It has to be maple for me...I love maple necks.
MAPLE!!! Let it be said...Lets make ALL fingerboards Maple!
  2. For the Glam Rock route you wish in sound the DiMarzio Model P should do well. There's the Will Power which I use, but that's more super hot output foe metal / hard rock etc etc. The Seymour Duncan Basslines 1/4 pound Split-P is another good choice. What's the other pickup style?
  3.
I'm sure I saw in one clip he was playing with four. Stood there rock solid (almost like he was asleep) but with all the plucking fingers going and a left hand leaving scorch marks across the fretboard.
Looks that way but no. Your little finger will always move with the ring finger. In order to use 4 fingers your hand would have to limp over so it can reach.
  4. What idiot would wear off the head of a truss rod nut? I mean, it's not a cross head, Allen keys slot in... I have never changed one though.
  5. I thought this would have gone by now. Does no one want punchy mids round here? Ignor the name, nothing wrong with Ibanez...Look at this dude! He's schooled in Jazz and he's using an SRX! His tone isn;t as punchy but that's cause his strings are dead and he sets his EQ that way.
  6.
I'm no expert... on anything... but I have to agree with Kongo. That picking arm's way too tense. I can't see you lasting more than a few minutes with that technique without cramping, or at least getting serious arm fatigue. Not unless you've got the arms of a nuclear baboon. Loosen off and play from the wrist. Hard to tell from the video, but chances are if your arm's that tense, your hand's pretty tense too. Relax your grip on the pick -- counterintuitively, you're less likely to drop it that way! Try out some different picks as well. One man's meat is another man's poison and all that. I use these bad boys in 1.14 mm thickness, but other people have tried them and can't use them at all. Conversely, I know people who use these, but I can't get the hang of them. Experimentation is the name of the game. I can safely say that you should avoid Wedgie Rubbers for heavy stuff. I tried them once (I know, I know, stupid idea ), and I could wear through a single pick in 30 minutes, leaving my scratchplate looking like I'd sketched something on it and then rubbed it out. Rubber everywhere. Nice sound though. Kinda finger-ish, but not worth the continued expense...
Well when you use the arm techneque your wrist stays perpendicular so yeah, a tensed arm would mean an tensed wrist. When I DO use a pick, as rare on bass as it is, I use the same as I use on guitar...The good old, hard to come by...Jim Dunlop Jazz III. Very small picks and not exactly the thickest in the world but TBH I think thick pics don't work too well on bass. The black ones are thicker than the red...You'll see many shredders uses these too...guitarists that is.
  7.
Wow, sunburst. Breaking the mould.
Just Fender doing what Fender do...U-TURN!!!
  8.
If it's got body binding I'm guessing it's a Roadstar II, maybe like this: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/84/3.jpg Or maybe the ones at the bottom of this page: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/102/2.jpg If it's in good nick £220 is probably not unreasonable - even better if they'll haggle! 80s Ibanez probably represent the pinnacle of affordable, original JapCrap & remember these were built by Fujigen Gakki, who at the same time were producing MIJ Fenders. Very good stuff. Jon.
Always makes me giggle how "JapCrap" is a term used to exaplin such instruments. It sounds like an insult but it's not. Anyways, any Ibanez stuff is worth getting, expacially from the 80's! If I could afford, I'd love some of the old pre-lawsuit Ibanez Jazz basses.
  9.
This question has been asked before and never had a satisfactory answer....in fact,...as far as I know, never had an answer,...so can those that describe Ashdown cabs as sounding wooly....describe "wooly",....c'mon surely you know what you mean, I don't, so enlighten me. (and others)
Ha whoa, what grabbed your Ashdown nuts today? Anyways, here's wooly in my mind: NO high end zing to start with. Mid range seems dead and unresponsive Low end flabby, farty and not defined / tight EVERYONE knows what wooly means...it's a term called because it sounds like you've put a VERY heavy wooly jumper over it!
  10.
Happened to me recently when I ordered some music software for the school at which I work. After half a week of waiting, the status turned to "out of stock" . Very disappointing. After an angry email, it actually arrived quite promptly. Regards Mike
It's a shame that you have to do that...Sometimes they get cocky back though and say something like "Your pacience is greatly appreciated"... Yeah well, when YOU have my money for nothing and won't give it back until 7 working days I'm gonna be angry...especially as a shop gives it there and then... Haha, hey! Let's try this one next time...Order something over the phone so you have some options in what you can say and then tell them when it comes to payment "I shall pay you in 7 days after the item arrives"
  11. Also an early shredder too. Some of his lines were stupid fast, and he'd use 3 fingers too...And also used a basic form of what we called today "2 handed tapping" but in our modern piano style. And to top it off, he was a mega tone freak and also had the worst case of GAS I've ever seen! His pad was wall to wall with guitars, basses....AND AMPS!!! I got the John Entwistle Collection hardback...It's a book with most of his collection in there from Fenders, Gibsons...right down to some oddball names. Check it out.
  12.
To my ear, light strings make the higher strings noticeably sweeter, without losing tone on the bottom. That said, I doubt I would go lighter than the .125 on the B string I use at the moment for tension reasons.
Good point actually...When I went Drop-B on a 4-string some time ago, I actually found, although I HATED how loose the string was, that the .110 E-string, now low-B, sounded better than a .130 Low-B. But then what you say is true, a thicker string needs more tension to get to the same note as a lighter string, so you loose definition. They introduced taperwound strings to allow low-B and thick E strings to freely move but...I don't like em. Loose at the bridge and tight at the nut...they just don't feel right. Nice to see a fellow SYL fan around here though. Got Devy's new album yet? Glad he's back man.
  13.
+1 Red-good Sunburst-bad

