I own a Corvid Fuzz (Jumbo Tone Bender clone with tweaks) - in fact I've owned 2! Hugh (thats his name!) seems like a nice and knowledgeable chap too...

I've been using my Big Twin T for a few months now and it is without doubt the best sounding cab I have ever used. Effectively a full range PA in a single cab - Ideal for what I do. I am currently driving it with 1400w, BUT this is not because I need the power for volume. Before this I was driving with 350w and it was SERIOUSLY loud! My increase in headroom is to exploit extreme EQ settings (Huge boosts of 40-50hz sub) which is labour intensive on amps (while not massively musical in 'cenventional' bass playing - but perfect in my live Drum & Bass stuff). Just back from the studio. Switch cleaner has sorted the crackly volume pot - all gone. Switch cleaner in the jack sockets seems to of done some goo there as well as the crackles bangs and pops are slightly quieter and certainly less frequent - though this could be coincidence. Oddly though I could not recreate the issue playing my iPod through the amp, only with an instrument connected. Using it as a power amp run by my EBS pre, it performs perfectly! The Harke does nothing in this setting and the volume control does not work (assume that's pre not post) but it allows me to get decent volume and tone from my EBS. I have only tested this with a clean signal and won't get to throw my full sub bass doom at it until tomorrow and hope it holds up OK. So, definitely the pre and likely a dry joint around the input as you suspected. I'll have a hunt for that when I'm feeling brave!

Guys, If we think it's related to the input, could I still use my EBS Pre amp connected to the effects return to treat the Hartke as a power amp?

Thanks guys. I think I may write this one off then. It's not my call to get it repaired and was only 'borrowing' it for a few days... ... Priority now should be to borrow a different amp!

Hey guys, My Crown XTI1000 power amp is on its way back to crown due to a faulty display board. I don't own a spare amp, but there was a 2nd hand Hartke HA4000 in our works store room (I work for a company similar to Cash Convertors), which I was able to 'borrow' until my power amp comes back. Yay I thought... Got to the studio today, plugged in and powered on an while it 'works' the volume pot is very loud and crackly - a blast of switch cleaner I'm sure will sort it. Worse though, there seems to be the occasional crackle in sound when not touching the knobs, followed buy VERY loud pops and/or bangs - these are amplified higher than the volum of the bass signal. The pops etc do not seem to be related to a specific connection as happen on both input jacks and are not related to the wiggling of a cable etc... Just seem to be when it wants. It can be quiet for a minute or two, then bang 3 or 4 times. I've opene it up and can't see any dry joints etc, everything seems intact. I'll blast some switch cleaner onto the volume pot and in the jack sockets but I'm not convinced it'll help... I tried a couple of different leads as well to rule that out. The only non PC thing I was doing is not using a regular speaker cable. This was because the amp only has jack outs an I only own speakon to speakon cables. I used a high quality instrument jack-jack lead with a jack to speakon adapter on one end. The cable and adapter are usually used for other things and both perform fine so I can't see this being related to the issue, but is worth noting for completions sake. Other than switch cleaner... Anyone have any ideas what would cause this. The bangs are very loud and aggressive and do not sound at all healthy for the cab. In between the bangs and occasional ceackle the signal sounds perfectly clean. I'm eager to get this working as I'm totally without an amp! Thanks Shep UPDATE: Just noticed that with no instrument/nothing plugged into the inputs the noises do not seem to happen, nor does the volume pot crackle! So maybe it is related to the input sockets and switch cleaner may well work!?

I used to run the LPF after all dirt with just chorus, phaser and delay after. After months of playing around I've settled on it being 2nd last as well with only the delay after. Thi is because the phaser and chorus have lots of drive which helps the LPF sound 'fatter'. My ring mod has been moved all over the place. It's an interesting effect and is like the Swiss army knife of pedals. I always run it after dirt as the compressed distorted signal with lots of harmonic gives the ring mod more frequencies to effect and makes it sound much more complex. It put it before my modulation now as it just sounds sweeter to me. As for the trip over, Anytime dude!

OK... I own and use 5 plus some Moog control unit (EP-2 & MP-201). While they are often considered synth modules they are useful in ALL styles when you use them wisely. Even Janek Gwizdala has the Ring Mod on his board for his jazz stuff. Things that may help influence your decision... 1. They all have a mix control so you can add as much or as little of the 'effect' to your sound as you use. This is particularly useful with the Ring Mod and the FreqBox as you can use them to flavour your sound rather than sound mental (which they really can). 2. The 'odd drive' thing your friend mentions - Non of them are true bypass, and while I would not say the 'suck tone', they do flavour your sound a little. The drive control on the pedals are always active - so when in bypass you can still cut and boost your line gain with the drive pot. In itself this can be treated as an effect as most of them go to a subtle overdrive sound, in fact the Low Pass Filter sounds GREAT when driven hard, if you can cope with the boost in volume that comes with it. If you are just using one or two its no issue. Running 5 like me gets a challenge as each one in turn adds to the drive of the last so its a balancing act to get them all driven nicely. The Freqbox Drive is the only one which is not always active. 3. They are not turn on and play pedals, with the exception of the Phaser you need to spend some time with them and the way they interact with other units. If you are prepared to experiment then there really are no better pedals. 4. Buy the Low Pass filter. Its amazing. And, for heavy stuff, the Phaser, on 12-stage mode after Fuzz is pure DOOM! Any other questions etc, just ask... Or come to Nottingham and try them all out for an afternoon. Shep

It depends on your set up as others above have mirrored. I used to use separate pedals, but then went down the combined route with an EBS Unichorus which is a great chorus and a pretty good, but subtle flanger). Tried the Mark Bass one but it sounded too thin to me, despite having a million options. The best without shadow of a doubt is the Moogerfooger Cluster Flux, which I also own. It is the richest sounding chorus and flanger I have ever heard and the amount of crazy far out stuff it can do on top of being stunning at both effects is totally unreal. It does however come with a MASSIVE price tag. I use that and the EBS in my set up still - Despite how awesome the Cluster Flux is, I can't let go of the Unichorus. I think the EBS is a great place to start. If you find you don't like having the 2 effects combined then you'll be able to sell it on for what you paid for it if you get a 2nd hand one and they tend to sell fast. Shep

I saw the guitarist from Breed 77 use one of these with his acoustic about 7-8 years ago. He stood behind it playing electric, then reaches over the stand plays a few chords on acoustic - back to the electric. Not sure if it was an early conception from the same company. I'm also not sure I'd want to put my 6 string Roscoe's on one - but they are pretty cool!
