Shep on Bass - Interviews about effects!
pantherairsoft replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Effects
Another! PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Nathan Navarro's name goes hand in hand with the Source Audio Hot Hand Controller. A pioneer in Dubstep bass, but from a hard rock/metal background, he is the bass player for Pinn Panelle amongst other projects and is a name on the lips of many people involved in the world of live electronica. Enjoy! Shep -
Hey, So we played a killer little festival last month in Bolton called Dogstock. It was a wicked weekend. A chap there was able to record the set post desk for us and get us the WAV's - After lots and lots of mixing volume levels (it was post desk so things went up and down as the sliders were moved). We have it balanced right. Quick master and here we go. We feel it's the best our actual on stage sound has ever been captured so we thought we'd put it out. For those that don't know who Our Helical Mind are, we play live breakbeat, drum & bass, hiphop, dubstep and funk grooves using an acoustic drum kit, bass guitar and a pile of analogue effects pedals. No sequencers, samplers, laptops etc etc. The performance features 2 MC's that we know, though the set is not rehearsed in any way and all the vocals are freestyled. Anyway... I hope some folks enjoy it. http://ourhelicalmind.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-dogstock-2012

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!

I bet your amp loves you for restricting it's airflow! :-) Looking pretty awesome dude. My band dropped a live EP today. It's best live recording we have ever had and captures what we actually sound like really really well. Throughout the 6 track set I use every single unit on the board with the exception of the Freqbox so check out a few of my lovely sounds. It's bass > board > Genz Streamliner 900 > Barefaced Big Twin being recorded with a blend of a Mic and a DI... Plus the Big Twin is so loud that you hear a little bit in every vocal and drum mic too - Just how I like it!!! http://ourhelicalmind.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-dogstock-2012 -
You do realise you're going to be walking around cradling it, whispering softly under your breath 'my preciousssss' don't you?
Darkstrike on TalkBass pointed out that it looks like the Eye of Sauron between the neck and neck pickup. He's not wrong either!

Thanks dudes! Just had 3 more back from guys as well so plenty more to come over the next few months! -
Have you tried a different daisy chain cable (not the supply, just the cable). Some cheapens are not great - I'm not saying its the cause, but it could be! Make sure you don't power much more than 1amp with a daisy chain either as they tend to get noisy even when te supplies can handle more (IME only this is...) I have one I can lend you if you want to try. I Coul also lend you a GigRig distributor to power the pedals off from your power supply - that would deduce for sure if it's the supply. Has it always been noisy or has it got worse? Just wondering if a power surge or similar damage it at some point? Those harley Benton ones seem very good for the money if you are in a budget.

Very very different. Regulated and filtered is what 99% of professional power supplies do - to remove mains hum and interference and to ensure the output only gives the pedals what the pedal asks for. A supply, for example the Diago Powerstation uses this technology, but as it uses a daisy chain and only has one output there is the chance that interference can appear later in the chain of outputs, caused by the power lines picking it up rather than the supply itself. It's rare, but can happen. Artec are basically making the claim that every output has this protection as they all come from the brick itselt. In practice I doubt you would notice a difference. Isolation uses a circuit to close the ground so no common ground is shared. It means the pedal it's powering thinks it is powered by a stand alone power supply and is not having to share a power source with any other pedal. In many cases this makes no difference at all. Some pedals however (Moogerfoogers for example) will just not play ball without an isolated supply and either will not power up, lower the noise floor of the signal chain or whine like a b**ch! Can I ask why you need/think you need isolated outputs? I only ask this as quite often people try pedals on a multi supply and they don't play ball and think this is because they require isolation, however in over 50% of cases (IME) it's actually because they are not getting enough juice! Most daisy chain supplies will not output large amounts of mA/draw per output, even some pedals with multiple outs (like the Artec) are limited to 100mA per output - this sounds like a lot and often far more than the manufacturers state is needed, but if you look at the dedicated power supply that it works fine with/the manufacturer supply they are often over double the required mA as that headroom makes the pedals happy. Since I moved to a GigRig supply using the distributors (that are not limited in anyway per output, unlike a daisy chain) I found 4 pedals that I thought required isolating, actually just needed more power than the daisy chain could supply and they now work perfectly off the distributor. Anyway... I've rambled on - Why do you need isolation?

From the official website - http://artecsound.com/effect/index.html If they don't say it's isolated then it isn't!
Ooh that reminds me, I pretty much hate the Boss CEB-3, but my EBS died some months back. Anyone have any bass chorus tips?
get another Unichorus. It is a great pedal! The Analogman Chorus is lovely too. I use the Moog Clusterflux which is seriously expensive and serious overkill for most... before that I was always very happy with the EBS! -

It was bought to my attention that as this thread gets longer it may become harder to find the links to the interviews etc... So I have updated the opening post with all the links and each time a new interview is published in the thread I will add the link to opening post for the purpose of quick reference. Shep -
Hi Matt, You need to state a price. As in im selling this for X amount. We don't do offers and auctions here. It may be on eBay in an auction style, but of you want to advertise them here you must state a specific price. Link to the guidelines is in my signature below or at the top of the forum if you need more info. Thanks Shep

Matt, If you want to advertise anything here you need to state a price as per the sale forum guidelines. Please state a price for these ASAP or we'll remove the ad. The eBay forum is for discussing interesting finds and bargains etc found on eBay. If you want to sell and advertise you are selling then we ask people support the community by listing items here and provide an asking price and provide photos and a description of the condition rather than linking to an eBay auction. Cheers Shep

Time for some glitchy, ambient craziness! PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass Luke Bhatia is a guitarist who plays everything from the bass lines up and is the man behind the noise with Manchester favorites, From The Kites of San Quentin. The Kites' have a made a real name for themselves on the the Electronica scene over recent years playing a signature combination of haunting ambience, solid grooves and well layered sound textures. They perform (generally) as a 3-piece combinations of Guitar, electronics & vocal yet have a full sound comparable to many a 4 or 5 piece Electronica act. -
Just had a read through sheps blog and found it really interesting , new to the whole effects thing myself too !
Thank you dude - Means a lot. I'm working on the next Signal Chain BASSics post at the mo! As long as people find it interesting/useful then I'll keep writing. To the OP - I can only mirror what everyone else has said. I'd stick with the multi effects until you have a really clear picture of what sounds you like and what sounds you have little use for and then when you have that, stick with it a little longer until you know what characteristics of the sounds you love are important to you - So if you decide you REALLY need an Overdrive, think about what tonal properties the OD you like has so you can make a sensible decision about what controls/characteristics the pedals you buy in the future have. Also worth noting that some multi units have far simpler and more instinctive control set ups and so a 'better' multi unit may be the way to go if you decide you actually like a bit of everything.
