1.
If only I could get a clone or something.. Hmm.
Looked into it myself - part of the circuit/chip set is no longer made and folks can't find them - I assume why he stopped making them. Bugbrand still do a bug crusher, but it's more of a desktop unit than a pedal. I played with one and they are great sounding. I have a FrantaBit on the way now as IMHO it's the best bitcrusher available on the market today (The Geiger Counter is amazing, but is a distortion pedals with elements of bit crushing - as a pure crusher, the FrantBit is very special). If you can get a BugCrusher - don't ever sell it on!
2. Very rare these days. Not made anymore and seem they literally never come up for sale. Iron Ether Frantabit is the closest sounding I've heard recently.
3. The Xero makes sense... The high pass has the same controls as the low pass, but rather than taking everything out of the highs and allowing sub tones that swell up... It takes all the bass out, which I imagine sounds lo-fi and would allow swells down from super high tweeter sparkle into the sub. The crazy box - all I know is it's a square wave pedal - there are bits in the jams on the new Nerve live albums that I know are not coming from his other stuff and recognise the sound as distinctively square wave sonassume that's it. I asked Taylor at IE about it but he said it was the only one he made and Johns ha it so long he can't remember exactly how it worked... A new modern mystery of the world!
4. Cheers Si. Johns über cool set up is a wicked representation I what you can do with pretty much 50% of what I use. Man we need a synth player! Lol
5. Thanks as always to everyone for taking the time to read it. If you can share the link on social networking or other forums you all use it would be very much appreciated! Thanks again everyone
6. Oh, OK then... what about... PLEASE BE AWARE - MY WEBSITE IS NOW CLOSED. THE INTERVIEWS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE -> http://simonpoulton.....com/sheponbass I really don't think John needs much of an introduction around these parts. Bunker Studios in NYC & Nerve. Nuff' said? Thought so... Enjoy! Shep
7. I've played this bass - many times. Ste is a top bloke and his description of the bass is very fair. It has had some knocks an bumps but it still plays great and that old neck feels lovely. This bass is a real BARGAIN!
8.
Or a bass.
I could use a synth - but I'm a bass player god dammit and I will not leave the bass alone!!!!
9. As Si suggested - here is the sticky discussion thread: http://basschat.co.u...fects-argument/ Please continue discussion there rather than here...
10. Due to almost identical threads being started about 400 times a week (slight over exaggeration...) and the same people giving the same answers it was suggested (thank you Si) that a sticky was made where the discussions can take place. I know this thread may become quite long but would urge anyone contributing to read it all to avoid covering the same ground (and you may find your point of view has been voiced and discussed already) over and over. As a summary, many non-effects users struggle to understand why bass players turn up to gigs with huge pedalboards and loads and loads of sounds at their disposal, when as a bass player they themselves have never 'needed' (or liked) the sound of anything but a good solid bass tone. This is often due to the musical styles played and I think it's fair for a gigging bassist to never 'need' or want to use pedals or effects... but then there are styles of music where different sounds, textures and effects make that genre what it is. As a bass player who is recording and gigging with an electronica project, I personally do not use a clean tone anywhere during the course of what I do - effects a vital to me and as much an instrument as the bass. With out my army of pedals I would struggle to make music that sits within this genre. Importantly, as Basschat has a forum dedicated to effects with hundreds of daily users, it is quite clear that effects play a large part of many bass player's set ups. Here are a few of the recent threads on this topic... FX...really need them? Why? I have a good bass and I have a good amp... Why do I need a pedal? Why do so many bass effects sound soooo bad? (and by 'bad' I don't mean good) Please continue the discussion in this thread and not on the threads above. Any new threads on the subject will be closed and linked to here to keep the discussion in one place. If you see a similar discussion start up in another part of the forum, please let me know, or link them to this thread. Shep. Discuss..................
11.
If you want to be trying to break new ground in the drum and bass/dubstep area then you have pretty much no choice... http://ourhelicalmind.bandcamp.com/album/analogftw-ep
Dude you make me blush! Yes this has been covered lots - at least 3 identical threads in the last month. That link contains music which is all live bass and live drums. I do NOT use a clean tone once during any of the recordings or live work... Effects are as much am instrument as the bass itself - in fact, in some tracks I force pedals to self oscilate and play them without touching the bass. For me I NEED them - and I too have a good bass and good amp.
