1. Of course they'll work well in that area. Only reason you see loads of metal players with em is because they don't cost too much, but yet give you all you could want in a decent bass...Plus the name Ibanez attracts them anyway. However, they are so much more than a "metal" bass, in fact any bass can be used anywhere. I use a Yamaha TRB6II, hardly a metal bass, but I like it's playability and tone, so I use it. So yep, the SR will work for you, no matter what and yes, they really are damn good as well! :-) Think of them as the Jazz Bass of Ibanez, work horses.
2. @ a gig where all bands are having separate sound checks before the gig starts. Sound guy is outside for 10 mins smoking and a band has set up ready, making the sound check now 10 mins late, all the bands up to now have been using combos. Were up last, a progressive band and have head and cab combinations as well as effects units, in the midst of setting up when we get: "Can you hurry it up please, we're running late" I understand start times but DAMN that does my nut in! :-/
3. Same as my very 1st bass many years ago, but this is in better nick haha! Worth adding, the tone and playability on these is fantastic for the price.
4. Ah these have vanished off the planet it seems! Let's not forget the 35" scale length and if I remember, the "Slap Switch"? Nice and aggressive bass. Steal at that price too.
5. Still have mine, best bass I ever bought. Solid 6-string and no mistake.
6.
Dirk Lance - For the pure tone and great playing
OMG yes! I ain't listened to any early Incubus in ages...I remember the 1st time I heard Speak Free and later, Redefine...his playing blew me away! That nice "toothy" tone he has as well I love. (Listen to Deep Inside, you'll hear the tone and understand right away by "toothy")
7. Les Claypool - Got hardcore into Primus after a very bad part in my life...I realised that I should push further on my playing, and after gettin a Primus DVD for Christmas and watching it every day, I started saving for a 6-string, and I never looked back... My playing has changed much, but Claypool is still there! Stuart Hamm - One listen to this guy and I though "Hey, that sounds like my tapping!" Obviously, it's really the other way around. :-p So, I got into his stuff and expanded on it...I guess I owe him a lot when it comes to two handed tap style. This is amazing stuff to do on a 6-string! Billy Sheehan - Love him or hate him, he's a smart and influential bassist...His gear and technique blow me away, because it's all for reason and he explains why, from his use of compression, DIY stereo pickup system to his 3-finger technique...I can't use the 3,2,1 way he does it but still. He also got me to finally look into P-basses and now one of my favourite is one that I built myself. Steve Harris - 1st inspiration...accidentally learned my 3-finger technique by making the mistake loads of people do...he doesn't use 3 fingers, only two! But hey, never mind. Iron Maiden songs aren't the hardest thing to play but they are also not easy either, especially for a starter...I didn't think this way when I started and learned as many of their songs as I could...Invaders can still be a test of stamina now! Ryan Martinie - Thought I'd throw someone different in...Unfortunately under-rated. Bassist of Mudvayne, my 1st venture into Progressive / Math metal (even though they are called "Nu-Metal")...his tone is unique and technique outstanding! Lets face it, Mudvayne WAS Ryan Martinie!
8. *says nothing*
9.

Yup that too...a tad shreddy tho, got bored of that a few years ago...although it seems the Onomatopoeia "Djent" has tunred into a sub-genre? Expect tonnes of hate but I love it! Why complain when metal moves when you complained it hasn't moved right?
10.
fan of prog metal here. I was so excited for this band, after hearing all the tracks by Bulb. the album blowed. some nice riffs and tasty tones, but by god are the vocals whiney and ball-less. after hearing bulbs tracks, it feels like he took it down a notch for periphery.
Man I'm listenin to this album, the track Insomnia is gonna keep me up it's INSANE!!! I've heard much worse vocals and I agree with u on Bulb, but it's the bass drum and the Djented guitars thats getting me...VERY CLOSE, to crashing my head throguh my monitor this is bloody crazy! It's like SiKTH + Meshuggah (Minus the repeated octave abuse) = Epic win!!! Jeez...this is a sick album...After Fear Factory's "Mechanize" I didn't think anything else could entertain me this year...yet these guys are friggin awesome. To keep on topic, here's the track I said about as I am currently listening to it. HEAVY!!!
11. Periphery - Icarus Lives OMG Prog Metal is gettin INSANELY heavy! I do love prog but sometimes it's a tad wussy...if you get me? I like all things around Metal as much as the next music fan but I always felt Prog could benefit from being a bit heavier and less cheesy and without the 7 minute keyboard solo's...I'm not a fan of solo's much, I prefer rhythm...and these guys have done it! Not the 1st, but this sure is the best I've heard in a long time... and OMG I absolutely LOOOOOVE Djented guitars! *Djent Djent Djent*...Mmmm tasty tone! Have a listen. N.B. If u don't enjoy Prog Metal or Metal in any form save yourself the hastle, don't click play. Although I know you Jazzers are often interested in prog, whether you admit it or not. But alas, I'm chewing you ears off...JUST CLICK PLAY!
