MOD Device (Dwarf/Duo/Duo X) owners' club - Tips, Ideas & Patches
MrDinsdale replied to SamIAm's topic in Effects
The other option of course is that the Mod Dwarf does such a good job of capturing the analog fx and Capo preamp that I don't need to worry about them at all and for live, the CAPO just becomes a DI box and I leave all the other expensive pedals at home. That's not an option with the GT1000 because I know for a fact the drives and preamps included just don't cut it for the sounds I'm trying to get. -

As a point of comparison this is what I'd do with the GT given the Stereo output and 2x FX Loops. It's kind of like sandwiching the GT1000core with the CAPO I/O so that you still get the unaffected pre di signal and the affected post di signal. Then you're treating the CAPO preamp section kind of as if you might wire up an amp using 4CM. Ultimately this means in the GT1000core you would have the analog fx in Loop 1 and the CAPO preamp section in Loop 2. On the Main output your Left signal would go to the amp while the Right would feed back in to the CAPO return and to the Post DI, that way you could apply cabsims to the R side only so that it didn't go to your amp. -

Quick mockup while on a call at work 😂 This is how I think it'd be connected up. It means the signal goes in to the CAPO and I get a completely clean pre DI signal, from there out of the first fx loop and into my analog drives then the first input of the Dwarf. So I can pop FX after the drive pedals but not before (I guess having the Dwarf fx might be better for compression and octave etc). Then it'd hit the Capo Preamp. Then back off out to the Dwarf for any post fx before returning to the CAPO for the post DI signal. -

Well I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger just trying to decide if it fits my setup. Annoyingly even with some fx loop inception, if i want the option to add reverb/delay at the end of the chain that would leave me being able to add fx either before or after my analog drives but not both. Only having mono output means that I also can't split it and have cabsims going to FOH while still having a signal to my amp etc. -

I quite liked how Boss handled it on the GT1000 where they let you configure different instruments and correctly set the input level for optimum, I had a wide range from -6db to +6db. -

I'm not against the idea of ditching my analog pedals entirely in principle but I've just never found anything digital that gets me as close as I'd want. The capturing models of fx pedals is super interesting, especially drives and preamps where I could jump from mid to heavy gain settings at the press of a switch. My Capo preamp has two fx loops, a pre and post loop that allow for a pre and post DI. My idea with the CORE was to kind of weave the two together with nested FX loops so that i could sandwich the analog pedals with digital fx. I can still do this via the Mod but it means I'm a little more restricted on where I place the digital fx. It's a very complex signal chain I had in mind, will try and draw a diagram 😂 -

I think it's very common, people often have separate profiles for guitars, sometime singlecoil vs humbuckers etc. It's not really any different with pedals though, a guitar with a hotter signal is gonna have way higher input gain and hit drives harder so having separate profiles is a good way to automate it I guess rather than twiddling knobs! -

I'm definitely still quite intrigued by the Dwarf. I only want it for FX, I'm incredibly happy with my Handbox head and Capo/Model FeT preamp combo. The thing that hooked me on the GT1000 core was the parallel signal options etc. I do kind of find some of the fx, while they sound incredible lack the flexibility to do weird stuff and go off the beaten track. I'd love to experiment with some ambient delays and reverbs etc. I've seen a few mentions that the Mod Dwarf is much better suited to noise rock and quirkier sounds, it kind of sounds perfect. Just wish it had more fx loop options. -
For punky stuff especially, a sansamp is a really solid drive option. I don't use one myself but have used the pedal and rack version in the studio and for gigs and it does give a really great full driven tone. Never really had time to really experiment with it though. You might not need a compressor at all if you get that stuff right, I do run an always on compressor but its so subtle that I often forget to turn it on.

Was just thinking about aluminium necks and supposed tuning stability issues, the evertune would be the perfect solution (aside from the weight) to the sensitivity to temperature changes.

Couldn't help but notice there are quite a lot of audible clicks and pops when enabling/disabling effects on the playground, guessing thats a quirk of running in the browser? -

Does the online demo gui allow for uploading clips to loop? Being able to use actual clean recordings of your bass etc to play with would be a game changer. -

Just wondering if anyone is using the Dwarf alongside other analog pedals? I have some pedals, 2x preamps and 2x drives that I have no intention of removing. Stuff like the GT1000core and Stomp definitely have an advantage over this in the sense that they have 2 fx loops which give you way more options for wiring them up. Would be curious to see how people have wired it up. -
Haha it's an acquired taste, I love them though.

I've had this pedal for a while now and always intended to do a quick video like this. It's not annotated, no talking, no plan and it's far from scientific but it's a pretty good showcase for how I like to use it. I'm not sure how well it'll be picked up in this video but the Model FeT adds a smoothness to high gain drives that just sounds incredible, it pairs particularly well with the EAE Longsword (featured near the end). I think it took me a while to really get my head around this pedal, capitalising on the brite and normal channels to get just the right amount of breakup and thickness. Also coming from mostly GK heads the FMV style tonestack felt super unintuitive (and still does) but I've started getting more of a feel for what works, I just need to really ignore where I think the bass, mid and treble should be and go completely off what I'm hearing. I really can't get enough of Electronic Audio Experiments gear, everything they make is incredidbly high quality.

Did a very quick demo of the Capo, running through the controls and showing how it reacts to drives etc. No annotations or talking just me haphazardly twiddling dials and hoping for the best.

After much deliberation I decided the Mastro Valvola OFF1 just wasn't for me. So back to drawing board, this gap isn't going to fill itself! Thinking about grabbing an EAE Halberd to pair with the Longsword and replace the OFF1 at which point i think it's safe to say I've got dirt covered. I have been blown away by everything EAE and aside from the Capo they're the only pedals which have lived up to my internal hype. Considering grabbing another GT1000core when I can afford it to introduce some additional effects and experimentation. It would be really handy for recording guitar too.

I borrowed one off someone at work a while back, it sat on a shelf until a few days before he asked for it back when I actually tried it. It's a prettier hideous design but sounded fantastic. Been looking out for a decent price on one ever since to have more of a play.
-
Its a beast! Have you tried the Pharaoh or any of the Black Arts Toneworks stuff?
-
I'm not sure what range is effected by the treble control but it's much higher band than most preamps I've used. I only touch it when I'm putting guitar through.
-
Schecter J4 and P4 Exotic with DR hi beams mostly. Music wise it's mostly the band stuff which is noisy rock, kinda like Quicksand/Rival Schools I guess. Lots of Tool and other heavier stuff but also lots of folky stuff which calls for a much cleaner rounder tone. I'd say its a fairly broad spectrum tonally and I never have much trouble dialing it in. I even use the Capo for some light tone shaping on guitar which works great too. Probably gonna pop flats on my p4 for a little extra variety in future.

It's been discussed already but its very easy to configure the Evertune to respond to any string bends and vibrato.

It really is fantastic, I don't think you'll regret it!
