Looks like a cool rig. If you buy it all new from somewhere, especially the same shop, then you should ask them to knock some money off. Get them to do the head + cabs for a flat £900 - that'd save you the cost of the cables which you could then get from OBBM.
Could possibly do so. I've just been toying with the idea of getting an GK 410RBX cab instead of the two Harkte cabs but I'm not sure yet. If I did, the GK comes with the cable for the bi-amp feature, so I wouldn't need any extra cables. I'm living at home while at Uni so storage isn't an issue at all! P.S. The kind of band I'll be in will need a fair bit of oomph bass amp wise. (Listen to a band called A Wilhelm Scream if you haven't already). I know me and a guitarist mate are pretty much decided on starting a band, and of a similar genre to our old band, and we didn't exactly play quietly!

In which case it'd be more like: Gallien Kruger 1001RB-II £513.65 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Cables £31.50 £967.05 And of course, all this is brand new. Could be quite possible to get some second hand.
-
After a bit of reading etc, and price research, I've come up with this list: Gallien Kruger 700RB-II £399.00 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Stagg 4U Rack £59.00 Behringer MDX2600 Composer XL £85.00 Cables £52.00 (2xSpeakon + 2xpatch cables, from OBBM) Total: £1,016.90
-
Worth the extra £100 or so for the 1001RB or would the 700RB be sufficient? Thomann currently have the Hartke 4.5XL for under £300 and the 1001RB-II is £513. Also as a quick plus, any recommendations for a rackmount compressor?
The DI outs on the GK heads are pretty good too, btw.
Good, as I imagine it'll get used a lot! Would using the GK through Hartke cabs be detrimental or could it work quite well (I'm well aware you can't use the HMS, and that the amp runs in 'full range' mode)?
-
How would a GK head with Hartke cabs sound? Perhaps the 700RB-II through a 4.5XL? I could get both new for around £600.
Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II and 2 GK Neo 112's. Sorted. Why do you need seperate power amps and preamps? Just more stuff to lug around.
Typically theres just this very rig (with only one cab) in the FS section, and I can't buy it yet! Argh. Looks like a good suggestion, after a quick search it seems the GK's are good bump for the money. Would probably have to go second hand for at least the cabs, as buying it all new comes over budget! Damn timing!
-
Like the look of the 4.5XL! So far idea is DHA VT2 > Behringer Power amp > Hartke 4.5XL + 4U case and cables etc. Seems to come in under budget!
-
Ive only just realised that I keep mentioning the tuner...I have one on my Zoom pedal! Any recommendations on 210 cabs? Preferably ones where I could get 2 for around £300/£400, or may even go for a 410, again, same price (or cheaper)!
-
Thanks again for the smaller cab recommendations. I guess it'd be slightly easier on the pocket too! With regards to weight/size, I'm honestly not to fussed, as at only 19 years old, I still have plenty of lifting in me. The idea of having two 2x10" seems a good idea, as I can use one or both then, depending on how I need it!
-
Thanks for the suggestions! As I say, I'm happy to buy second hand, but it'll be around the end of September/October when I'll be looking at buying, so I can't really look too much into s/h just yet. If I were to get a 410 + 115 rig, would it be worth getting a crossover for use with a stereo power amp? Split the lows to the 115 and the rest through the 410?
-
I guess I should also mention that Im starting from scratch, so I'll need a 4u/6u rack, all the cables etc included!

Hey guys. I'm off to Uni in Sept, doing a course in Sound Engineering, and hoping to meet a few new musicians and get a band together. One problem....I don't have an amp! So I need to get one sorted....and I'm looking to spend, at the very most £900 - £1k. Ideal set up would be a rack with tuner, pre-amp & power amp, plus two cabs, I imagine 1x15 + 2x10 or 4x10. I've got my eye on a DHA VT2 Rackmount pre-amp...I play a lot of punk etc and valve gritiness is really what I'd be after. Although I'd need quite a clean tone sometimes for other applications (covering a wide range of genres on the course), so perhaps I'd have to ask Dave to see if he'd be able to exhange one of the valves for a lower gain one? Also with regard to cabs, I'm happy to go second hand (providing I can get a good deal etc) So, the basic question...can it be done? I'm open to all suggestions! Cheers guys, Karl.

