Hi all, Looking at starting a new musical adventure - well a drummer and I have been talking about it for long enough! It will just be me and the drummer. Anyone else done this sort of thing before? Obviously there's the doom band OM, who are great. What have you used in terms of gear, I'm thinking of using my AB/Y box and two amps with different FX on each. Any tips on filling the sound out, don't want it to sound empty - if that's the right word? Cheers!

So what lined fretless Precision basses have/do Fender produced? I love playing fretless but i'm not so good when the lines aren't there lol.

I played on that same bass yesterday. It looked great, I agree with the feel of the neck. I didn't enjoying playing it as much as I thought. It's put me right off buying one. I much prefered playing on the Burns Bison bass they had there. I just don't think the T-Bird Pro's sound of the way it plays is for me - my main bass is a fretless fender jazz. Also just to add, the price was £349 - which I think is the same as some on-line retailers? The Gibson T-bird sitting next to it was about £950. Also had some Tokai's for about £300.

Damn it! Must have some sort of copyright issue. I will get the recordings from the Beeb and put them up!
I have done a lot with my MIM fretless. I then had the fingerboard epoxied by a Dutch luthier:
That looks very nice! How much was it to get your fingerboard epoxied? How much difference did it make to overal sound? It looks really nice with the black pickguard. My bass is sunburst with a white pickguard - have been thinking about changing it for ages, but never decided on what to change to!

Thanks for all your suggestions guys - keep them coming! I really like my low action on the fretless, so I think I will leave replacing the bridge for now. I'm going to look into getting some Wizards pups - not sure which set i want yet, I like the description of the 'Hammer' anyone on here tried it?
They haven't been around that long....
lol its not even new, its 2nd hand and the strings had a bit of rust on them lol

Have you done this? Which ones have you used/recomend out of the; Sixty-Fours Eighty-Fours Hammers. I like the description of the Hammers.

In an attempt to ease a case of GAS for another bass, I was thinking about making some improvements to my Fender Jazz bass. It's a MIM Fretless Jazz, made around 2000. I've never replaced anything on it and have owned it from new. I don't know a thing really about upgrading pickups, bridges, nuts etc. So I am wondering if any one can recomend some modifications or has done any themselves to a similar bass? I really like the sound I get out of it, but I'm thinking it sometimes could do with a bit more balls! Cheers!
I guess they've got it wrong. Unfortunately someone who hasn't done their homework may well buy it.
they get it wrong all the time! They should defo go on the list with The Bass Cellar!

Even 30 seconds is far too long! I just went in to have a play on it. I think i only go in there to try and get a rise. Then plugged me into a crap guitar amp when asked why can't i go into that Ashdown i'm sat on, he mumbled something like I would if you were going to buy it lol. Then asked why it was so much, was told because its made in Korea lol. Asked him about the New Thunderbird pro, he said they're crap, but oh they've not had them in, but they're crap because they're made in China. I told him their spec was really similar to a Gibson Thunderbird AND its got a through neck, nope they're crap they're made in China. I HATE THAT SHOP!

I dont know too much about Epi Thunderbirds, just wondering why this one would cost £400? When you get the new Epi Pro Series for £375? They've told me its made in Korea Circa 2004 it has an Alder body, Epiphone standard T-B humbuckers. Black hardware and a bolt maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. I'm thinking its not worth £400...

What if you spend £500 on a bass and don't even like playing bass? As someone earlier said, buy a bass that isnt as expensive and use the rest for some lessons. I see little point in buying something so expensive when you can't even play the thing. Would you buy a Ferrari to learn to drive in? Once you feel more confident in your playing abilities and know more about bass in general, you will actually be able to make a more informed decision for your next bass. You'll know what feels good and doesn't feel so good and you will have a better idea of what sound you like. Trade in the 1st bass and then get something at the next level above.

Spoke to PMT in Leeds today. They said they dont know when they are coming in as Gibson UK are the supplier and they have no idea when they will send them, or how many etc. They did say however, they can put an order in for one if you put a deposit down 10%. This is REFUNDABLE, so if you dont like the bass you get your money back. They said if they put one on order, it should arrive faster than not placing an order - you would bloody hope so lol

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life, pretty much the whole album. Most of the tracks on it are one or two riffs over and over, but the bass just sounds so good on it! The bass and drums really drive all those songs along, guitar and keyboards give each song that little extra.

My band are looking to play venues further a field. We're based in South Yorkshire, so we play Sheffield/Doncaster/Barnsley quite a fair bit. We are looking to play cities such as Leeds/Manchester/Nottingham/Birmingham. Obviously I'll be looking into this myself, but just wondering if anyone can pass on any local knowledge - of good venues and promoters/scenes in those cities. Cheers!

Quick bump on this thread! My band The Bedford Incident recorded three tracks last night with the BBC, was great fun! Pretty nervous but our 1st take on one of the tracks was a keeper! Spent more time setting up than playing lol - then had a nice little interview! You will be able to listen to this tomorrow, Thursday 1st October HERE, it's on the Raw Talent Show, 7pm till 10pm with Iain Hodgson. I dont expect any of you to listen to it lol, but I will be posting up our live session some time soon and would appreciate comments back on it!
I suspect it'll feel similar to a standard Gibson what with it being neck through and having the Gibsons slimmer and smaller dimensions on the neck. The bog standard Epi is 1.73" width at nut compared to the Pro's/Gibsons's being 1.5".
It's having facts like this which makes me laugh at not so reputable music shops like Wizard Guitars (Eccy Road, Sheffield)... when they tell me the Epi T-bird IV Pro is just a bog standard Epiphone T-Bird with different pups.
The feel of it can't be that different to a standard T-bird can it? So maybe it would be fine to try a standard one?
I guess so... but I reaally like both the black and natural finish, so want to make sure which I like the most
-
hmmm not all that helpful is it! How are customers supposed to know if they really want it if they can't even play it? Has anyone got one of these yet?
-
Spoke to Wizard Guitar last night and they don't have them, but they have a 2004 Epi T-bird in stock (£200), which they tell me (and did several times) is a lovely bass and would be just as good...
Off the top of my head I can't think of anywhere else, since Sound Control in Leeds was demolished. Is there anywhere in Sheffield that might? EDIT: Give PMT in Leeds a ring. They'r Gibson and Epiphone stockists but their website is pretty poor. EDIT AGAIN: Gear4music in York have the five string listed on their website. www.gear4music.com
thanks I will try PMT in Leeds.
