if someone wasted your time you'd find out why in private. If you were unhappy with the response posting negative feedback is not going to help as you already know their side of the 'argument' and disagreed with it enough to leave negative feedback! If a situation was enough for most people to feel negative feedback needs to be left it means they had a bad experience and both sides presenting their sides of the story on a public forum will result in nothing but an argument. Neither side will see the others point of view and the feedback forum will become a bigger battleground than Off Topic! As a public discussion forum that does not have advanced software or a workforce to police a set system (lke eBay for example) the current process has to be subject to some specific rules and this is one that so has has shown that if it is not adhered to more problems occur (as it's been mentioned feedback in the past over non-transactions etc. has resulted in serious fall outs).
 16. This is what me and TaySte were playin around with this afternoon... Impressive results!
 17.
Nobody's mentioned the Eventide Pitchfactor... Just wondering how it stacks up against those listed above.
It blows the socks off all of them and nails pretty much every tone other than that famous OC2 -1 octave sound. Buying a Pitchfactor to be just an Octave pedal is however a tad OTT! It's really stunning but does so much it could replace a large part of many pedal boards... And costs a bomb!
 18. It's been far too long coming... but here is a new instalment of my Signal Chain BASSics series. This time around it's discussing my obsession - pitch effects! Shep on Bass - Signal Chain BASSics, Part VIII: Pitch Effects It's been a long time since I published part VII as the interviews I've been doing have taken up so much time. I fully intend to get back on the ball with these though, along with a pile of pedal demos.
 19. The 'out' socket was to allow you to run a daisy chain or link cable from one pedal when you were using a regular single power supply rather than one designed to have a daisy chain plugged into it. Either way (a daisy on the power supply or from the pedal) will get you the same results. Be wary of using a daisy chain other a supply that does not offer much mA/juice for your pedals or that is not designed for a daisy chain - while it may 'work', it may also get hot/noisy. As for your patching - they should all work together... I would say something is not connected correctly. Everything powered up? Volumes up? Changed cables? Double checked correct ins/outs being used etc? Shep
 20. I understand it's the same engine as the a whammy DT (without the detune etc). If so, it works very well with bass (I had a DT for ages). There is a cut in the super highs which you wouldn't notice in most cases unless you run the whammy AFTER dirt pedals (which add high end harmonics) and have a tweeter on your cab. Running it after dirt is not recommended by Digitech anyway, but in this rare combination you hear a drop in highs when you turn it on. In all other situations it's pretty awesome and the tracking was pretty good all over the bass.
 21. LS-2 is a swiss army knife of pedals. Seriously good for it's money and size. Perfect for what you need plus a million other tasks as well! Fpr the price you can pick one up 2nd hand (£40ish) you can't go wrong.
 22.
Les Claypool / Primus Paul D'Amour / Tool [Opiate/Undertow] Geezer Butler / Black Sabbath Chris Wolstenholme / Muse Paul McCartney / Beatles Justin Chancellor / Tool [Everything after Undertow] Flea / Red Hot Chili Peppers John Davis / Nerve George Porter Jr. / Funky Meters Shep / Our Helical Mind
I just googled my band to see if anyone was slagging us off and found this post!! Dude, if I'm in your top 10 bassists of all time I'm very honoured... but think you need to stop smoking crack I barely even get the title of bass player... I do more with my feet! Ha...
 23.
Is that a 2 band EQ? Oh, and when will we see this "ramp" we've heard so much about?...
It's a 3 band Bartolini NTMB. Volume, Pan, Mids (with push pull for 2 centre freq's) and a stacked bass/treble knob. The pups are Roscoe spec'd Bart's (only available on Roscoes). A small hole will be drilled shortly to add an active passive switch that I have requested as I prefer a switch to push/pull knobs. As for the ramp - very soon I'm hoping!
 24. Yeah guys. I'm super happy with how it's looking. That fretboard is still to be oiled so it'll darken slightly and grain should pop. Lookin forward to seeing the Maple/Purple Heart 7-piece neck on the other side!
