It’s my daughter’s 4th birthday today so there’s no way of me squeezing in a decent session without some major eye rolls from my partner. I did manage 5 mins though and it sounds delightful! Really punchy and full sounding, chords or droning stuff sounds really clear, much less muddy compared to my jazz. The filters are gonna take a little getting used to, intuitive but still unfamiliar. It’s odd being able to fine tune both pickups rather than a more typical tone that shapes the overall sound.

All wired up and strung with some fresh Newtone strings, looks excellent but needs a little time under tension to settle before I get it set up properly I think. Not a problem as I forgot to charge a 9v battery in preparation. It’s clearly been a while since I’ve played an active bass 🥲

Well I decided as much as I like the bass, the p-pickup sound just isn’t something I really enjoy. If I need a P-bass sound I can get close enough with my Yamaha BB. Decided to mod my P4 with some Turner multicoil pickups and go for a DIY budget Wal makeover. Not quite finished but getting close!!!

Me too!!! Should hopefully get it all connected later today 🙏

Just had one of those “hang on a minute” moments regarding the missing flat head screwdriver bits when I woke up this morning. It struck me odd on reflection that they were missing despite the lack of empty spaces where they should live… Checked this morning and as suspected I had a suspicious number of similarly sized bits. My daughter had turned them all round at some point and I was too tired to work it out last night 😂

I got the Schecter P4 Exotic a couple of years back and while I loved the way it played and the look I realised that P bass sound wasn’t for me. After watching @funkle’s post on building a Wal-ish I decided I wanted to build my own. It’s something I’d looked at before but always seemed like a massive leap of faith with the lack of demos, all the content showing off the Lusithand NFP and Turner Pickups pushed me over the edge. Here’s some of the process so far: The original Schecter P4 Exotic. Prepping for incision, getting centre lines and working out how much needed routing out. A little improvising and got it routed, regretted forgetting the dust extractor for the router though… A new pick guard and some extremely deep pickup cavities to house the Turner English voiced multicoil pickups. Test fit before I attached the neck and started connecting wires. The journey has hit a blocker there sadly as I seem to have misplaced my flathead screwdriver bits to connect the preamp and pickups. Hopefully should get that all finished up this weekend though 🙌

PS sorry @funkle for hijacking your thread.

Just finished routing the pick guard and some finishing touches like countersinking the screws etc. Was just about to connect it up and realised all my flathead screwdrivers i need to connect the pickups and preamp have gone missing 🥲 Very happy with how it’s turning out, ended up spacing the pickups a little further than initially intended largely down to cosmetics and symmetry.

Boss GT 1000 / Core & GX100 / 10 Users - Patches and Ideas

Yeah if you move the divider directly after the input you get a Selector routing option. Dunno what it does but sounds like it has a lot of potential! -

I believe you need it set to Mode = Pan, not sure if you could then set an assign to toggle mix 100:0 or 0:100 or something. I seem to remember if you put a divider immediately after the input it changes too. -

Haha yeah we used to get away with a lot so it’s probably about time 😂 I know one person who used his to read lyrics at gigs which is probably breaching multiple company policies. -

Ahh yeah I think that’s how I had it set up with bothe the GT1000core and Scarlett before I sold it, regretted it and bought another 🤣 A while back work clamped down on people installing random software on work laptops, luckily i already had logic set up. Just got a 2nd hand Mac Mini for personal use so I can actually install the boss drivers and tone studio etc so I can actually get a bit more use out of it now. Gonna have a play. I’ll hang onto the Scarlett as it’s a 1st gen and now worth selling, hand for connecting monitors and headphones to. -

Anybody using their GT1000 as an audio interface for recording? I have a Focusrite Scarlett I typically use. Combined with the Capos pre/post DI it makes it really easy to get a dry signal as well incase I want to reamp. It’s a lot of cables though. The GT1000core provides a main, sub and dry signal in stereo too via usb I believe? It also allows you to reamp without having to faff around with reamp boxes etc. Kind seems like a no brainier now! -
For practice you could go for the Boss Katana Go too which gets great reviews. The Element seems like a great bit of kit, excellent addition to a pedalboard and well made. Might be a little overkill if you just wanna hear yourself play though.

It’s excellent 👌 loads of tones and plenty of grit options. Really love the depth and absence controls. Got too many good options now that I can’t decide which to keep 😭
-
There’s gotta be a way to make it all fit! 😰
-
Great sounding pickups and preamp, very punchy. Not sure it sounds exactly like a Wal but sounds excellent regardless.
-
Haha well fortunately my dad was a luthier and still got all the gear and a small workshop available for use 🙌 Gonna be a fair bit of work, gotta make the router templates, router the new cavity for the bridge, extend the P cavity for the neck and then make the scratch plate. Got a long list of other bits to sort like fixing a few dings, sorting a loose screw on the neck and strap lock where it’s loose. Also wanna take some of the gloss out of the finish. May be a few evenings before I get to play it 🥲
-
Yeah makes sense. I’ll be doing the same I think but balancing the placement so it looks right with the scratch plate. Thankfully the P-Bass scratch plate sits pretty low so shouldn’t be an issue with getting them close to the bridge 🙌
-
Looks excellent 👌 excited to see how it sounds! How did you decide on placement? Did you eyeball it or go with any specific measurements? Me too, was debating if it was worth the extra spend but I’m all about that mid growl. Knew I’d regret it if not🔥🔥🔥
-
Heck, the Turner multicoils just arrived today and they’re hefty! Here’s a DiMarzio Model P for reference. Build quality is fantastic on these!
-
Nice! I’m doing the same at the moment except with the Lusithand NFP Special. Just need to strip everything off and take all the copper tape out of the cavities ready to route it next week. Need to make a new scratch plate and fix a few dents well I’m at it too, very excited to get it all sorted 🙌 @0175westwood29 Did you go for the Original or English voiced version?
-
It changes fairly regularly but currently it’s: Polytune Jad Freer Capo input Capo pre loop send > Thumpinator Lusithand Alma Comp Boss OC5 Moose Sledgehammer EAE Halberd EAE Dagger HX One HX One send > EAE Model feT < Capo pre return Capo post send > < HX One return HX One output < Capo post return Capo output Couldn’t think of a better way to articulate it, certainly not any more concise. This means that I can have a clean DI and a DI from the end of the chain. I can also add fx either after drives but before the preamps or after preamps and before the DI.
-
Yeah, it’s a beautiful bass, plays great too. I think other active preamps I’ve tried or passive options like the Stellartone work much better for me personally, for whatever reason it always feels like I have more control with them. My signal chain and stuff I’m playing will probably have a big impact on that though.