CHRIST, not again !!! can we please have a sticky topic for this-kind-of-thing Shep ??? Pleeeease...
Good idea. I'll search out all the threads on this topic and compile them and start a sticky...
Surely you would be breaking "new ground in the drum and bass/dubstep area" by NOT using shitloads of effects?
Can't argue with that! Though many guys are doing it with no pedals now - just a midi pickup and a laptop running ableton, so maybe it still isn't ground breaking...
12. Here is the old thread - http://basschat.co.u...facebook%20page Boy how things have changed. I play bass for 2-piece Electronica/Brum&Bass/Dubstep/HipHop act, Our Helical Mind - everything created live without sequencers, samplers, decks or laptops - http://www.facebook.com/ourhelicalmind
13. I'll post it to ya mate for a tryout. Let me get the new recording out the way (may be useful to have when we hit the studio on the 9th) then I'll get it off to a few folks
14. I'm pretty booked up with gigs and recording until Sunday 10th but intend to do video demo's for them the following week. I've done the vid demos for the OC2 and Octamizer as well so need to get the finishing touches done!! The reverb should be available for try out if a few folks want to try it soon.
15. After some time spent with both, the Pitch Box is a definite keeper. Yes its a little wobbly on the higher sounds but for it's price it's the best 'budget' pitchshifter I've had my hands on and is perfect for my smaller board! Jury is still out on the reverb. It's a god pedal -but it was a punt to try and get me using more reverb... but it's just not me!
16. Awesome weekender at The Dog & Partridge in Bolton. A yearly event that gets packed out and features all the venues favourite acts that played over the last 12 months. We (Our Helical Mind) are playing on the Monday (4th) at 18:20pm along with BC's Dan Owens band, TheBrokenDoor, later that evening. Full line up etc: http://www.liveatthedog.co.uk/
17. Looks great. I played a couple of his basses at Bass Day a few years back and was VERY impressed. Really nice chap too. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Shep
18. I don't know if momentary switching would be an option but I can't imagine it would be a problem... I don't think I'd need it though. There is no form of swell/rise & fall in the pedal at all, it just jumps to the setting (like turning your octave pedal on). Andy - 1 & 2 up and down, plus a number of steps each way too (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th) etc allowing it to do proper harmony stuff. I will do video demo's for both as the next ones I record, I have quite a lot on at the mo though so I expect it to be some weeks before that happens.
19. Si - You could get another one or two boss sized units on that bad boy if only you'd TIDY IT UP!!!!!!
20. Ah dammit!!!! :-) I couldn't find it on the forum, but I was on my iPhone using the mobile theme! Fail
21. Apologies if this has been posted already. I friend sent me the link today and I found it quite amusing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQcehK0802A&feature=youtube_gdata_player Shep
22. 1st impressions are damn good. The Pitchbox sounds fairly digital & and the 2 octave ups has an almost slight sample rate reduction thing going off, it's minor but really suits what I do so I love it. The down shift stuff sounds smooth and is mug better than I thought and the 2 octaves down is real sub like of your speakers can handle it. The harmony setting works well - it does seem the clean signal takes a slight volume drop but not that effects the overall sound. The detune feature is amazing an turns the pedal into a chorus which is actually very good and sounds to me very much like the boss bass chorus. Pretty damn versatile and will certainly be going on my small board. One of the best £45 I've ever spent. The Shim Verb is also good, thought slightly less bass friendly. The 'level' knob is really a blend from clean to wet meaning as you move away from the far left you start to remove bass to ad in reverb rather than layering it on top. With the level around 10:30-11 the effect is usable though you do drop a little volume. The 3 reverb types are good and sound very nice. The actual tonal control from the colour knob is pretty excellent as well. The shimmer setting has a semi-harmony style thing going on adding a high drone harmony to the reverb - sounds like big synth pad stuff going off. For that setting alone it was worth it. Good stuff!