12.
I was actually talking about the new ones which are out in September. Nobodys had the chance to play them yet.....but everybody wants one.
TBH from testing almost every Squier made in recent years I'm confident these will be top notch...the quality has skyrocketed...and I'm not easily pleased! Just ONE raised fret and that's it...time to put it down...Not had that in any Squier of recent personally, tho some may have...but then also had this in USA Fenders so...can slip through QC I guess.
13. I'll give you one link...and you can do the rest, I've been using these guys for about 5 years now surely and the customer service is 2nd to none. Get pretty much anything you want, even hard to come by DR's, Warwick Black Label / Dark Lord, Any Roto set you could wish for and they deal in various scale's too...and accessories and...Oops might wanna curb your spending! www.stringsdirect.co.uk
Similar experiences here. You should try buying for a 6-string bass. Then you actually get treated like a leper!
Reason why I used these guys so long, been a 6-string player almost exclusively for 5 years now. Plenty of choice, tried all but Warwick black Label, which I am about to test very soon.
14. Can't fault him...grew up watching MANY Queen concerts at home that my dad watched on the good old VHS... I think he did the best thing ever not joined Freddie-less Queen, it's a joke! It also shows he can move on and doesn't need Queen to do what he does.
15.
skimmed through the blog and watched one youtube clip - sounds good to me! i'm in the process of something similar myself in fact http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPyZCsvgM10 peace c
Very nice man...coulda warned me of the bass u are playing in it...GAS ATTACK!!!
16.
BRX's band would suit a Precision absolutely fine. In my opinion, it would take more than a debate about their instruments to make them sound good. But opinions are like an arsehole, everybody has one. etc.
Took a listen for the 1st time (why aint I before) and I agree, the P-bass sound would fit like a glove here...
17.
Hi all Does andyone know where you can get single coloured bass strings in the UK? I know that DR do singles in the states but I'm really struggling to find anyone that does them over here, all that we seem to have access to is 4 or 5 packs (which tend to be quite pricy). I no-one knows of anywhere then would you be interested in buying singles if they were available? I've pinged DR an email to say they should find a distributor for them over here. If plenty of people reply to this then we might be able to get a distributor to look into stocking them. Just a thought. Cheers Pete
www.stringsdirect.co.uk Huge selection of DR strings with more than enough customer support to boot...hell they know who I am from voice! Been using em for 5 years now...
18.
I'd be happy to relic it for another £200. I'm a dab hand with the Black & Decker.
Don't do that!!! Such AWESOME condish...
19.
Ah man i know, when i first got it i didn't want to turn the pages I'm really glad i'm not a fender man cause his collection is obscene, i'm sure in one photo he's propping a door open with a really old jazz bass..... Any hoo this is now sold pending payment.
That's why I warned the triggering, I AM a Fender man. He has a slab precision in that that is built from 3 of them he smashed up...smashed up!? They are well rare now and he made one from 3. But most of his collection he has them in pairs and so if u love Fenders, u get madly GASed up. Gz on sale, owners gonna love it, and patrol the for sale section for life!
20.
Isn't maple a soft wood? Hence why you don't see maple fretlesses very often.
Yeah it's a soft wood, but it's also quite dense and I think it's this quality of it that makes it feel hard I think. I also think maple feels hard, even tho it's soft. Go figure.
21. with £300 you could get an awesome 1st bass, even a very well built one.
22. That's what I like to hear! It's a journey you can't get anywhere else. Enjoy.
23. Les Claypool, Stuart Hamm and Marcus Miller are top in my slap list. Victor Wooten yes but, in small doses these days. It's worth learning to gain double thump tho, which I think has way more uses than Wooten gives it, I'm still expanding on it to this day (being able to play triplets without using finger style for example for different dynamic play).
24. Legit wear and tear (extreme buckle rash too lol!), looks like whoever played it frequents from 1st to 7th fret quite a lot judging by the back of the neck...
25. I recently had to change the neck on my P-bass which on a pinch was unfortunately from a maple FB to a Rosewood FB neck. I've always preferred Maple on P-basses for the "Snap" it adds, and when I switched the necks over I immediately noticed it had gone without wondering why, I forgot what a difference it made I was confused for a while. Rosewood gives it slightly more "Beef", but I'm missing the "Snap". So with changing a neck for the 1st time in ages whilst leaving everything the same (Including the strings at the time), the tonal difference was huge for me. Anyone got a decent maple P-bass neck at all...no?
