1.
Well they're not going to show you any sneak peaks of the special paint job I slipped them a fiver to do for you are they?! I told them all about your love for Mr Blobby colour schemes
Awesome! They refused to do pink and green for me! Thanks for talking them around....
 2.
Not even kidding when I say that I dreamt of busting some bit tunes out on it! I guess you are right though, for a someone like myself(still stuck in traditional land) a B makes more sense than a high C. Although if I end up with the 6 I could do more chord work and still do massive huge B(it) riffs. *drools on laptop* Can't wait to see/hear your new one though, the craftmanship is amazing on the century so much attention to detail, only matched by it's --sound.
Thanks dude, they are stunning sounding instruments. I was hoping to have some progress shots now but they seem to be playing hard to get ;-)
 3.
Theres a filter sweep in the mid part
Not sure I can stomach listening to Muse twice in one week but I'll try and have another listen later...
 4. The main riff? Sounds like octave - gated fuzz - wet sounding envelope filter. 'Typical' synth tone as it were.
 5.
Agreed! I wonder how well it will play with the BEF. Any suggestions on filter? The moog was too big!
What do you want it for? Envelope/Auto Wah duties? There are so many now it's hard to choose. I'm Still very happy with my Groove regulator. The MXR was good if not a little too wet for me. I picked up an old Tone Factor 442 Analogue Filter and that sounds awesome after fuzz! If you want an LPF and the Moog is too big it's got to be the Iron Ether - but Tonally it's TOTALLY different as a resonant filter.
 6.
I've got a dubscope on the way, interested in an EQ pedal (thanks to your blog!) and tempted by something to raise the octave.. Need a filter also.. Not sure what to get..
Really keen to hear the Dubscope - let me know how you get on!! So many toys, not enough hours...
 7.
I actually don't know anymore if what I said above is right or not, the more I read the more confused I get, I'll just accept I was always rubbish at physics and shut up
Me too. I've changed my mind. Next blog post is on Delay & Reverb! Lol.
 8.
Keep up the blog man, I've really enjoyed reading it.
Thanks dude. We need some more pedalboard pics to bring the thread back on track! ;-)
Thanks Shep...
I love that quote is your sig. I'm having that engraved on my headstone!
 9.
Not quite sure where you're headed with this ... maybe it's a more precise definition in the realms of electronics or physics. But if we're going for something precise, the wave shape would get altered by any wah (manual, enveloped, or LFO'd). It would vary between a complex waveform and a simple sine-wave when nearly closed. A phaser is (I think I'm right, correct me if I'm wrong) a comb filter where the notches' movement (the notch frequencies) are driven by an LFO, which is not really that different in principle to a wah (a resonant filter) where the peak frequency is altered by an LFO. I think I was actually trying to say something much simpler ... something that's as good as we need as musicians. Essentially, If it wobbles, it's modulation. Is that good enough ? Andy
Agreed. It gets a little complex. I figure as long as the terminology makes sense when explained then it's fine. You are correct about a phaser. It's a filter modulated by an LFO. In the same light many synthesisers have the ability to move a high or low pass filter with an envelope and it's always considered part of the modulation section. Can of worms
 10. Well that's the next blog post written! Modulation effects vs modulating effects. Written in quotes by basschatters!
 11.
The current paltry 10-pedal board: I sold my Groove Regulator because I wasn't using it, now it looks like I'm starting a band where a filter would be very useful. D'oh. I don't wanna get one I've had before though, so I'm thinking of importing a xenograph.
Get another GR - They rock!
 12. I should start to get my head into using the terms 'modulation' and 'modulating' in different applications. Chorus is a modulation, a Wah is a filter that can be modulated. :-)
 13.
... can call ANY alteration to tone modulation, EQ, fuzz, compressor etc are all modulations because they alter what you hear.
This is exactly what I mean when I talk about modulation in general.
So in my opinion there's not only the less important question of semantics, that the definition of modulation refers to LFO-induced alterations, but also the more important question that 'dialing down' a targeted part of the spectrum is very different from changing its properties by throwing another signal at it. The signal modulates it, the filter filters it.
