1. on gumtree These were probably cheap to start with, but maybe someone is looking for an old sg-shaped bass... Not mine, i hasten to add...
2.
Looks a bit suspicious to me, i looked at it and read all the description on it... i dunno, just looks a bit wierd that a Spector Legend 4 is up for sale for £80...
I agree, yet the guy says it's the (cheaper) passive version, and it looks a little unloved, with no vol and tone knobs etc. I'm not particularly interested atm, maybe someone else...
3. looks interesting, anybody had a look?
4. I'm now the proud new owner of this fantastic piece of kit! Thanks Jon!
5. Personally, I think this recording makes it quite hard to make a judgement. It all sounds very tinny, and you can hardly hear the voice and bass, while guitars and drums are very loud. A better recording will make you sound a lot more accomplished and polished, and it would make it easier to give suggestions.
6.
Australia-Pacific? I thought Toon wood grew only in the suburbs of Newcastle ...
Clearly an export wood then
7.
Ah, Givson - Mother India's finest! I had the intriguing experience of examining one of these first-hand, in my local Crack Convertors a couple of years back. You really do get the impression that a few containers of random guitar parts washed up off Mumbai & someone who'd never seen a guitar before put them together with the aid of a 1963 Teisco catalogue. I've actually seen these turn up on Ebay being fobbed off as 60s oddities - anyway the website's here - the peculiar naming conventions are why the Ebay seller assumes his bass is Hawaiian: http://www.givson.com/home.html If you really want a Givson GB King bass (OK, I know you don't, but it's theoretical, right?) Raj Musicals will do you one brand new for about £60. Air fare to New Delhi not included. Jon.
I WANT ONE! At first I thought that Toon wood was actually a typo, but then i did some research, and it looks like it's some kind of australia-pacific wood, apparently a good tone wood.
8. What about Hell's bells - ACDC, or Zombie - the cranberries?
9. The bridge bit in Soul Man, where it drop to G/C or whatever it is...I still never play the same sequence twice...
10.
Always liked the look of these, but never played one. that black/maple config is my fave too. but arent they really heavy?
Extremely, but I don't care.
11. I bought one of these here on BC earlier this year, after trying one at some jam night while I was on holiday. The one I got is from 1980 i seem to recall, black/black/maple, just like the one in the pic. FANTASTIC piece of kit. The neck is just right for me, and I find the weight reassuring. The controls are a little quirky, but that adds even more charm, and frankly they let you find the right sound almost all the time, without having to fiddle with amp. I can always cut through the mix like it's nobody's business, and I still retain lots of bottom end. I use it with a Peavey head of the same age, and the sounds i'm getting are fantastically growly and deep, yet midrangy and honky if needed. Maybe not very hifi, but that's not my main thing anyway. Oh, and the looks and questions you get at gigs are a bonus, and a nice tickle for my ego. All this for less than 300 pounds. I wish i bought one sooner.
12. And another bump! Is it too pricey? Make me an offer...
13.
No real reason, tbh, it's all just wood (usually) & wire. Unless there's something fundamentally wrong with the neck construction of a cheap bass, it can be set up to play just as well as its 4-figure counterpart, electronics & hardware can be replaced fairly inexpensively and more often than not the budget instruments these days are made from halfway-decent quality timber as opposed to the splintery plywood of a few decades ago. I like basses (and g*it*rs  ) in general and like to have lots, and lots, and lots - hence I don't spend very much on individual instruments & I tend not to keep many of them very long. This also helps to explain my fascination with old JapCrap - there were some superb quality instruments which these days don't change hands for huge amounts of money so it's easy to have a varied & interesting vintage collection for the price of a couple of "decent" brand instruments. If I had limitless money I'd doubtless have as many top-end instruments as I do cheap old junk, though... Jon.
+1 I'm much more inclined to be impressed by a cheaper instrument than by an expensive one.
14. Bump for shipping costs! Ahoy!
15. I decided to try and part with my Epi EB0, which i bought new from a local shop less than 2 years ago. Reason is simply that it doesn't suit my playing style, even though i like the sound a lot. It's essentially as new, never gigged, only done a couple of practice sessions and home noodling. I lately put some flatwounds on it (D'addarios or rotosounds, can't remember now), and played it maybe 10 minutes since. I've seen them new for around 120 pounds, so maybe 80 pounds is a reasonable request? Shipping is likely to be around 20-30 pounds for UK, free within 30 miles of Edinburgh
16. 1) Do you welcome a bass specific shop in Scotland Yes it would be great 2) What would you like to see in stock Uncommon and interesting basses and amplification, plenty S/H, spares and parts in general, wider choice of strings makes, types and gauges. The idea of stocking some sample luthier instruments is great, being able to order through it even better. Oh and it would be grand if you did trade-ins. 3) Are you more likely to visit the shop or use our online service I would check online to see what's in, but I need to touch and feel any serious piece of kit i might buy. 4) Roughly how much do you spend on bass goods in a year 500-1k 5) Is this likely to increase if you had a bass shop you could visit? Unfortunately for me, yes... Can't wait for the shop to open...

FOOTSWITCH!!!!

Look on the Peavey forum, and just search for what you need. I have found schematics for a footswitch for my mark III bass head in about 30 secs.
20. My time warp rig, plus the hartke combo and a guitar amp
21. Any interest?
22. Schecter cv-4, made in korea about 2004. Active pre-amp, 4-strings, through-body stringing, a rather thin and fast maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, alder body, Duncan designed pickups, one Musicman-style humbucker at the bridge, one j-style closer the the neck. Extremely versatile, with 3-band eq on board, plus a "slap switch", which automatically scoop the mids and boost the bass, for a very fat and rich slapping sound. You can get truly good rock and funk sounds out of it. Conditions is almost as new. I've never gigged it, and only used for a few band practices. Otherwise kept in the house for home practice. Will take £170 shipped to most of uk, but mainly interested in trades or p/x.

Peavey gear

I've recently acquired a Peavey mark III 400 bass head from the late 70s, and a marshall 1550 cab to go with it. I tend to play my peavey t-40 with it. Time warp. As far from hi-fi as you can probably go, but loud, thumping and warm. Ideal for classic rock. Oh and about 30 years old, in what looks like original condition.
24. Italian manufacturers in the 60's applied the same finishing techniques and styles of accordions to guitars, resulting in this explosion of sparkle and mother-of-ashtray. And i love it. If anyone cares, the only things the text says that's not obvious from the pics is that "it is in perfect working order", "the sound is very powerful (strong output?)". The text next to the italian flag says that the make, Meazzi, was a well established maker in the north of italy (unlike Eko and the likes), and they produced all sorts of musical kit up until a few years ago. They also distributed imported brands. I remember seeing Meazzi guitars and amps in my formative years back in italy...
25. I've seen it, and i agree it looks like the pics you posted. Didn't want to try it in case I found it impossible to part with it. I believe you know the feeling... Live music is a very nice shop with very nice people, and often have unusual pieces for sale. I have bought quite a bit of kit from them.
