woodyratm replied to woodyratm's topic in General Discussion
I`d be in a state of constant worry if those three basses were mine, and out on loan. Thumbs up to you for being that brave!
+1 I do have a bass on loan - a pink johnston jazz. Dont mind that. But wow. -
Bump. Trades are welcome for a really nice quality fretless 5 string, I can add cash as required. I'm also possibly interested in a Stingray 5 string, this must be either sunburst, natural or white finish though.
Damn - Wrong amount of strings and colour! Bump! -
I thought this said effects used by rastarat. slightly disappointed now
Everyone has their own motives and agendas for owning instruments, each to his own. OP -your initial question revieled that you wern't in a position to make a decision that you are comfortable with. Maybe not enough info available yet ? If finances aren't driving the agenda, why not wait until you are sure about what to do ? would it hurt to hold onto it until then ?
well they are and they aren't. not enough for me to rush the sale/trade. -

Hi guys, You may have seen a thread with me fighting with myself about what to do about this bass. Think I've finally decided. Maybe. Looking to sell it or trade against something else (amp wise probs, but suggestions on basses too). I've had it for several years and have gigged it as long. I'm just not getting the use I'd like since I'm much more happier playing my Lakland. I've also got a new bass being built which covers the ray base. So with a VERY heavy heart - this is too good of bass to be sitting around not being used. Serial is E30951. There is a small ding on the body where something fell and dunted it, sadly. Comes with proper EBMM case. Also has a Hipshot Extender fitted. I think I still have the original machine head also. Looking for [s]£730ish [/s] £650! Any questions feel free to let me know. Dave

What do you do with basses you don't play?
I have managed to scale down my collection to three basses and they all get use every week. Before scaling down I did own 6 basses at one point, which for me at that time was excessive. All were top end instruments and it did pain me to cull three of them. But, I had to be sensible and decide which ones weren't being used the most and release the funds into other kit that I really needed at the time and also take a much deserved and overdue holiday with my partner! I still have the three survivors from that cull after very careful considerations… I wanted to keep the Lakland because it's a good work horse and it is able to cover a lot of bases for me. Lakland must have been thinking about me when they designed the profile of the neck because it feels really great to me. This bass has had a very hard life living with me, but it has always remained consistent and reliable. It has probably been my most favourite instrument I have ever owned and also the most reasonably priced. It's quite special too...painted Inca Silver (uber rare for a 55-02), original Bart pickups and it's #54 ever made! The Thumb is just an incredible and stable instrument. It’s a heck of a lot of fun to play and is a popular bass with a lot of people that I work with because of its really barky tone. It's a 4 string and I need a break from the 5's once in a while. The MTD 535-24 is very much a house cat. It never sees a gig, rarely travels and I fundamentally only use it to record at home. It probably has the most balanced tone out of any bass I have ever owned. It sounds incredible through my EA iAmp! I will need to do a revision again soon. Though the Lakland is amazing, it kills my back if performing with it for a long period, but I really don’t want to part with it. My plan is to now sell the MTD and retire the Lakland to studio use only and then replace that with a new and lighter Shuker Uberhorn 5 string (maybe 6 string). I have had to make the decision to get shot of the MTD in favour of relieving back pain and keep my collection down to a strict number of just three. I will never gig with the MTD, even though it is lighter than the Lakland, so it is packing its bags. As long as I have one great bass for live work, one great bass for studio work and one great 4 string to break up the monotony of playing 5 strings...that really works for me and I have no need for more instruments. I think it ultimately comes down to only owning what is absolutely necessary, what will serve you best and what speaks to you as an musician finding or expressing their own voice. After 18yrs of constant playing I am much more in tune in what I want and what I expect from my instruments. Impulse buying is something I experience less of these days. Well, basses at least…amps are my GAS right now…bought a new EBS Neoline 210 this week!
Thats pretty much my thoughts regarding more instruments. I'm not gigging enough and the Ray just chills in my flat. Think I've decided what to do. Thanks for this guys. -
Know the feeling, I`ve sold a fair few basses (and guitars) that were great instruments, but weren`t getting played. Seldom needed the money, I just thought it a waste to have such good instruments basically being ornaments. Down to 3 basses and 1 guitar now.
This is actually my thoughts. How much so stingrays go for nowadays? How do you search past auctions on ebay? -
Make sure you have a replacement then trade it or sell it to fund your replacement. You might like the Ray in a few years - then again you might not. Better off getting something you want to play now and enjoying it. Something very sad about instruments sat in cases not being loved. FWIW your story is like mine with the Ray. Got my dream Ray (black and maple) last year and sold it within 6 months. Sounds fantastic on its own but didn't sit in the mix as well as my other basses. Ultimately its about how it sounds in a band situation. I swapped mine for a fretless jazz which i don't play
It would be nice to have a bass head again - So might put a feeler out.. Then again It would be nice to free up some cash to put towards the custom too. GAH! If anyone has anything interesting feel free to PM me haha cheers again guys. -

Cheers guys.
Keep it, you'll never know when you might need it! Unless you really need the cash or you really need to upgrade your gear, there's no point in selling it. Just keep it in good nick and then maybe in a few years time it'll be more useful to you! Truckstop
This was what I was considering doing, but the custom bass has got a ray pup in the ray location so just worried I'd end up using that all time and still just having it getting dusty. -
They sit in the rack, unloved, along with all the guitars my gf has acquired and never plays.
Weirdly my gf has said to not sell it, says its too stunning. been suggested that i get a fretless neck and give it a new lease of life that way. Unsure... -
Hi guys, I've currently got 2 basses (with a third being built). Lakland Skyline DJ4 with extender EBMM Stingray 4 3EQ with extender Now i've had the 'ray for a few years now - like about 5 or 6? and was my go to bass at all times. But then I got the Lakland and preferred the neck and the feel of it. The ray i love the sound of also, but I just don't feel it as much. I try and play the 'ray every now and again to see if can enjoy playing it but I really can't. So what would you guys do? This is a bass I wanted when i first started out - It's an amazing instrument. I just don't get on well with the current neck. I've got a JazzRay being built so it takes care of the sound tbh. I was tempted to get the neck filed by Rich (Ou7shined) since his 'ray is a dream to play. But I'm sorta thinking that the custom will do it already well enough. Not sure whether to sell, trade or just keep the bass? Thoughts?

Huh we get fleeced up here! £15 p/h for band 7.50 for solo. Thats for Trace heads, Hartke and Peavey. All Solid state. They do however have an ampeg 810 which i used to use with my valve heads. The other studio generally has old Peavey stuff, old ashdown etc. I need a new head and cab...

Up here studios are kinda like that. But just remember (imo), if they had top range equipment - you'd probs be charged more for that and the upkeep. As a side note - how much is it down there?