I got to understand it all from a synth perspective. I never really used the term 'modulation' until recently. In fact before I made a point to start really understanding effects I didn't really know the relation between chorus, phaser etc etc. I see it in terms of VCO's, Filters, LFO's etc and classify them all as modulation - including FM (Frequency modulation) and pushing fuzz into wave forms that create interesting textures. I appreciate this goes against the masses interpretation of a modulation effect, but I'm not the only man that thinks in these terms. Anyway, when I get around to doing the blog post I'll discuss it in terms of both my application and the way in which manufacturers (and most folk in music circles) refer to them, like I have with the other stuff. In fact... I'll make reference to this very conversation! :-) I totally understand your disagreement of my stance on modulation and when talking about it in general it make sense I refer to LFO's as modulation and filters as filters. I save the rest for my own little world
 14.
er isn't wah a filter?
It is a band pass filter. When it starts being moved by your foot, or by auto-wah functions it is a filter being modulated. Modulation comes in many forms and is not really a 'effect' in itself. We class Phasers, Chorus etc as modulation and envelopes as filters but really they all come under the modulation 'family'. If we want to classify them correctly then a wah would be a filter and chorus, flanger, phaser etc would be LFO's. Then both could be considered 'modulation-type' effects.
 15.
Ok, i'll be watching this forum for the link. My wah is a 3Leaf GR, it's a Lovetone clone and no expression, just plain simple auto-wah.
I know it well - It's on my pedalboard as well. My fav' envelope filter. :-)
 16. Cheers buddy! Wah is a modulation! Depending on what you have, I'd assume its a band pass filter controlled by expression pedal... :-) LFO's and the like can take some real exploration so I thought I'd work on a run down of all the 'basic' styles of modulation and LFO's and how they react to low frequencies etc with some listening examples... Gimme a week!
 17.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???? haha . One monster cab, coupled with a monster pedal board and a B-E-A-utiful bass. The extra 10hz lower this can does really makes a difference I think in getting super big clean lows. Not that the Compact is lacking. The BigTwinT is the perfect full range solution and Alex is super confident about his tweeter not blowing. even with Shep's sonic abuse!
I've thrown my all at it and that Tweeter is going strong! Very impressed!
 18.
Great reading Shep! I also use my comp in the end (signal path on my sig) and find it's the best place for it to tame all the spikes generated by the fx. I use the EBS because it doesn't add (much, i suppose) volume to to signal when you play softer so that helps keeping my dynamics intact, i only need compression to soften the spikes. Keep posting more of this great stuf and share the links with us, congratulations
Thanks bud, really means a lot that folks enjoy reading this stuff. Post your reply on the blog as a comment as well - it encourages others to post! :-) Hopefully soon my blog posts will also be shared with the new 'Blog' tab at the top of the forum as well. I think the next post is looking like it will be Modulation vs Bass Frequencies...
 19. New blog post a few of you may enjoy: Shep on Bass: Signal Chain Basics, Part II
 20. Neither could I! The bumpf about it is a bit rubbish. Basically it's a few tonal tweaks. From what I can tell those differences are very minor on a bass but stand out a little more with high end sound sources. I would describe the digital delay settings of the iB Mod version to have more attack and be a little choppier (though analogue and tape settings seem to be the same), also the modulation settings seem to be crisper and more refined. They are quite minor though! I'm told the panning and ping pong settings are the most changed versions but as I'll be using it in mono it doesn't effect me. I imagine the 'regular' version would impress me just as much. I'm not sure but I think the standard version only outputs tempo in milliseconds too (I forgot to check when I played them both) where as the iB version has MS and BPM options.
 21. Just received my TC Electronic Nova Delay (iB Modified edition). WOW! I think my Boss DD-20 just got replaced!!
 22. No ibby case, sold it in a cheap gig bag. They are the knobs I used so likely that was mine!
 23. I like to support BC an all that so I thought I'd ask the community before I take it to Dan @ Music Inn or Colin @ Dave Mann. Some audible static issues/possible grounding work on a bass. I have exhausted every option at home and with my limited electronics experience, including EVERY bit of advice from others I'm every thread of the last 2 years on Basschat with folks asking for help over 'similar' issues. So anyone do this for a living in the community near by? Shep