I'm very happy with my Squier Deluxe Jazz V. Very happy. It makes the sound I want and I love playing it. I see no need to even consider another bass, let alone a "brand" bass. -
As BNT said, I always imagined that a click track would be run through the monitors, and the actual backing track out through the PA. I have no experience in the matter, but I have thought about this a few times and it seems a good solution.

Ahhh it's brilliant this bass! I made a patch on my Zoom B2.1u, and the bass just feels alive. This is the happiest I've ever felt in my bass playing! I mean, I don't even have an amp, I'm playing through headphones, playing along to music (audio interface) and it's great. The B string feels really nice, I imagine how it could feel a little tighter, perhaps after I get the naff stock strings off (or if it was a 35" scale), but even at the moment I'm very pleased! The 19mm string spacing is a god send. I apologise for the naff picture.

An unplanned trip to Manchester worked out very well for me! After visiting Dawsons I noticed the Squier Deluxe Jazz V hanging on the wall. So I had a play. I loved the feel of it straight away! Full 19mm string spacing. Very nice..I'd looked at these previously, and it would have been about £220 including delivery, an Dawsons sold them for £239.99. Then I noticed the "Sale" tag hanging. £199.99 and a very happy Karl!
+1 A Wilhelm Scream FTW. Behold: http://vimeo.com/629705 not seen many other punk/hxc bassists come anywhere near this guy in skillz. and he plays with his fingers too which is raaare for punk rock!
+1! The best punk band I've seen live, and his (Brian Robinson) basslines on the whole of 'Career Suicide' are insane, especially the short solo in the middle of 'Jaws 3, People 0'

Cracking, I'm actually tempted to save for the Brice HXB-406 at $289.95 or possibly even the Brice Z6 (red) at $399.95.
-
Thanks for the pics Tom! Ok, does anyone know of any other 5 or 6 string basses, that have a 35" scale that can be had for around £200-250? Other than used that is.... Cheers, Karl.
-
How much did the customs end up stinging you for? (Looking at a Douglas 6 string for $129.95 so just wondering what I can realistically expect to pay) Cheers, Karl.

Found two recordings from a 6.2 track demo we did. http://www.purevolume.com/jeanisdead The whole band was recorded "live" with just two condenser mics hung in a room we played in, then vocals done over the top. The whole thing took an hour.

I started to learn Courage and Attitude by Alien Ant Farm (Tye Zamora is an amazing player), but I'll have to wait till I get my 5 or 6 string to learn properly as theres a few low notes thrown in and its more hassle than it's worth to try and learn them in drop D. You should all learn these lines!
-
Well I'll be keeping my 4. It's not just extended range for the sake of it, I just know I'm going to be studying a range of genres, so me having a flexibility in one bass is a must have, hence me wanting at least 5 strings. I'm sorely tempted by the green 6 up there, or wait another month or two and save for the Grind on sale (providing it's still on sale, or for a bit of extra scope as to what i can afford to buy)
-
Looking at spending £200 at the most. I agree with needing at least 5 strings though. I've had 5s in the past, but as time's gone on I've left myself with a single 4 string bass. I was just looking at 6s just to maybe expand my creativity a bit. I'm looking at two basses right now, this 6 string: or this 5: Both coming from the US, 6 string is cheaper at $110, 5 string at $160, so both will come in at less than £200 after all the VAT, import duty etc. I could possibly stretch to this 6: Coming in at $289, so probably about £250-260 after all the costs. This one is 35" scale too. The first two are only 34". I'd definitely like to give 35" a try.
