1. I'm selling my BB414 it's in good condition a few surface scratches on the back and a small ding on the neck. I have put it on ebay to see how it goes but I am open to offers. Not in too much of a rush to sell but have bought a new bass and this is surplus to requirements. I can email any more pictures if required. Cheers
2.
I played a Highway One Jazz in Dawsons, Reading yesterday - it was set up like a dawg and the strings were way heavier than I usually use, but it was OK and I suppose reasonably good value. Something a bit weird though, it sounded like it was running through an octaver...this is the best way I can put it. I used to have an EBS pedal that reproduced the same note an octave down and this is kind of what it sounded like. I tried it through three amps (all Roland) and it was the same through all of them. I've owned an Aerodyne Jazz previously and my Waterstone 12 has two pickups, but neither of them produced this kind of growl. Played several Jazzes in the US last year and didn't hear it any of those, so I'm wondering what it was that was producing this sound. To be honest, I really liked it! P
It may be the amps, some of the rolands have sound modeling (basicaly an onboard effects unit) it may have been better to try it through a different brand of amp. That said the newer highway 1 basses have a tone control that fender call a grease bucket, this may be giving the effect you are talking about. I have only played on the older highway with the standard fender bridge and that one just sounded like a normal jazz to me.
3. I am in the process of looking for a used 4 string thumb. just wondering what to look for ie where the serial numbers are and how to date them and how much they go for?. Cheers
4.
Warwicks tend to be quite expensive to begin with and arn't niche enough to hold their prices well, I think. In my experience with Warwicks, they don't hide wear and tear well due to them not having paint and lacquer to hide it, maybe this puts people off?
I played a Warwick dolphin SN at Sound Control in Stockton. It had chips of wood missing from the fretboard, it was quite noticeable even when it was hung on the wall.
5. It depends on what I am selling and it's value. If I were selling any of my kit I would put a reserve because I know what it's worth and would rather it didn't sell than let it go for peanuts(that said the 2 basses ive got aren't worth much anyway). Reserves have never put me off, yes I research and see how much things are worth 2nd hand or new. My local music shop has 2 Stingrays a 2 eq sunburst for £850 and a 3eq white for £900 (both used but in good nick). Others Ive seen in shops seem to be about the same price. I tend to use this as a bench mark on Ebay, if there is a reserve depending on where the bass is (is it in collection range) and other factors depends on how much I would be willing to bid. If bidding went over say £700 and the reserve was not met then I would probably just go and buy the one in the shop rather than risk damage in transit or finding out that the bass is an Encore with Fender decals etc. I suppose I'm looking for a new bass at the right time as no one seems to be bidding much at the mo.
6. I bet John is spinning.
7.
Let's bombard him with low offers. I'll give him a fiver for it
Someone did when it was on last time check out the old listing and see the 1 offer.
8. I wouldn't say depressing, desperate or stupid depending on the situation. If quick cash was needed and the bass was not needed or used anymore then selling it may be the only option. That said with something like a stingray I would put a reserve on or it could go for peanuts. There is another stingray 140158093323 on for £500 there is a buy it now of £850 but that will vanish as soon as someone bids as there is no reserve.
9. Another one gone cheap,http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220150799926&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012 It was too far for me to collect so didn't bid.
10. Didn't reach the reserve, probably go back on soon.
11. I might phone them up on Monday and ask them if they can make me one like that. What a bunch of muppets, if I were the manager and I saw this someone would get the sack
12. I was intending to buy a Stingray but too many other basses clouding my vision. I saw these, and seeing as I don't live too far from Gateshead I was having 2nd thoughts. My theory with ebay is that if I'm going to spend that sort of cash I would want to go and collect it so that I could inspect it first (common sence I suppose).
13. The one I've been looking at has a birdseye maple neck, it also has a 4 bolt neck joint and a bullet truss rod adjuster. Just waiting for the cash now.
14. Cheers obbm very good site, money should be through by end of month. Not looking for a new one as they are out of my price range. Seen some nice 2nd hand, just wanted to know what I was buying. Anyone else have any pointers (what to look for what to avoid etc) that would be great. Cheers
15. Can anyone give me any advice on how to tell the age of a stingray. The wife is going to buy me a new bass, so we went stingray shopin today. I was just wondering if anyone has any info on serial numbers etc. Cheers M
16. +1 for Foxton & Buckler, Deacon & Taylor. What about Phil & Brian (Thin Lizzy).
17. A 5 string ATK has just come up on ebay if anyone is interested. Item no 110168364520. It has the jazz pickup in addition to the 3coil bucker
18. Have they got the same sort of fat neck that the rickenbacker's have?. Just that I was looking to buy a ricky about a month ago but was put off by the tree trunk neck. Were the designers at rickenbacker frightened that the neck might snap or something.
19. I have a BB414 and I love the neck similar to the cort gb bass I have. I had this crazy idea about gettin a Rickenbacker about a month ago, but soon changed my mind when I actually played one. Now thats a fat neck, it felt like I was playing a 6 string with only 4 strings.
20. What bits are you stuck on?
21. I tried a Burns Bison yesterday at Steven James, Middlesborogh. Nice bass not to heavy the neck was good not too fat. The horns didn't really get in the way though they do kook a little odd. The pickup selector is a twist knob and doesn't really tell you which pickups you've selected. It also has a switch which is marked A/B' this seems to be a phase switch (series, parallel sort of thing). Good solid bass nice sound pick guard was a bit warped and needed more screws (in my opinion).
22. 34 playing since I was 16/17. Play 4 string only, tried 5 but found I only use the top low B as a thumb rest (can't see the point in all those strings and a neck like a cricket bat just for an extra 5 notes). Play finger style can't get on with a pick, fussy about my tone. Like to be funky can slap but never live. I have been in loads of bands some good times some bad (made some good friends along the way, usually not in the same band though). Mainly indie rock but trying to expand on that, done the grundge and metal thing. Love playing bass but currently not in a fully formed band so not practiced with a band for months now. Hopefully this will change in the next few weeks. Like John Entwistle, Norman Watt-Roy, Flea, Mani, Jo Lally, Phil Lynott, John Deacon (probably the bloke that first influenced me to play bass), Macca, Gerry Bryant and Morgan Nicholls to name a few.
23.
Well golly-gosh wow! Danged if it isn't another Ibanez! And he only wants £750 for it! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=290150285200 Blink and you'll miss it ...
You can get a proper ric for that, used obviously but a proper one. I saw a blue burst 4003 on ot the bay yesterday buy it now for £899. It wasn't on for long.
24. I have looked on the net and www.imuso.co.uk are selling 3 burns basses the bison £360, the marquee £310-320 and a ltd edition (john rostill) shadows bass which is more than double the price at £799.
25. They had a black bison in Steven James Music in Middlesborogh when I was in there last. I prefer the shape of the Marquee bass personally. I'm not sure how the electronics differ but it is onlt a 32" scale as opposed to the 34" of the Bison.