+1 I was well stoked when I read the thread name, Id love that red one. I hate sunburst.
+1 Missed out on some basses in the past cause they were Sunburst...Ah go away! Who thought that painting a guitar / bass the same colours as the insides of a cigarette would look good?
  14.
+1, I used to use a similar model which AFAIK was the same but with a built in SMX compressor, and it used to eat drummers and guitarists for breakfast.
If you want to instil fear into any guitarist, and exite your drummer...bring a Trace Elliot to the party!

  16.
I just noticed Ibanez has released this, in the fine tradition of bass/guitar hybrids like the Fender VI: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/eu/news/f_products...e/SR7VIISC.html
Yeah it was on their site early this year. Japan only though.
  17.
Hey guys. I have been neglecting a bass playing technique for a long time, which is picking, i have decided in a black metal project to do Vocals and bass. However i couldnt do all those 300BPM songs using fingers, so a pick is in order I have no idea on what constitutes as good pick technique, I chose the lower arm moving type technique. Here is a video of it as is it. Please remember this is pretty much my first attempt at using a plectrum on a bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfvIc5hS-wM If you have hard trouble hearing me skip to 3:08. I play heavier there. As you can probably hear, i am having problems with consistancy. Comments and critiscms welcome. I am here to learn! Cheers! Rob.
I learned to use a pick from playing guitar...it's not a no-no on bass in my eyes. ok lets have a look! First off man, maybe not but from here...relax! it's fast but tensed arms? That's gonna hurt and slow you down! 2nd of all, even on bass, more wrist less arms. Flick your hand up and down in a picking motion, now your arm...Which one has less travel? use the wrist in very small movements. Playing near the bridge is good! Strings nice and tight here so you get some resistance. Metronome is good to practise to. Get consistant sound slow and then build it up. With a pick it's eaier to play something fast because the note is gone before you could register how wrong it was. Play slow and see how even you can play, more rhythm than dynamics first. That's enough for now. If you learn to use 3 fingers this stuff is easy enough without the pick but pick is another techneque and if you feel better playing this with it then why not? Oh yeah, an try to get non-tapered strings like thick Low-E's and Low-B's as they pick better and allow you to "Palm Mute"...Chick in some distortion and you'll blow Meshuggah away with your chugging!!! Enjoy!
  18. You sold the BTB!? MADNESS!!!
  19.
Honestly, I find it rather funny that you think 12 hours isn't enough for these basses . Not trying to be awkward but honestly man if you just held an MTD, you don't even need to play it to realize that they are built to perfection. This is totally in regards to MTD basses, Sadowsky's I know can be hit and miss but I doubt you'll find many disappointed NYC owners on here and they wouldn't say no to a second or third. Each player has their own idea of perfection, it's just some are lucky enough to have a vendor to pass their ideas on to and proceed to get their dream bass.
I'm just speaking generally, not about MTD alone. But MTD are not my kinda bass so it's doubtful I'll lay hands on one soon.
  20. Now THAT is how a Jazz should be! MM / J! Finish a bit bright but I recon folks will dig it.

    Ibanez basses
the headstock doesn't seem to fit well:
No it don't!!!
  22.
IMHO I think MTD, Sadowsky, Valenti and a few others are generally the best at putting out such astonishing basses as quick as they do, especially when compared to the waiting lists for Fodera, Alembic and CT. Also the aforementioned vendors have considerably cheaper prices compared to the latter. 12 hours doesn't seem much but honestly my 535 is truly unique, I'm still yet to find a similar one.
Sadowsky are a prime example! Great basses, yes I do like them...kind of an overpriced Fender though but I do like them...But £2000 for a 12 hour job or whatever when you could go to someone else and have it built to perfection...My own work place annoys me cause I like quality, but everything is rushed, quick as can be, then you pay through the nose for it! I'd rather do something perfect from start to finish. So THIS is why I've played some high end basses with intonation problems? This thread has opened my mind and made me a bit more choosy on what I buy next...Learn something new every day.
  23.
Trust me, pick up a 535 or 635 and you will not care how long it took to build, they are truly one of the best boutique basses out there.
Not my style TBH. Not complaining about them just...y'know, the "handbuilt" price factor on some basses now leaves me to question.
  24. Ok, results in... It bangs on any pickup selected and even bangs when everything is turned down...remember, even mute it still sounds faintly and get this: Hum feedback!? Yes that's right...by touching any metal part this guitar rings some NASTY feedback and the notes actually change depending on where you touch it! It was funny for a while like but...what in the HELL is up with this guitar? Any idea now? I might strap it up and ask my mate to record it tonight at practise so you can see for yourself...it's crazy!
  25.
Only 12 hours? Wow, I thought it would be a hell of a lot more. A fully handmade instrument takes a lot more time to build.
Carl Thompson basses take years to arrive and they are handbuilt...so above basses must be heavily tool based! What IS handbuilt this leads to question...12 hours is too quick man... Or is it 12 hours over a few days / weeks to let things set?
