End of day one progress of the great pedal board rebuild... The layout (This took ages to settle on)... Tomorrow, 9am, patch cabling begins Shep -

Shep on Bass - Interviews about effects!

Anyone ever heard of Justin Meldal-Johnsen? PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Justin Meldal-Johnsen is a serious bass heavy weight. He is responsible for recording, touring and providing the low end for such massive acts as Nine Inch Nails, Beck & Gnarls Barkley. In the world of bass players he is the kind of name that many many players aspire to be. He is also a serious pedal-head! I was lucky enough to steal 15 minutes of his precious time to get some answers over his effects, gear and live set up. -
Whereabouts are you playing in Bolton? I might head down if i can. Liam
Sorry dude - I meant 'the closest to Manchester we have been is Bolton'. The live EP on our Bandcamp was recorded at a mini festival in Bolton a short while ago. We should be heading back in a couple of months though so I'll keep you posted! -
Looks like a real good job mate, if your ever playing around Manchester i'll be there!
Thanks dude. Closest we've got sonar is Bolton, though I'm hoping to hook up a gig with TheBrokenDoor again soon and Manchester is my target (maybe with From The Kites Of San Quentin...)? I'll keep you posted! -
I've played in garages for 99% of my musical career, it won't be that hard for me.
Good call! You sound perfect for the job! -
OC2 as OC3 sound very different. The OC3 sounds closest on the -2 Octave (Monophonic) Mode... Just don't actually use the -2 Octave knob. That will get ge you as close as the pedal can get to it... But best bet would me to get an OC2!
Nice one Sheps! You didn't need my Roscoe after all!!!
Thi isn't the actual video - this was a warm up of ideas that turned into a video itself! We are shooting a video for our new single with a video producer and some Gucci equipment on the 10-12th but I have managed to obtain a Rosoce to use for the shoot with minimal logistics involved in getting it here! Appreciate the offer you made to borrow yours for it though dude.

I took all the measurements at the studio, made the little feet and the plinth at home and prayed I'd got the measurements right... Thankfully it fits with about 1mm spare! I am clearly a power tool god! We're hitting Europe on touted in a few months so I'm going for 'bomb proof' -
Very interesting, Shep... but I think you should probably get some more pedals - just to be on the safe side. .
It may not surprise to you know that I've had a clear out and these are the ones that are left... My stripped down ergonomic board so to speak I've done some slight adjustments as well... Stripped the board, removed all old Velcro and scrubbed it clean, then removed the foam on the base (most of)... I've made some wooden 'feet' for the top tier to sit on as well as it used to sit on foam which, while OK, has squished a little meaning there was a little movement... I also put some serious work in making this plinth for the whole front row. Every pedal was on a different size riser to lift it over the lip and to make things more accessible, so instead I made a single one which is covered with 'Veltex' material (which is a fabric cover made by Velcro which acts like the soft side of Velcro). I'm pretty chuffed by it... So it should all work a little like this...
Great video and track. Did you record this track in a studio in the Lady Bay area? My mate Paul co-owns a studio there and he talked about 'a bass and drum outfit where the bass player played a seven string plank (he's not good at Maths) and a Barefaced cab' - I thought of you! Anyway, I'd like to catch you live sometime.
Hey dude, Thanks! Yes - we've done all our studio recordings with Johnny & Paul @ Moot. Awesome guys. Have known them since they were at Pristine, maybe 10 years. Live - 17th Aug at the Maze!
I've grown to like the shape of the LG. I'm not sure what it'd be like to wear, but I love the quirkiness of it, kinda like the Thumb Bass. Shep, once you've got this in your sweaty mitts, would you take some snaps of it on so we can see the advantages of the shape for us little fellas? Cheers, Eude
Of course dude...

Well, Theres plenty of live footage out there of us playing already, but we decided that as we are releasing a new single/release in October we'd work towards a high quality professional music video as well, which we are shooting next month. Very excited. In the build up to doing so we met up with a friend who has more audio visual gear than I do effects pedals and shot some angles/played with lights etc so we could get an idea of what close up shots will and won't work when we come to working with pro gear and have a time (and financial budget) to stick to. The end result is something we are quite happy with and so it has become out 1st official music video, for the track 'BigDug' off our 'analogftw' EP. Made with a few HD Camcorders, some disco lights, lots of tea and a few Cheese & Ham toasties... enjoy! (Watch in HD where possible!) Shep on Bass - Interviews about effects!
Quite! I really liked the part about pedals having "character". I find this to be especially true with old digital effects like the Whammy. I think I need to get my hands on that tube pedal though.. This has inspired me to talk to this guy. I might just need to work at WMD..
He's a top dude and super helpful. I understand working at WMD means working in Will's garage! -
I didn't realise the LG qualified as a singlecut?
No... Sorry if I didn't phrase it well. I meant that the design of the LG is always a love/hate thing. Just like the design of singlcuts are often considered love/hate things.
-
Which ever is on the right (I think centery?) Looks nicest too me, the one on the left looks like it's been squashed to me. But that's just me
Yeah, The Century (right) is the most 'traditional' (ish) of them all. and sits furthest to the right as well (bringing the 1st fret closer to you but moving the bridge pick up slightly further away if that make sense). The LG pushes the 1st fret further away (a bit like a Warwick Thumb) but brings the bridge closer into your body... my shorter scale neck should allow me to take advantage of both aspects. The LG does look squashed and I think, much like singlecuts, that the LG design will always be a love/hate thing. the LG looks far more normal when its on a strap being played though! The SKB has the widest lower horn 'access', though there isn't much between them.
-
Such a gorgeous shape! I much prefer the LG shape over the Century. Can't wait to see some pics once it's finished! Truckstop
The shape is interesting, the ergonomics change an awful lot between the 2 (and the SKB shape fits the space between them). The biggest change is on the strap as the top horn lengths are VERY different and shifts the bass quite a bit, theres about 1 fret between each of them, so the LG top horn comes as far as the 14th fret, the Century around the 12th. Amazing how tiny changes make huge differences in feel and balance. Shep
about the gig rig PSU in general - it supplies less power and costs more than the Godlyke Powerall right?
No. The Powerall provides 2000mA and the Generator provides 5000mA - So the GigRig has two and half time the juice. I used to use the Godlyke but I moved to a Diago powerstation as I have some noise problems with it when using my Moogerfoogers even with virtual batteries. The Diago was very good but I needed much more juice so moved up to the Generator. As for cost - Yes, the Generator costs more than the Godlyke, but in my experience you get what you pay for. if you are only powering half a dozen pedals and none of them a re 'promlematic' then the Godlyke is a great choice! Shep

I'm told Isolators are shipping on Monday. Hopefully mine will arrive on Tuesday :-) With regards to the comment about them being cheaper than 2 VB's - yes, BUT the VB does much more than just isolate as it is an actual battery simulator and delivers current flow int he same was as a battery. Some pedals respond very differently with a battery than they do with a power supply - particularly old fuzz pedals that always go noisy and (some) sound harsher when a power supply is used - even a dedicated one. The Isolator will deliver clean direct isolated power so those pedals that really want a battery to sound their best will still need a VB. I expect this won't affect many folks though as battery fussy pedals are few and far between these days. Worth pointing out though! Either way this is looking like it'll be an awesome bit of kit.
