I got my Cioks DC7 just over a week ago after upgrading from the Cioks 4. Instantly noticed an improvement in noise, 8 pedals on the C4 required a lot of daisy chaining. Anyways a couple of nights ago I was playing around on guitar, went to switch on my Model fet pedal and it totally cutout. Had a fiddle to see if the child had knocked the volume and gains down and noticed it was hot, checked the DC7 and that was really hot too. Unplugged and left it to cool down but the Model fet smelt burnt. Tried plugging it in with the C4 supply straight in to the interface and it's completely dead, lights on but no one is home. Messaged Cioks explaining what had happened and that it had made me a nervous to plug in again etc incase anything else blew up. There wasn't anything accusational in there, I was just looking for answers on what could have happened and a little assurance. Instantly it felt like they jumped on the defensive, blaming the house electrics and dirty power and that it's my fault for not carting a £200 power conditioner around with my pedalboard. Just felt like a bit of a copout really and left me still hesitant about plugging in the pedalboard. I've lost one hard to find boutique effects pedal which is properly gutting and can't really afford to replace, can't afford to loose any more. On the flipside, John at EAE was super helpful when I asked if he had any ideas if the pedal was salvageable despite buying me it 2nd hand. Equally messaged Andertons and they've been super responsive and helpful.

Selling used pedals. How do you figure out what to charge?

90% for a readily available pedal seems mad even if brand new condition but ultimately they're entitled to list it for whatever they feel it's worth. I think the most I've paid for a pedal relative to its retail value was £210 for the Model FeT which retailed at £259. That was out of stock everywhere at the time and impossible to get without importing it so i was happy to pay that and avoid the 6-9 month wait. -
The WB100 flat is a pretty perfect all round bass tone, I tend to crank the mids for some extra clank on aggressive stuff but otherwise flat.
-
i used to really struggle with boomy tones with my old GK Fusion S and I found the Thumpinator HPF helped a lot along with easing back a little on the bass a tad. Can't speak for the R400 but same work's pretty well for the WB100 although it wasn't particularly boomy without.

That sounds even more intriguing, sounds like retrofitting on an older bass might actually be pretty trivial.

Yeah they're really remarkable but given the lack of UK distribution you kind of have to take a bit of a gamble on shipping and taxes etc. It's the ultimate all round utility pedal though for tone shaping, excellent DI and surgical EQ. To be honest between the Origin, Ampeg and more boutique options like the Capo you're gonna get a pretty incredible sound. If it's enough to offset the GAS is another question altogether 😂
-
I guess the morale of this post is that there are a lot of options out there! If you don't mind loosing a little money on return shipping you might be better making the most of return policies and try them out. Could grab a bassrig and the ampeg and audition them both, send back the looser. Preferably after doing some side by side recording's of them for us to listen to 🙌

Also Joe's Pedals is the place to go and spend all your money, he's a most excellent person.
-
Eugh that's annother for the to-buy list, I think that demo did it more justice than the other demo above. I'd have to try it alongside the Longsword.

I'm loving my Jad Freer Capo, incredible bit of kit (sorry for adding more options). Remarkably versatile, not emulating a specific amp but just sounds excellent. I use it for everything from soft folk to obnoxiously noisy punk and it always delivers. No cabsim but it has an LPF which trims off a little high end for a more cab-like frequency range.

Oooo the Nikki Sixx will have the Luminlay dots too, don't get why any basses don't have them. Realise I sound obsessed with luminlay now 😂 Seafoam green still wins over distressed white though for me!

Yeah I built a bass when I was 16, it was basically a droopy shaped Warwick Thumb 5 string. That was my only bass until a few years ago, now my taste has kind of u-turned. Gone are the clean hifi amps, no fx and Warwick/boutique basses, it's all about gritty saturated tones and 4 string "classic" bass shapes. That could well change again in future but it's a nice welcomed shake up that's really renewed my interest after a long time of not really playing much.

Yeah I've always thought of Schecter as the novelty metal guitar brand, would've never naturally considered them for bass. Everyone's experience is different but for me it's easily my favourite bass I've ever played. I was luck to find it 2nd hand in great condition but I'd have happily payed full price.
-
It'd have been nice it it had the luminlay that my P5 exotic has for fret markers but other than that it's pretty much perfect for me.

I absolutely love my J4, got it as a backup originally for my P4 but it's almost all I play now. Plays fantastic, the necks are really nice. The pickups are a slightly odd shape but they sound incredible. I initially intended to swap them incorrectly assuming they wouldn't be very good out but tbh if I could find them I'd put them in my other basses too. Put a few little videos up featuring it
-
Not sure exactly how it works tbh, my understanding of amps and technical terms is pretty much non-existent. You're probably right though, quite a valve-like compression, I want to say like sag but not sure that's the correct term.
-
Possibly in a lot of cases but there are many others where the power section does have a huge influence. Most notable that I know of is GK and their trademark "riding the rails" tone by really pushing the power section.
-
Wasn't sure where this lived but recently signed up for the STLTones AmpHub free trial. They have a bass amp on there called the Graviton which is actually pretty decent. Had a little play trying to loosely match my current pedalboard sound with it and wasn't far off tbh after a few mins twiddling! Well worth checking it out, the guitar tones are pretty impressive too, all the presents seem pretty metal heavy but you can get just about any tone you want out of it 🙌 Gonna continue using it to audition some different fx outside of my preamp/compression/drive comfort zone. $10 a month is much cheaper that dropping £400 on a multifx or some boutique modulation pedals only to find I like boring dirt 😂

I'd love to do some proper ab comparison between amps with different power section types. I've owned Class D, SS and currently own an all valve, it'd be really interesting to know how much of what I like about them resulted from the pre-amp vs the power section etc. I did an AB at practice (I was early as always) with my GK Fusion S which I loved next to the Marshall VBA400 both in the front and into the return and begrudgingly had to give it to the Marshall on both counts. It wasn't a super fair test though given the VBA having to warm up and cool down between swapping over etc so it wasn't like I could just flick back and forth. Just to clarify, I'm certainly not at all against class d heads but just mean I hope whatever they make is a little different to the options out there already.
-
I was hoping to see a super light solid state or class g head from them along the lines of Handbox and Jad Freer stuff. Don't have an issue with class d gear at all but seems pretty saturated with options and something a bit different would be cool. Maybe even just a lightweight power amp along the lines of the gss sumo. Sure whatever it is will be cool though 🙌
-
Ooooo nice, that'd clean it up nicely! good shout 🙌
-
Thats cool, for me the preamps and dirt are the bare minimum for the band, not really a calling for anything else yet. I really enjoyed the GT1000core but couldn't quite get a tone I was happy with for my base bass sound, it'd have been perfect for this kind of exploratory stuff though. Still leaning towards the Mod Dwarf for way more flexibility, you can do some very unique stuff with it. Got a Rockboard 2.1 and Cioks 4 that i think I'll repurposed to create a little creative add-on pedalboard. Maybe grab some modulation cheap pedals and the Dwarf and see what kind of weird noises I can make.

I'm managed to score a Radial ProDI for around £40 on ebay a while back. I've also got a very nice DI on the Jad Freer Capo which is I'd say inline with a JDI and similar. I've also used super budget DIs. Can honestly say, while there is a noticeable difference between the extreme ends of the spectrum in a direct comparison, for live use it's pretty negligible. Certainly a case of diminishing returns. If I didn't have the Capo I'd be going for something like this or a second hand radial low/mid level DI for live music use. What ever had a reasonable noise floor and was compact.
