"If I don't mention the finish....

Back in the 70's when I was about 5 we had a chest of drawers that had that type of floral stcky back sheet all over it (did I mean sheet or sh*t?) -
I think sometimes GAS can take over and if like me you can't buy until you've sold, some basses etc are sold at lower prices just to get that money quicker. It's similar with part exchanging gear, you will probably get a better price for your gear selling it private than any dealer would give you. Some people on here lower their prices far too quickly IMHO, ok if you need the cash in a hurry then you probably have no other option. The question is, is it devaluing the price of basses. As Clarky said he sold his SG on Ebay for more than it was advertised on here. Budget Bassist, I wouldn't sell my bass any cheaper than what it was worth even to my best mate. I might chuck in some strings etc but at the end of the day I'm not a chartity.

Took a stroll into town today and they had 2 in Darlington Music Center. Idin't check the prices though, oh well I'll just have to go back in tomorrow

Which are the largest and smallest stages you've ever played on?
markytbass replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Smallest would be the Quaker Bar Darlington largest was a flat bed lorry in a field behind the Majors Arms Frome hill Herefordshire. -
These days LTD edition can mean anything, whether its colour, type of wood, hardware or pickup config. For arguments sake if only 500 basses were made unique to any other by that manufacturer then can they be classed as LTD edition? Whether anyone would be prepared to pay more for such a bass would be down to the indavidual (I personally wouldn't). I am a Stingray owner so I may be a bit bias about this but put my standard 2eq 'ray against the LTD one's and the difference would be obvious to me. On the other hand Ive seen LTD basses by other manufacturers and I probably couldn't tell the difference between that and the standard. I do like the look of the MM basses in the link on my last post but as has already been posted if I wanted a stingray in a particular finish I could get a pro refin for a reasonable price

PMT Southend-On-Sea charging £10 for a used cardboard box
markytbass replied to peted's topic in General Discussion
Sounds familiar... One of the music stores near me charges £5 to fit a violin string. Usually the string is around £1 !!!!!! I tell pupils & parents to tell them that, "Dick Turpin" wore a mask. I'll put the string on for nothing
One of my local shops gave me a box for nowt when I needed a bass shipping. But before we all start applauding, the same shop charged me £5 for fitting strings when I took my bass back for the free set up they advertised when I bought it. The set up wasn't even that good. -
There are some more on here http://www.musicmanbass.org/mycustompage0021.htm not for sale but it gives you an idea of other options. I do like the binding and some of the colours are well sweet

The jury is still out on this one for me. I like the look of it, binding etc but would like to see it in the flesh as regards the top. Pictures don't always do the finish any justice.
QUOTE (markytbass @ Jul 13 2008, 11:13 PM) The thing that amazes me is that one venue charges £13 to get in then 2 weeks later you can see the same band in the same town for £5. It's band's responsibility to avoid that happening. If you want to bring a whole load of mates/followers to an "important" gig to impress a booker, agent, whatever, and that gig charges money on the door then manage things so that you don't play the same town for a few weeks either side of that gig, and certainly not for free.
I probably didn't make my point very clear, It was late and I was ready to hit the sack. I don't think the bands get a bad deal at the venues in question but at £13 each I think the punters do. The venue in question is renowned for charging high entrance fee's and as a punter the more money I spend getting in the less I have to spend on ale. £13 for a covers band is too much in my opinion, I saw The Bluetones last November and The Buzzcocks last month (well the two remaining members) for less than a tenner each. I think some bands (originals and covers) expect too much too soon, take the last originals band I gigged with for example, they were a bit over ambitious and the guitarist booked us a couple of giggs (just us no one else). We ended up playing to two empty house's and due to a contract that he signed we owed them at the end of the night. We would have been better off doing support slots for free.
To go along with my Sky music rant, I have one more that relates to music...playing it live to be precise. "Semi-professionals" who seriously undermine and devalue live music by playing gigs (I'm predominantly talking function type gigs or background music etc, not originals) for £20-£30 each as of course they can afford to do this as they are well paid in their careers. I did a gig the other week and the bar manager says he can get a 6 piece for the money we did as a trio (£150) £50 each for 1h 30 mins straight through, which should have been two 45 min sets (never mind the cost of getting to and from the gig) and they are ""much better". Well, everyone I played with knows that isn't true, they aren't "much better" because they can't really play very well, but yes they have amazing gear, but this is about it when it comes to their set. It's hard enough making it as a working musician, but to be expected to do a gig for £15 and a meal is a joke to be honest. Does this bother anyone else? Are you somebody that does this? Is it actually just bar managers that are idiots!? Generally interested in peoples opinions from both sides of the fence.
It depends on what you define as a semi-pro band. I know a few people with day jobs who play in bands in the evenings and weekends who get paid more than I would get for doing overtime. I would class them as semi-pro. I have done those gigs for £20-30 which due to the car I was driving at the time was mere diesel money. I didn't make any profit so didn't class myself as being semi-pro, more amature. Since moving to the North of England I've seen more live music in the last 2 years than the last 10. It didn't take me long to see which venues pay well and which didn't. The amature bands that ive been in either played at open mic nights or did the £20-30 gigs. At the end of the day if I were in a semi-pro band I wouldn't even bother turning up for that money but until I am I will. The good venues tend to be picky about who plays and for the money they pay I don't blame them. The thing that amazes me is that one venue charges £13 to get in then 2 weeks later you can see the same band in the same town for £5.

What about a wham bar a highland toffee and half a jar of bulls eye's.

The guy I bought my combo from had an AGB200, I also played one when I went to Edinburgh last year. I didn't realise they were shortscale . Scot Morriss from The Bluetones plays a Gretsch Thunder Jet, I saw them last November in Darlo'. He had a real nice sound from it, I looked into buying one last week but cant afford that sort of cash at the mo.
Raising the action on a Stingray is a bit like castrating it. It loses it's top end and all the balls that make it sound so good in the first place. A bit of string buzz is all part of the fun.
+1 It's all part of the Stingray tone

When I bought my Fernandes Jazz there were some Jazz basses in the shop that had full plastic pick guards. I'm sure they were Squier's and it was around 1995. I have also seen onother of these Fenders with the plastic PG.
-
My first bass was a late 80's Jap Fender P' bass in sunburst with a maple neck and white pick guard. I later had the bass resprayed met blue and then part ex'd it for a Fernandes Jazz.

Where's the correct place fora thumb rest on a Jazz?

If you google fender jazz bass images you'll find some. -
John Deacon wrote a bit for Queen – a few classic hits as well including "You're My Best Friend" and "Another One Bites the Dust"
And he wrote "I want to break free". I think he also did some sound track work as did JPJ.

I used to have a set off Rotosound Jass flats on my stingray. I think they sound brighter than other brands so I still got that stingray tone. I now have Rotosound Tru Bass black nylon flats and I love the sound, its hard to explain but you can still tell its a ray. I also have Tru Bass strings on my Jazz.

I sold my met black one last year for £120, I wish I hadn't. Had I not just bought a Jazz I would snatch it up at that price.
