It sounds like just about any class d or solid state head or combo would fill your requirements. It's gonna depend what your tonal preference is etc. Lots of great deals for cheap heads and combos on here.
-
Yeah pretty fortunate I have access to all the tools and stuff so it's really just materials etc. I imagine sourcing the speakers is the most costly and tricky to find. Might have a proper look tonight.
-
Well it'll be lighter than the backup ampeg 610 I'm sure 😂
-
Ahhh just priced up with the price list and looks to be around £275-300ish. Just reading through the plans, no time now but on my list of things to do.

Out of curiosity how much did they cost to build? What kind of weight? Looks like a fun project!

MOD Device (Dwarf/Duo/Duo X) owners' club - Tips, Ideas & Patches
MrDinsdale replied to SamIAm's topic in Effects
I found this, it was really intermittent. I wonder if it's due to someone else using it at the same time or something. -
Aside from the OP it's actually been a really insightful thread, it's really interesting to hear how people handle sharing stages with other bands and change overs etc. It might not be right for my current band but I'm in no way against IEMs. I'd still probably want a BF 112 or something to give a bit of the feels/backup etc but running at much lower levels.

Can you browse the plugin store/beta store without the device? -
Awesome, you have all the best toys!

Haha yeah same although to resolve it would mean jumping to a significantly bigger board!!! It's either a ridiculously long board or a very tall sparse board. Yeah it's a great sound, really built for guitar but just works great for bass. Theres a great demo of the Dagger V2 which is a cut down version of the Longsword. Its an Ergodox, used to have 2 but my Ergodox EZ kickstarter died and this diy one is on its way. Gonna replace with the Avalanche V4 but need to set some time to solder it all! Love a good ergonomic keyboard 🙌

@Ander87 yeah I mean more like cranking the gain and level on B to around 2-4 o'clock. I'm aiming for obliteration levels here. I get a huge jump in volume, the FeT on the other hand just crushes it. I imagine thats part of the attraction for all the doom stuff, you can throw all sorts of fuzz at it and it just gives you a saturated wall of filth.
-
I think the Capo has a good range of grit on A and in combination with B can provide a range of tones. That being said if you really crank the B side level to drive the A the volume jump makes it pretty unusable for anything other than an always on. With the FeT it pretty much caps the level, any additional gain going in just saturates massively, it's a monster. Not sure how the Hudson would respond but definitely worth playing around with it. I personally preferred the FeT in the post loop as it's the perfect end of chain tone (drive) sweetener, my musical technical vocabulary is pretty limited but the best way I can describe it is chewy. Aye the Ground and Pound sounds pretty good, as much as I love JC I'm not sure I need that pedal, the Halberd gets close enough but I'll probably end up buying one anyways 😂

Yeah I'm sure the Dwarf could be flashed with a Community version of the lower level stuff should the worst happen. It's funny because I keep thinking "what if they go under and there are no more updates" but it already has an obscene number of plugins available. Equally I don't think the GT1000core is likely to see as much as a quality of life update now, nevermind any new content. -
Anyone else using another preamp in the post FX loop? I have the Model FeT in there as it stacks so well with drives, I find it gives a nice smoothness to the Capo and other drives. Started having a play to see what kind of grit I can get out of just the Capo and Model FeT and I'm finding using the B side as a boost really pushes the A side and output in to the FeT which just sounds great. Will try and get some demos. If you do have another Pre that takes drives well I'd give it a go. You loose a little of the Capo powerful EQ but still lets you shape the tone you're cramming in the other preamp 😂

MOD Device (Dwarf/Duo/Duo X) owners' club - Tips, Ideas & Patches

Yeah I've been sat thinking about it for a month solid so pretty much nailed the pros/cons list 😂 I'd like to think if they did go down for good, they'd at least work with the community to provide ongoing access to the ecosystem and the store etc. -
They are just incredible pedals, mostly known for the Model FeT (Sunn Model T in a box) but they have some ace gear. Apparently John, the owner has been hugely influencial in the boutique pedal market and has his name on a lot of PCBs for other brands etc. I did a little bit of a playthrough with the FeT, intend to do one for the Longsword and Halberd on bass though as they're excellent.

So it's pay day... Two paths lay before me. I could get the Boss again, super flexible in terms of integration with existing pedals. Lots of benefits like saving instrument profiles so I can normalise levels going into my drives etc as I have one very hot bass. I know the ecosystem, not as flexible as Mod and unlikely to see any real software updates. Then on the other side is Mod, never played it and don't know how it'll stack up sonically but demos are good. Pretty limitless routing and open source which I love, even if the company went under again it'd probably receive more quality of life improvements from the community than Boss are going to deliver. It doesn't however integrate as nicely with my analog pedals and introduces a lot of latency, especially when using the channels as an fx loop instead of stereo. Cant make meaningful changes directly without another device. Still can't decide, can get both for around £400, new for the dwarf or 2nd hand for the Core. Still leaning towards the Mod Dwarf, so much potential to do really cool stuff with it. Still it's a lot of money, especially considering the volatility of the company. Even though it could be supported by the community, if their plugin store goes down it adds a significant amount of faff. -
It's a very accurate recreation of some JC flavour, incredibly versatile for such a small pedal. His tone is very mid focused though. If you're in the market for a Rat like drive but want some extra tone shaping and clean blending then you can't really go wrong with this pedal.
-
I think the Darkglass stuff is quality gear and can be dialled in for way less of that well known tone. Tastes change, I've gone the opposite where I only ever really used a little compressor a few years back but now my board is full of snarly grit and clanky drives. There are a lot of flavours of distortion out there to sample, some more nourishing than others.

Super informative! I can't imagine we'll ever go ampless in the near future tbh although I can see the perks and why people do.
-
And do you have control of your own on-stage mix or do you leave that to the sound engineer? Just curious as it's incredibly uncommon in the bands we play with. I know for a fact no one else in the band would have any interest in going ampless but interesting to know.
-
Just out of curiosity, the bands playing with fully ampless rigs, are you playing with other bands and if so are they using similar setups? I don't think we've played a single gig with any bands using an ampless setup so usually everything is mic'd up ready to go, just a case of switching heads and breakables etc. I'd imagine switching between a stage fully configured for full backline to ampless then back again would be a bit of a nightmare, especially with quick changeovers.

Handbox WB-100, every time I plug in it brings a big smile to my face, just sounds incredible. Its got all the heft of a 40kg all-valve monster but at a reasonable 15kg and compact size that makes it perfectly portable. Also on the opposite end of the spectrum a special call out to the GK Fusion S which was an amazingly versatile little amp. Had I not joined a band full of valve enthusiasts I'd have probably happily still been playing it.
